Give Chop A Grade...

Here’s the thing with Chop (imo), and I say this as one of his biggest proponents on this board:

He’s still got a lot of growth needed before he can reasonably be considered a “star.”

1) He still needs to develop better moves. Top-tier tackles with great feet are going to be able to backpedal and set before he gets to their outside shoulder. Chop has (very) quickly figured out that once he gets a blocker moving in the wrong direction to account for his super-fast get off, he can either go around the outside shoulder or through them by just keeping their momentum headed toward the QB. Top tackles won’t let that happen.

He’s at the very least going to have to develop a better swim move at that point to attack the inside shoulder when top tier tackles get to his attack point on the outside shoulder and balance themselves before he hits them.

2) He needs to get stronger to help develop additional moves. This is stated with the acknowledgment that he’s already very strong for his size. Some of this is going to happen naturally, because…as has been pointed out repeatedly, Chop is still very young. He’s not going to hit his physical prime for about another 4 years.

If Chop gets stronger and develops a solid swim move and something like a Reggie/Micah Parsons hump move, he’ll be a superstar. He’s not there yet, and is getting by on raw talent right now.

But as I’ve also been repeatedly saying, he also seems like a really good kid and a very earnest student. The guy has all the gifts, and it should be a joy to watch him develop over the next 2-3 years.
Astute

I keep going back to the same description when I isolated him in college

This is a very unique football player.

A unique blend of force + speed + leverage

Good tackles can counter that momentum/force into losing his leverage and down goes Frazier, but that’s where he’ll learn some things

Someone who you just allow to play his game

I'll say this again...

Chop is the type of player that I'll always draft over a guy like Barton... always.

He's younger than 95% of the prospects, he plays a primary position, and his ceiling is extremely high-- pro Bowl high.

Yes, sometimes these guys bust, many times they bust... but when they hit, you get a Madden cover type star.

Guys like Barton can be good, but they rarely move the needle. We found Connor Williams and then Brewer for very reasonable prices, but finding a young cheap Edge??? You KNOW that ain't gonna happen.

So you take your shots when you can.

While I agree with this in principle, this year having an extra Gaurd that can also play Center, might have moved the needle for us a bit more in the short term. Long term projection tho, your right.

Wow where was Chop this past game?!

They schemed him into oblivion.

So far Chop has taken on the identity of the team that drafted him. Feast against inferior opponents, drown against superior competition ... and that is more than acceptable for a rook. He'll probably finish with around 6.5 sacks which is decent and good enough to build on.

If he's still disappearing in big games a few years from now, then there's a problem.

Solid B so far. Unfortunately, I'll always compare him to Mitchell ... so that sucks for him. And us.
