Dolphins | Harrington signed to three-year deal

Wed, 17 May 2006 10:52:18 -0700

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Miami Dolphins signed QB Joey Harrington to a three-year contract after acquiring him from the Detroit Lions, according to league salary documents. The deal includes a signing bonus of $2.2 million and a 2006 base salary of $800,000, meaning that Harrington will earn $3 million for the coming season. Harrington is due to receive a $1 million roster bonus and a $1.75 million base salary in 2007. The team guaranteed $750,000 of the $1.75 million base salary, meaning Harrington will receive it even if he is no longer with the club. Harrington will receive $3.75 million in guaranteed money during the three-year deal.

The third year of the deal is designed to be so prohibitive that it will force the Dolphins to restructure the contract or release the veteran quarterback. It includes a $10 million roster bonus, a $5 million base salary and an exorbitant cap charge of $15.733 million.

I was just about to post this not a bad deal for a backup.

It's cheaper than the deal we would have had to make to keep Sage, as many were proposing.

Is it just me, or does that say a 3 year deal and it only shows 2 years of pay? What is he getting in 2008? That will kinda determine if we plan on keeping him for 2 or 3 years.....

That changes things quite a bit.

The original claim was a 2 year deal, which pretty much kept the word trade out of the question. (He is no use for 1 year and then to trade and find another backup)

If the deal is 3 years, then he is still of great use to us over a 2 year period. During that time, we could groom a replacement an at least have the option of trading him to a team in need of a QB. (That would keep us from paying the guaranteed money for year 3)

I dont want to trade a good backup, but its good to know that we have the option if needed.

Good job by the Phins Organization on this one.

You are correct. Here is an update from ESPN:

The third year of the deal is designed to be so prohibitive that it will force the Dolphins to restructure the contract or release the veteran quarterback. It includes a $10 million roster bonus, a $5 million base salary and an exorbitant cap charge of $15.733 million.

Umm....in comparison, we were paying Fiedler and Griese about 5 million each just a few years ago. Somebody check the math on that one and compare to what we're paying Pep and Joey combined this year.

Good ol' days, huh?

Ah yes, I had a feeling something like that was missing....

It's a 2 year deal which gives us the option to trade joey on the third year, but only if he agrees to the team. Basically it gave leverage to both sides so we could get compensation and joey could choose where he wishes to go....

I dont understand that at all. If anything, it gives the team WANTING Harrington trade leverage. Why would you trade for a guy who is going to be released before his 10 million roster bonus comes? The only way a team would trade for him is depending on when his roster bonus comes, teams might want him in Mini camp earlier. It really doesnt give us any leverage at all really. Its pretty much the same exact scenario we just went through with Harrington having a 4.whatever million bonus coming in June.

You are right on the compensation though. It might net us a late round draft pick if a team is in the same exact situation we are, but it definately doesnt give them leverage knowing he will be cut before his bonus comes. Also Joey can choose where he wants to play wether he is under contract, or a free agent. So it really doesnt help him.

The only thing the contract pretty much guarantees is he will be here for 2 years and it spreads out the signing bonus cap hit over 3 years.

not only that, but i believe we still got daunte culpepper AND joey harrington for less money then the saints got drew brees for.
