Greetings,

I've been following the game for many years, but have never had any exposure to the inner workings of the game, outside of what I see on Sundays.

Frankly, you guys do a fantastic job of filling in the blanks in my knowledge, but I'd like to learn more of the chess match that goes on out there.

What I'm looking for is a book/guide that details the tactics, game-plans, schemes, philosophies and concepts, that teams/coaches teach their players to make them successful on the field.

Perhaps some of you guys played the game in high school or college and could share some insight? But, if someone could point me towards a decent book, that would be a great start.

Thanks in advance.

Well I ordered "Take your eyes off the ball" by Pat Kirwan.

Also spotted "Blood, sweat and chalk", and there were some official coaching manuals from the AFCA, but they sounded a bit dry.

Has anyone read any of these?

"The Essential Smart Football" and "The Art Of Smart Football" by Chris Brown are also great reads and provide more in depth, albeit individual and specific examples, of looks into schemes & strategies.

"Football Scouting Methods" by Steve Belichick (Bill's Father)

"The New Thinking Man's Guide to Pro Football" by Paul Zimmerman (Dr Z.) though being an older book, is heavy with info and is more like an encyclopedia. A must read, IMO.

And the other book I'd recommend you have in your possession, as Kirwan's book is a good intro and starter read.

"Blood Sweat and Chalk" has some good biographical stories on the evolution of the game but lacks in the X&O department.

Best of luck. Hope you found this useful and enjoy these books. :read:

Thanks SoS!

I'll make a start and contribute my thoughts afterwards.
