I have been watching this Cam guy ever since he was named head coach and the trading for Trent Green was one I really didnt understand at first but after doing some research I have came to see why Cam pushed for this guy.
One of the major reason's is Trent Green is one of the smartest QB's in the game and it didnt hurt that he already knows the plays that Miami will be running this season. "he's very smart" (John Beck) said Cam, and why do you think Tom Brady and Payton Manning are such great QB's not because they have a great team around them heck, they could get sign with the Oakland and make them a playoff team, but because they are 2 of the smartest QB's in the in the league, Manning calls his own plays not many QB's have that much control over the game or even have the smarts to run the O. John beck is quick learner and knows alot about the game of football said Cam after being asked why he tool Beck instead of Quinn. Trent Green wasnt mainly brought in to win games but to mentor John and be a great example of how a QB is suppose to work behind center.

Interesting post. I agree with your opinion, I think. At least where I could understand it.

I think pairing John Beck with Trent Green is an excellent strategic move. Besides his athleticism and accuracy, you end up with one very smart person/quarterback learning from another very smart person/quarterback. Leading a high-scoring offense is no cake-walk, but it sure helps when you can read defenses instantly and determine which man should be open, where on the field he should become open, and when those windows of opportunity will open and shut. Being able to audible at the LOS and know how to position your key players relative to weakness in the defensive set is a strength many QB's take a long time to develop, if ever. Knowing Beck has the offensive smarts of a Dan Marino and a Bob Griese makes me real damn excited about watching him play with the new threats and tools we are getting for him.

I've mentioned it before. This was great move on the Dolphins part. Green is much "smarter" as QB than Dante is. He will be a much better person for Beck to learn from.
Question: Anyone seen a Beck Jersey yet?

Great move by Cameron. QB's stand a much better chance of succeeding if the team doesn't rush them into play. Green can mentor Beck and by the time Beck is ready Green will be ready to hang them up...No Quarterback controversy, just a passing of the torch at the right time. And if Beck is ready earlier then we have them battle it out. Many QB's have gone this route and succeeded; Carson Palmer, Phillip Rivers, Tom Brady, Chad Pennington...ect.

Green's already answered this. He's not here to be a mentor. He's here to be the QB of the team. It is Beck's responsibility to suck Greens brain and learn from his actions on and off the field. Beck may or may not learn much from Green, but if he does it'll be because BECK wanted the information and BECK asked the questions and BECK took the time to watch and learn from Green, not the other way around.

The term 'mentor' is really overused, particularly for QBs in this league. Years ago, guys like Griese weren't mentored by Morrell or Marino by Strock. Yeah, they learned some of the ropes from them, but their ability to use that knowledge is what made them successful.

I remember reading in one of the TC reports earlier how, after a certain play they ran, Green came over to the sideline and Green and Beck were discussing what went down. It sounds like Beck is willing to ask and Green is willing to tell!

Maybe Green was asking Beck "what just went down?"

I don't think anyone ever questioned Green's leadership just the fact that we trade for a 37 year-old QB.

I think Cam was the one who said that he doesn't want Green to take beck under his wing or anything. Rather, he justs wants him to do what he's been doing his entire career so that beck has front row seats to see how an NFL vetran is suposed to Prepare and carry himself...

I remember reading an article where Green mentioned he's not going to be doing any "hand-holding" for Beck. Within a week, they are walking and talking together.
Recall, Beck is like a football sponge. He's also very smart. He's going to find the right times to discuss things, and isn't going to come across as needy. The fact that Trent is willing to give information without hesitation shows that a good camaraderie is being formed between the two.
Beck knows his position. He's learning. He's said in interviews that "He's the guy", meaning Green.
I like what I'm seeing, and I'm glad to have Beck right where he is. It's as ideal a situation for a future starter as I've ever seen.

I'd be curious to see this article. I've heard several people say something similar. AFAIK, the only time Trent's ever said anything about mentoring rookies was during the draft last year when he was a guest and the Chiefs drafted Brody Croyle. The announcers were asking Trent if he was looking forward to mentoring him or some such, and Trent said something to the effect of, "I'm not going to go out of my way to coach him. I'm sure we'll have conversations, and I'll answer any questions he has, but I'm not yet in the mentor role." That's a very loose paraphrase. At the time, some Chief fans weren't real happy about the comments, but take it into consideration that was when Trent was still piloting one of the top offenses in the league. He was, understandably, not really interested in talking about his retirement and moving from a starter into a mentor position at the time. Ever since then, there are periodic rumblings that Trent isn't a mentor, but I've never seen a quote from him about mentoring other than that specific one about Croyle. If there are others, I'd be interested in seeing them.

George Blanda played into his 40's. You judge a player by his ability, not by his chronological age. Everyone realizes that Green is likely to be here for about 2 seasons.
