I thought Saban over reacted when he finally caved in and coughed up a 6th (conditional 5th) to get Joey in a month earlier. Detroit was going to have to cut him before recceiving his roster bonus in less than a month and we could of had him for free. I was disappointed when Saban caved, and even more upset when Cleo was out performing Joey early in camp.
I seems finally Joey is coming around and Nick was dead on right nowing how much camp time Harrington would need. Nick is not always perfect, but he does have scary insight into football and players.

It's a sixth round pick (conditional fifth), and at the time nobody was too sure of when Culpepper would be returning. Did you really want to have a Cleo Lemon-lead team going into Pitt on Sept. 7? Or a Joey Harrington-lead team, where Harrington wouldn't have a full understanding of the offense, or even worse, rushing Daunte to start (if he hypothetically) if he wasn't ready.

I liked the deal when it was first announced. Harrington isn't as bad as the Lions made him seem, almost any Qb would have struggled with that team.

plus anyteam could have signed him, we might have been outbid. The 6th made it a lock earlier and they could negotiate a tighter contract. Plus this years 6th probably won't make the team (fifita right), so its not like those are sure things.

We got a former first round pick, with NFL experience for a sixth round pick. CASE CLOSED.:D

I got the impression Saban ALLOWED Matt to save face with that deal intentionally.

He could have been more cold hearted if he wanted to, but he got what he wanted at EXACTLY the price he wanted so he played nice.

If he was too nasty it might affect his dealings with other GMs around the league.

:dolphins:

The other options were Tommy Maddox and Jamie Martin. THAT is the case closed.

He gave the pick up for Harrington because there was no guarantee Harrington would be ours when he got cut. He didn't give the pick up to get him in camp a few weeks early and he sure as heck didn't give it up so Matt Millen could save some face.

The Bengals wanted Harrington too, and they were ready to give up more compensation to the Lions than we were, but were not ready to give him the same money we were. IF Joey got cut, and the Bengals were no longer required to give up pick compensation for him, it only follows that their financial offer would increase. And, if their financial offer increased, Joey easily could have signed with them. They have a good team, good coaching, and their QB was facing the exact same prospects of coming back from the injury as ours was.

We paid a 6th because to lose out on Harrington to the Bengals and be forced to go with Tommy Maddox or Jamie Martin could have been disastrous, considering the rehab Daunte was on.

The real question is considering the progress of Cleo Lemon and the rehab of Daunte Culpepper, was it THAT worth it...that the chance of losing out on Harrington was worth a 6th round pick. As it turns out, had we gotten Martin or Maddox we would not be forced to endure their suckiness, because A) Daunte is healthy, and B) Cleo has #2 talent and skills.

Given the uncertaintly about Daunte's knee at that point and the need for Harrington to learn a whole new offense, it was clearly the right thing to do.

Harrington had already signed the deal with the dolphins prior to Millen letting him go.

What's more he TOLD the media that he had already signed the contract to force Millen's hand.

I'm sorry but that is incorrect.

First off, Harrington was never released. He was traded for a 6th round pick that could become a 5th round pick if he plays on over 40% of downs.

Second, Harrington can't SIGN anything while he's under contract. He was granted permission to seek a trade, and he did. He spoke with the Bengals and the Dolphins. The Bengals were offering better draft pick compensation than the Dolphins, but the Dolphins were offering a better contract to Joey. Joey decided on the contract, and then went about forcing Millen's hand simply by refusing to speak with the Bengals or Browns about contract issues.

HOWEVER, nothing was signed until the trade became official. Had the Lions released him, the Bengals and/or Browns could have suddenly upped their contract offer (because they no longer had to give up picks for him) and all the sudden Miami's offer may look like the smallest on the table. Under that scenario, Miami had no guarantees of getting Joey to sign with us.

we did great...I don't expect him to become our starter, but MY money says he will start somewhere else and we will get MORE from him than we paid...by a lot.
