H-Back

whats a H-Back? Who ours?

An H-back is like part fullback and part TE. He can line up in either spot and is an able blocker and reciever. That's it in a nutshell. We don't have anyone on our team that is considered an H-back.

Well, we don't have one officially. But both Lorezon Diamond and Alex Holmes has been used in the H-Back role several times. Now that Linehan is our Offensive Coordinator, it won't be long until an H-Back becomes an official position on our depth chart.

Sometimes if a team has a very athletic fullback type, they will put him in motion. This means as the quarterback is calling out signals, before the ball is snapped, the fullback will suddenly stand up and start running. When a player goes in motion he may run to the left or the right, but he may not run towards the defense until the ball is snapped. By putting the fullback in motion, you challenge the defense to decide who’s going to guard him. At the snap of the ball, the fullback will turn towards the defense and either hit a key defender or run a bit to catch a quick pass. If the fullback is put in motion frequently, then he's sometimes called an H-Back. When he's used as an H-Back, the fullback may start out lined up just outside the left tackle as if he were an extra tight end, but then go into motion and play from behind the linemen as if he were a fullback.

This is from a terrific site, CS Football 101:

I recommend it for everyone, either as a learning tool about the specifics of the game we love, or as a reference for the minutiae that some of us are unable to remember anymore...:fogey:

oooooh so THAT'S what a touchdown is. y'know, i always heard it being tossed around on TV and on this board, but was never QUITE sure what it meant

Lorenzo Diamond appears to have been written off at H-Back. He got a shot earlier to line up and lead block, but it doesnt seem like the team is using him anymore.

It appears as if Alex Holmes is being groomed to be the H-Back of the future. He has slowly but surely taking playing time away from Lorenzo Diamond and Darian Barnes as the season has progressed.

He hasnt really been all that great though, it seems. I think it's possible that in the offseason Miami looks at picking up other potential H-Backs, like signing Brandon Manumaluna or drafting Matt Bernstein.

sammie morris is our h back

Nein! Sammy Morris is a passing down specialist who mostly blocks or recievers.

To answer your question in the other thread, the best H-back in the league right now is probabaly Jim Kleinsasser, the guy that Scott Linehan had in Minnesota, or Chris Cooley in Washington.

Besides those two, not alot of teams use H-backs extensively.
