I think we all agree that we are lacking at safety in coverage. This goes for both safety positions.
Gibril has been much maligned after signing a big contract in the offseason. One issue here is, bless his heart, why did Ireland sign a clear strong safety to play free safety? This is not using hindsight. Many of us were wondering about free safety after Renaldo Hill left and many here viewed Gibril as a SS. Then, Gibril got off to an absolutely brutal start. Not only was he bad in coverage, he couldn't tackle. What's worse, he was out muscled by guys like Shockey and Dallas Clark in a very embarrassing way.
Yeremiah has been a fan favorite, myself included, because he is physical and tough and has been here longer. Yeremiah is a more sure tackler. But Y Bell has also been a disappointment. Yeremiah has really struggled in coverage and, much like Channing Crowder, will not make the key interception or big play. But Yeremiah would never get out-muscled like when Shockey played pinball with Gibril for about 20 yards down the field. That was absolutely embarrassing to any Dolphins fan to see one of our guys abused like that.
All that being said, Gibril is younger. Gibril can make the occasional pick or sack, so he has more big play potential. But Y Bell would never have tire tracks all over his body like Gibril did.
Going forward, I would like to see what we have in Clemons. Can he be the free safety of the future? If so, what do we do at strong safety?
Gibril or Yeremiah at SS? The other could even possibly be released because of contract issues. That would leave Culver in reserve. Personally I would move Jason Allen back to safety. He has good strength, tackling ability and speed for safety. He may not have the brains but he sure doesn't have the agility to play corner. I gotta believe he could be a decent backup safety. We are not asking him to do nuclear physics.
