As for Leinart, his stock has not dropped. That is an inaccurate assessment. I don't know who started all this chatter and where it came from. I've mentioned how high I am on Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn, but that doesn't mean I'm not high on Leinart. Quinn already said he's going back to Notre Dame, and he could be the No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft.
Leinart has an elite grade. Will Leinart have a higher grade than Eli Manning? Yes, he will. His grade could be on par with Carson Palmer, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2003 draft.
Leinart struggled for a half against UCLA, but that won't have any bearing on his grade. Ben Roethlisberger's grade wasn't impacted when he had one bad game against Iowa in 2003. You evaluate the total body of work and how a player goes about his business: Does he have the physical skills, leadership, smarts and football attributes (physically and mentally) to be an outstanding QB in the NFL? Leinart has that.
Some people knock his arm strength. Leinart doesn't have a howitzer for an arm, but there have been plenty of NFL quarterbacks who couldn't throw the ball through the side of a mountain, yet they were excellent QBs. Joe Montana and Dan Fouts didn't have huge arms, and even Peyton Manning didn't wow scouts during his individual workouts. Leinart's arm strength is certainly much better than average. He's a great leader, is tremendously respected by his coaches and teammates, and has been a big-game quarterback.
Leinart is tremendously accurate, which is one of the most important skills for an NFL quarterback. The most important statistic in evaluating a QB at the college or NFL level is yards per pass attempt. The key to that stat is hitting receivers in stride, being precise with the football and allowing receivers to do some damage after the catch. And it's not just on short routes, but also the intermediate and crossing patterns -- all the routes where a QB has to hit the receiver in stride and let him make a play after the catch. Leinart will be able to get the ball downfield, be precise and hit receivers in stride, and he is ready for NFL success.
Leinart won't be any lower than the No. 2 pick in the draft.
