I think we all agree that we are lacking at safety in coverage. This goes for both safety positions.

Gibril has been much maligned after signing a big contract in the offseason. One issue here is, bless his heart, why did Ireland sign a clear strong safety to play free safety? This is not using hindsight. Many of us were wondering about free safety after Renaldo Hill left and many here viewed Gibril as a SS. Then, Gibril got off to an absolutely brutal start. Not only was he bad in coverage, he couldn't tackle. What's worse, he was out muscled by guys like Shockey and Dallas Clark in a very embarrassing way.

Yeremiah has been a fan favorite, myself included, because he is physical and tough and has been here longer. Yeremiah is a more sure tackler. But Y Bell has also been a disappointment. Yeremiah has really struggled in coverage and, much like Channing Crowder, will not make the key interception or big play. But Yeremiah would never get out-muscled like when Shockey played pinball with Gibril for about 20 yards down the field. That was absolutely embarrassing to any Dolphins fan to see one of our guys abused like that.

All that being said, Gibril is younger. Gibril can make the occasional pick or sack, so he has more big play potential. But Y Bell would never have tire tracks all over his body like Gibril did.

Going forward, I would like to see what we have in Clemons. Can he be the free safety of the future? If so, what do we do at strong safety?

Gibril or Yeremiah at SS? The other could even possibly be released because of contract issues. That would leave Culver in reserve. Personally I would move Jason Allen back to safety. He has good strength, tackling ability and speed for safety. He may not have the brains but he sure doesn't have the agility to play corner. I gotta believe he could be a decent backup safety. We are not asking him to do nuclear physics.

Wilson and Bell have been a lot more solid in the last few weeks (although they've been taken out in certain situations) so I doubt anything will change this season. It doesn't look like they are the answer long term though. They badly overpaid for Bell - he's a strong tackler but can't cover tight ends and has just one career pick which is hopeless.

I'm not there is a true NFL starting free safety on the roster. Wilson is a strong safety. Clemons may be more of a strong safety also - he's a size/speed guy who only had a few picks in college. Jason Allen probably isn't smart enough to lead that unit. Will Allen might have been a possibility but his career may be over. Culver is the back up free safety but is he quite good enough ?

Where Brock Marion when you need him?

Oh yeah...he's in jail...Bummer...

Yeremiah looks like he has linebacker speed. The rest of the season will be interesting. Its possible that Gibril moves to SS next season and Bell moves to backup. Bell just isn't able to cover the TE as the SS is apt to do. Bell struggled again yesterday against Winslow.

Something HAS GOT to change with the way we cover the TE and sadly Bell is a big problem in that aspect.

Honestly the 'coverage' issues should not be a surprise to anyone... These guys have always been aggressive on the fill and as such are the two leading tacklers on the team... (where are the LB's?)

IMO the problem is that their skills overlap... They are clones of eachother... aggressive, hard hitting and good on the blitz...

Letting Hill go to Denver was a mistake... He at least gave a different dimension and was around the ball alot more...

But I like how Clemons is getting more action and his speed should really help in coverage... but until we find a ball hawking presence we will always be solid against the run and victimized in the air.

It's funny last year we were talking Pro Bowl for Y Bell and now this year he's losing it? I think it has more to do with the defensive play calling. Yes covering a tight end should be easy but look at the TE's we've faced his year.

Dustin Kellerx2 - Possible Pro Bowler this Year
Jeremy Shockey - Pro Bowler
Antonio Gates - Pro Bowler
Dallas Clark - Pro Bowler
Kellen Winslow - Pro Bowler

With all of those guys you can only expect so much

Who catches Jamaal Charles at the end of that screen? Yeah, think again.

yeremiah is our leading tackler.. he is possibly one of our best defenders! gibril has played lights out the past 3 games.. this secondary is starting to gel..

I honestly think our defensive scheme is more responsible for the TE success against us than either of these guys. They have both had their problems, but our zone just gets tore up by everybody. The DC should be trying to find something different to do with our personnel if this isn't working, but it seems like PP wants to keep trying to pound the square peg into the round hole.
