I have been a frequent reader of Finheaven for quite a sometime, I just
have become a new member. Reading all these posts about Daunte
if he should be benched or not or if the Dolphins made a mistake trading to get him
I think the answer is which Daunte did the Dolphins get. One thing to remember
selecting a quarterback in the NFL requires doing your homework, following up
with the right coaching, implementation of the right system and lets not forget
a good quantity of old fashioned good luck. Case in point: the media raves about Belicheck & staff and their superior talent evaluation but I seem to recall that Brady was drafted in the late rounds and Brady himself said that if they (they being Belicheck & Co.) knew how good he was going to be why did they wait to the late round to draft him. If Belicheck and company really knew how good Brady could be why did they wait to select him so late? Did anyone the Patriots draft ahead of Brady make more of an impact to the franchise than Brady? The answer is no. What the Patriots did was correct, they did their homework, they provided good coaching, a good system and finally they got something that made it work …luck.
Which brings me to the Duante selection. I think Saban picked Culpepper on the assumption that Culpepper would eventually regain his full mobility. Mobility is what partly made Culpepper a good quarterback. You see his mobility enabled Culpepper
to create some time for him to make plays and find open receivers. Culpepper’s security blanket in a lot of ways was mobility. Dan Marino had a security blanket also, but it was not his mobility it was his ability to see the field quickly and his famous quick release. When Saban traded for Culpepper I believe he based it on the assumption that Culpepper would gain most of his mobility back, that’s where Saban relied on the medical expertise and a little luck. I wonder if Saban entertained the possibility that if Culpepper didn’t regain all his mobility back that he could evolve into a “pocket†quarterback or a kind of non scrambler quarterback that still could have a significant impact. I like Saban a lot but he’s not God and right now regarding Culpepper he could use a little luck.
