IMO, its his only viable option....he wants the opportunity to start and he is familiar with the offense. Many of the "rumors" have Miami landing Culpepper or Brees and if that happens, they are both coming off injury. Either way, most teams need at least two solid QB's since 1 usually doesn't make it through a whole season un-injured.

If Gus doesn't renegotiate then he's back in the same boat he was last two years ago...a backup. If he resigns, he'll at least have an option to run with the 1st teamers until a new QB is healthy...and no one can say for certain when that will be.

He's going to be a back-up anyway.

Marvez said yesterday that, according to a source, Miami is only offering Gus back-up money.

If that's true, I believe that guarantees we are going after a FA starter and not drafting a QB on the first day of the draft.

They're offering what they believe is accurate for the position he will be playing, which would very unlikely be backing-up a rookie.

I didn't mean that we would not go after & get a new QB....I just believe that Gus' best option would be to re-work his current deal and remain in Miami. It would give him his best opportunity to play, IMO.

Hell if Gus wants to test the market go ahead I'm sure he will come running back once he realizes he will get no better from anyone else. Everyone else in the league knows he should be a backup so unless a few of the people on this board that thinks he shoud be our starter next year get gm or coaching jobs he will be stuck as our possible backup or starter if we cannot find anyone else. Last year he was a free agent and the gates were not flowing with starting offers, this year would seem more favorble since he did start last year but his age and lack of accuracy are not big selling points.

I wouldn't know where his best option to play would be, I only know that he's not guaranteed to play here either. Brees can start throwing at the end of April.

I'm just hoping that he reworks the contract or ends up coming back to Miami in some way....he would be an excellent backup to whoever we bring in. Chances are high that whoever our 2006 backup is...he'll play at some point.

i just really hope we get Brees.

everyone around is talking like we already signed him... i hate being that overly optimistic though - everytime we do that, it doesn't pan out.

Yeah, there's a small & quiet optimism in SD that Brees may not be gone yet. There just hasn't been that air of finality. Now Marty has said publicly at the combine that he would like to have Brees back and that he would probably be the starter, pending his recovery. He is saying that the organization is not all on the same page here. Where does the ownership fit into this? They have been quiet, other than to say that going deep into the play-offs is the expectation for 2006. They may force their muscle one way or the other, but no one knows where they really stand.

I still believe that Brees will hit FA unsigned, but it's POSSIBLE that SD is letting the market set his value then banking on that Brees would rather play in SD than anywhere else. That would be uncharacteristic for AJ Smith, but then again, he's never been predictable.

Thanks for the input from the SD side. But, I just can't see SD matching anything that Brees will get in FA though. Somebody, if not the Fins, will offer a pretty decent contract IMO. SD may have the money to match it, but would they with so much tied up in Rivers?

Sounds like good news to me! His fast ball passes on EVERY play has placed him on Saban's hit list.
