Positive
* Ryan Tannehill. Playing without starting Olinemen, Tannehill was poised and productive. He finished 15-19, 145 yards, 1 TD for 116.0 QB Rating. Tannehill got the ball out early and stayed clean.
* Jarvis Landry 84 yards on 5 receptions. He had a special catch and run for 46 yards.
* Lamar Miller had 22 yards on 6 carries and 31 yards on 5 receptions. He looked good in the passing game.
* Dallas Thomas. He was steady at LT. Missed a few blocks, but over all was not an issue. He had a great block on a screen pass.
* The starting Oline did a decent job considering. RT was protected and the run game was not awful.
* Rush defense…Atlanta had 50 yards on 24 carries…a 2.1 average. The Falcons had 0 yards rushing on 7 carries against Miami's starters.
* 6 total sacks for the defense. The starting Dline had 3 sacks. Olivier Vernon's sack was especially impressive as he was joined by Cam Wake and Ndamukong Suh. The pocket was collapsing all night on Atlanta's QB's.
* The 2nd team Dline showed well.
* 3rd down defense. Atlanta was held to 3-14 tonight.
* Red Zone defense…Atlanta was 0-2 and was kept out of the end zone altogether.
* The defense forced out Matt Ryan earlier than expected.
* Earl Mitchell was a beast tonight. 3 tackles, 2 TFL and 1 sack.
* Jelani Jenkins was active. 3 TOT…all solo with 1 TFL. He also had a sack.
* Koa Misi getting lots of reps.
* Mike Hull had a great game highlighted by his sequence helping stop the Falcons at the goal line. Hull stuffed a Falcons runner short of a TD and sacked the QB to stop the drive. Hull had 6 TOT with 6 solo, 1 TFL and 1 sack.
* Zach Vigil had 5 TOT with 5 solo.
* Neville Hewitt forced fumble to clinch the victory.
* DeAndre Coleman fumble recovery.
* Andrew Franks banged a 52 yarder to put the Dolphins up 4 late in the game. He had good kickoffs all night as well.
* Excellent punt coverage all night. Both Brandon Fields and Matt Darr punted the ball well and coverage teams downed punts routinely inside the ten.
* Bill Lazor's play design deserves a ton of credit tonight. With all the issues on the line, Lazor ran the ball a lot and had quick passes called. The screens, smoke screens and 3 step drops were perfect for this preseason game and with the shape the line is in. Great coaching job.
* Nice to get a win in the re-done stadium.
Negatives
* Turnover differential was 0.
* The offense was 2-12 on 3rd down.
* Miami started two drives in Atlanta territory and came away with nothing.
* Dallas Thomas false start penalty.
* J.D. Walton chop block penalty killing a big play.
* Jamil Douglas holding penalty.
* Jeff Linkenback giving up pressures.
* Matt Moore held on to the ball and got ear holed which caused a fumble.
* Matt Moore interception. He got his arm hit and the ball fluttered to a Falcons defender.
* Terrence Fede hands to the face penalty that nullified a Derrick Shelby sack.
* John Denney bad snap.
* Jelani Jenkins gave up on a tackle for a loss and let the ball carrier go. The ball carrier ended up getting positive yards. Jenkins needs to finish the play.
* Anthony Johnson jumping offsides again.
* Mike Pouncey injury.
* Game Pass is so far behind what is being Tweeted. It is not even close. Terrible product for $100.
Overall Assessment
* Most importantly tonight, Ryan Tannehill came out healthy. He needs to sit Thursday and be ready for a trip to Washington for Week One.
* While the Oline was not an issue tonight, it is still a major issue for this team. When is Branden Albert back? What is Jason Fox's status? Are Thomas and Billy Turner really ready for full-time guard duty? What is Pouncey's status? Who is off quality depth on the current roster?
* If Pouncey is out for an extended time, Samson Satele should be brought back in to keep the seat warm.
* The line, until it gets more talent or improves, is going to limit the playbook and play calling of Bill Lazor. Lazor is being very smart in terms of his play calls, but the calls will be limited in nature going forward.
* Dallas Thomas is more effective playing on the left side of the line. He is right when he says he is "left-handed".
* Lamar Miller has improved so much as a receiver since his rookie year.
* Should Matt Moore make this roster? I am sure he will and he has guaranteed money coming his way. However, he has looked lousy and while people can make excuses for him, his play appears to have regressed. Moore's best contribution is helping in the QB meeting room.
* Suh's impact on this defense, and specifically the Dline, has been amazing. This team needed to be more tough-minded attitude. They are playing physical play after play. This unit will be fun to watch this year.
* Who is kept at DT will be some of the most interesting of the roster cuts at the end of this week. Suh, Mitchell and Jordan Phillips are in. Does C.J. Mosley make it? He is an old Mike Tannenbaum draft pick and friend of Suh. Does A.J. Francis make it? Wide body that is cheap to keep. Anthony Johnson? DeAndre Coleman has flashed too. Should be very interesting to see what happens.
* The special teams have a ton of potential for this team. I truly think the special teams can make the difference in winning games at times this year.
* That said, would the team really go with two rookie specialists this year? Franks and Darr have looked excellent this summer. However, does a coach on the hot seat really trust his job with a rookie kicker and punter? I am not sure. That said, I like what the young kids have done.
* It would be good if LaMike James can win the returner jobs and keep Landry away from special teams. Disappointing he got knicked up later in the game.
