When Bill Parcells arrived to rebuild the 1-15 Dolphins, he had a long-range plan.
Nothing was going to change it - not even the overnight success of an AFC East title.
So while a swirl of high-profile activity has consumed the rest of the division during the off-season, Parcells has remained low-key, sticking to a blueprint that worked at four previous NFL stops.
"Maybe his three- or four-year plan got a jump start, but he's still going to stick with his three- or four-year plan," former NFL linebacker Steve DeOssie said of Parcells, who coached him with the New York Giants and New England. "You don't build a team off flukes; you build it off a foundation. That's always been Bill's philosophy."
Parcells' tenets are simple: Build from the inside out; develop young talent; find players who fit the system; control spending.
But a low-key off-season isn't necessarily a bad thing, said Hall of Fame offensive tackle Dan Dierdorf.
"I wouldn't take that as, 'Gee whiz, the Dolphins have dropped the ball,' " said Dierdorf, an NFL analyst for CBS. "Maybe Bill thinks they're on target.
"Parcells has always been a guy that says, 'Let my young guys grow. Let them become good players.' "
