The heavy lifting is done in the Dolphins' off-season. So has the signing of Ndamukong Suh and drafting of Devante Parker moved the needle on expectations? Well, you go down the most recent power rankings and it's like the Dolphins are trapped in a time-warp of their recent seasons:

* MMQB's Peter King has the Dolphins a status-quo 8-8 for the season and 16th in his power rankings that came out Monday. Comment: "Dolphins win second in the AFC East, which is an accomplishment. But I wonder if Stephen Ross will think 9-7 and being out of the playoffs is really such a swell year?"
* ESPN's John Clayton puts the Dolphins 15th in his post-draft power rankings. Comment: "A lot of new faces will be surrounding Ryan Tannehill in 2015, including Greg Jennings and first-round pick DeVante Parker. Will they be enough to get Miami to improve on its 8-8 finish in 2014?
* NFL.com puts the Dolphins at 17th in their post-draft rankings. Comment: "Fortify wide receiver even further? Check. Stock up on the defensive line? Check. Draft two talented players multiple spots beneath their talent level? Double check! DeVante Parker would have gone to the Texans at 16, guaranteed. (OK, if not, he wouldn't have lasted much longer.) Some draftniks found it mildly startling that teams like the Rams (picking 10th overall), Browns(12th) and Saints (13th) didn't take the Louisville wideout. How DT Jordan Phillips fell to 52 is anybody's guess. Maybe Nostradamus inked a quatrain about it somewhere."

* USA Today pus them 10[SUP]th[/SUP] in their power rankings. Comment: “Ryan Tannehill has quietly emerged as a fine QB and should better mesh with a stout D with his revamped wideout corps.”

* CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco picks the Dolphins an optimistic-sounding 16th in his rankings. Comment: "They've had a heck of an offseason, adding Ndamukong Suh and then having a good draft. Ryan Tannehill has to love getting receiver DeVante Parker."

National "expectations"? More like casual predictions. Not much is "expected" from the Dolphins quite yet.

Have Dolphins moved needle of national expectations?

Every year in recent memory has seen the Dolphin fans go into the season with high expectations only to be disappointed by season's end. We've made newsworthy offseason moves before and those move have provided some preseason excitement but they've yet to result in dramatic improvements in the win column. To some section of the fan base, this year's preseason excitement is always different from last year's preseason excitement. Then at season's end, we once again wind up with more excuses than wins. Will this season be different? Who knows? But there's no good reason for us to be taken any more seriously on the national level until we prove it on the field against quality opponents.

dolphins are exactly the kind of team where expectations and predictions will stay put until they see us gut out close games against good opponents

Still concerned about the O-Line... I didn't see a "check" up there for that goal.

If this team has a melt down MAINLY because of poor oline play AGAIN then EVERYONE deserves to be fired. The fact that D.Thoms is already being put on his butt and we don't have a clear insurance in place is scary!

I don't really care too much about National expectations...I'm just hoping this is the year we get out of this 7-9 win purgatory...I'll admit I'm real excited about the upcoming season..

How many writers ever put their credibility on the line by predicting big things for previously bad teams? It happens with a single team each year when some writer goes out on a limb and the others feel its safe to jump on the bandwagon (2014 tampa bay anyone).

Peter king is normally quicker to give us credit than most in prior years after we win a few (before the melt downs) . Maybe he's a closet fan.

But yeah....team just needs to win. Until we do, browsing NFL related articles will not be quite as satisfying as it could be. I aint gonna lie, after a big win i love reading about how our fins kicked some ass the following week

Dont care and I never cared about what others may think or say about the team. That is especially the case this season. I love what Joe Philbin has created in Miami and I love watching it. Wins will come when the team is ready. In the meantime, we have a young excellent qb. We are playing 3+ wides, spread, on vast majority of passing plays. We are running zone blocking read option on running plays. We have an exciting young talented receiving corp. It's just razzle dazzle on every play. It's the best thing Ive seen as a Dolphins fan ever. We rolled over the Pats, the Chargers, blew some teams out of the building last year. Went to Denver and kicked their arse on offense at mile high. The way we whooped the Ravens at hone in the first quarter was some of the best football Ive seen. The game at Detroit was one of the most physical games Ive seen. It was ass whooping on both sides. Unfortunately we lost Albert and Finnegan that game and it cost us dearly.

This team is young, talented, well coached, we have a fun winning system, and I cant wait for the season to start. Dont care about the record, I just want to see them play.

The meltdown is more so because Philbin is a pretty worthless HC. Yes the OL is weak but Philbin is much weaker

You mean 7 to 8 win purgatory. We haven't had anymore than 8 wins in 6 years

It's a two-pronged issue when it comes to public perception. One- We play in the same division with the Patriots, so most national sportswriters see us as a wild card team at best. Two- We haven't given them a reason to respect us in many years now. Once we start winning consistently, the respect will come. Honestly though, who cares what they think? Peter King is just a glorified Brady fanboy IMO.

We've planted ourselves squarely in the middle of the league for so many years now that nobody can expect it from us. I can't say that I don't understand why the national view of us is right where it is.
However, we are right now experiencing what I view as one of the most promising off-seasons in my memory. If we play to the potential we have on this team the reports will change real quick. We have been .500 or worse 8 of the last 10 years, how can we realistically expect the outside view of this teams year after year implosions to change before training camp even starts. I don't really pay much attention to what people say, for just these reasons. I am looking forward to the season and rooting for my team. We have a great deal to be positive about and this is the best "on paper" we have looked in so long. Now it's time to jump off the page and on the field and show the league that we are ready to be relevant.

We've been saying the respect will come once winning consistently happens for a long time. I want it to finally come to fruition!
