Greg Bedard's Thoughts on the Jags game now up!

Wow!

Some people think Gus has pulled away from AJ. I don't think so. Gus had some really bad throws vs. the Jags and some bad reads. I saw a lot of players running free but the ball going elsewhere. And I still don't understand how you throw to Wes Welker in the end zone when David Boston is lined up on the outside one-on-one. Gus may be a vet, but we've have seen that his biggest weakness is mental breakdowns (the wall, anyone?).

That's pretty much counter to the popular assessment.

I like Bedard, he tells it straight.

Good to here:

Travis Daniels is the real deal. That play he made against Jimmy Smith was what he's been doing throughout training camp. Don't worry about the hamstring. Some copy editor cut out the note we had on Daniels (ugh), but Travis told me that his right hamstring merely tightened up so he thought he should get out of there. With all the hamstring problems in that secondary, that was a very good idea. Travis said he still moves the same.

I think he did a very good analysis. The reason people feel Feeley (whoa) didn't do a great job vs. the Jags was he didn't lead the offense down the field at all. I realize he didn't have a running game, but still, every now and again you have to take it upon yourself to move the team. Gus didn't do a good job of that either, but he did run the offense better. He's still not the answer at QB. Stop-gap this year until we find a servicable replacement.

The Dolphins' coverage teams have been really subpar so far even without the punt return TD. I thought Scotty O'Brien was supposed to be some special teams guru? He's officially director of football operations, but he's on the field every day coaching special teams with Keith Armstrong. Actually, Armstrong seems to be more in charge of the return and coverage units. The Dolphins were great in both those areas last season. Wonder why they're having so much trouble this year?

This is the only observation in which I disagree with Greg. The Phins weren't "great" in any area last year - they were a 4-12 team, and they stunk everywhere; Wes Welker made it seem like the ST was somewhat OK by making a few good plays on his own, but ST overall sucked *** - or has everyone forgotten those Keith Armstrong lamentations from last year and the offseason?

NO, the problem is that Armstrong remained on the staff; it's Saban's one real blunder so far in terms of his coaching staff. Armstrong sucked as a coach last year, and he sucks this year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him go before the season is out.

The one thing this team is chock-full of is overachieving, high-motor types...the very kind of players that make ST great. Armstrong once again is not making use of the talent available to him, and that's what's wrong, not some new guy with a Director of Football Operations title who was supposed to be some ST guru.

It's the coach.

Bedard just confirms what I've seen in the first two games.
If Gus knows the offense better than AJ he hasn't taken advantage of it.
If gus starts the season I'm sure he'll be out of there by the fourth or fifth game.

Showing they have learned something, none of the QBs even looked in Donald Lee's direction. Lorenzo Diamond is going to beat him out. And Diamond is also going to take a lot of playing time away from FB Heath Evans. Diamond is more of a true H-back

Good to hear about Lorenzo Diamond - I hope he makes the final cut.
