Just read an interview with Pepper Johnson in Deadspin. It can be found here: https://deadspin.com/q-a-pepper-johnson-on-drinking-with-bill-belichick-sp-1828726414

Anyway, a couple things that caught my eye were:

"Kacy, our problem was, Kacy was a defensive line coach in the AFC East, where I was a defensive line coach in the AFC East. I don’t want to say it’s animosity, but there’s several times where he tried to tell me how to coach my guys. You’ve got to do one or two things: You demand this, and this is the only way that it’s happening; I’ve got to run this this way. But if you’re making a suggestion or you’re telling me this is what you did in freaking Miami? I could care less about that because I didn’t think highly of the Miami Dolphins’ defensive line [when Kacey was coaching them]. I thought they got a lot of pass rush from the defensive ends but they didn’t get a lot of pass rush from the inside guys, so that’s why those guys were having a hard time against certain teams and [against] some other teams they just padded their stats."

"What Belichick does, Belichick, what bothers him the most is what he does to other people. So, yeah. Quick passes, and Brady getting the ball out fast and all that stuff. The Patriots had a linebacker problem, which was said at this time last year. And then you don’t have [Dont’a] Hightower so it’s going to be a bigger problem. So if you put two running backs out there at the same time, how much of a nightmare is that going to be for Belichick? Bill never likes two running backs. He never liked playing against two skillful running backs. It’s a problem because he can’t really cover them with his different combination of coverages with the secondary. The linebackers have to get them. And you need good linebackers."

Maybe the Fins will roll with Drake/Gore or Drake/Ballage combos out there this year? The O should be less predictable without Ajayi. 6 more days...can't wait!

Interesting stuff. The NFL is all about matchups and can you as an offense exploit the defense. I can’t see Gase going to any two back sets because that’s not in his offense. I can see Drake out wide at times and also running wheel and arrow routes which should give defenses fits. Then the Gisecki possibility of being split mixed with the Wilson/Grant combo and we still have Stills and possibly Parker if his tampon is installed properly.

There’s a lot of toys for Gase to play with and he’s going to need to have this offense firing on all cylinders right away.

The way I interpret what Pepper Johnson is saying, the most effective way to piss off Belichick would be Drake and Grant on Lbs.

I remember Gase using 3 RB sets in Chicago.

By the way, this was an excellent find. I really enjoyed reading that - Pepper gave a lot of information / insight. Thanks for posting.

Proves a democracy appoach works better than communism imo. No ways perfect but was surprised that Bill B ran his ship that way.
