Give Chop A Grade...

I’m sick of this stupid statistic “pressure rate”. The way it’s used, every guy in the league looks great. It’s useless because it doesn’t consider context of the pressure. At all.
Fair enough but over a sufficient sample size it should crystalize no?

Yes - I get the stat but it doesn’t take context into account. I feel like it’s overused for every DL and Edge in the league and everyone looks great!

I'm not a fan of drafting for need but we had our best 2 edges coming back from serious injury. It's an expensive position to fill. We have Chop for 5 years if we want him that long.

That said Chop isn't the second coming of LT but he is taking up the opposing OCs' bandwidth to plan for. He has been creating compromises and misfires in opponents' game plan. The numbers have been there as far as pressures but now sacks are showing up. Run defense will come, I hope, but he hasn't been the liability many forecasted (at least not in my eyes worse than the average edge). We could do so much worse with a rookie at a critical position of need. I grade his season B+ with a chance to improve that grade from here out.
Yeah he looks good and like he’s going to be a keeper.

Oddly, I think I read in another thread that Tua was somehow in the 60's for this game LOL.

It's like I said in that thread...

When the PFF numbers support any given argument I'm making (here, Chop Robinson showing elite traits en route to his superstardom) -- I like to cite them.

When the PFF numbers don't support my arguments or they make someone like Tua look bad -- PFF is worthless and the numbers are irrelevant. :chuckle:
I think he was in the 60s collectively for the season...and taking games 1 and 2 into account, that was a big hole to dig out of. He's playing top-shelf right now.

I'm looking at this as Chop vs Mitchell, long term. Which one has the most impact and gets that nice 2nd contract. I know who the smart money is still on but I'll be rooting hard for the other.

Here’s the thing with Chop (imo), and I say this as one of his biggest proponents on this board:

He’s still got a lot of growth needed before he can reasonably be considered a “star.”

1) He still needs to develop better moves. Top-tier tackles with great feet are going to be able to backpedal and set before he gets to their outside shoulder. Chop has (very) quickly figured out that once he gets a blocker moving in the wrong direction to account for his super-fast get off, he can either go around the outside shoulder or through them by just keeping their momentum headed toward the QB. Top tackles won’t let that happen.

He’s at the very least going to have to develop a better swim move at that point to attack the inside shoulder when top tier tackles get to his attack point on the outside shoulder and balance themselves before he hits them.

2) He needs to get stronger to help develop additional moves. This is stated with the acknowledgment that he’s already very strong for his size. Some of this is going to happen naturally, because…as has been pointed out repeatedly, Chop is still very young. He’s not going to hit his physical prime for about another 4 years.

If Chop gets stronger and develops a solid swim move and something like a Reggie/Micah Parsons hump move, he’ll be a superstar. He’s not there yet, and is getting by on raw talent right now.

But as I’ve also been repeatedly saying, he also seems like a really good kid and a very earnest student. The guy has all the gifts, and it should be a joy to watch him develop over the next 2-3 years.
