Positives

  • Jarvis Landry. Landry played so hard today. It did not matter the time and score. He had 165 yards today on 13 catches along with a TD. He is someone to build around.
  • DeVante Parker had a nice game. While much of his yards came when the game was out of reach, he did finish with 80 yards on 4 catches and a TD. What I liked best was how hard he was fighting late in the game when he scored his TD. Personally, I give Parker credit for catching a ball to break the infamous streak of not converting 3rd downs.
  • Ryan Tannehill’s toughness. Say what you will, but Tannehill is so tough. He put up with bad snaps, shotty pass pro and a score that was out of reach as the Jets knew he had to pass the ball. However, he did not blink and kept competing.
  • Execution of an onside kick.
  • Reshad Jones’ 4th down stop on the first drive. He finished with 7 TOT, 6 Solo and 1 TFL.
  • Olivier Vernon was active and had a sack. He also finished with 5 TOT, 4 solo and 1 TFL.
  • 1st Darr punt that was downed at the 3.
  • Brent Grimes’ 28 yard punt return. Showed great athletic ability.
  • Credit to Dan Campbell for being completely honest post game. Talking about how the offense is “anemic”, his team is in a “fragile” state and how his team was whipped by the Jets is all true. Coaches from the past would sugarcoat the issues. However, Campbell is wise to be honest and start making his team accountable for their performance.

Negatives

  • - 2 turnover differential.
  • 3rd down conversions. The offense was completely terrible here, again. They finished 4-15. However, none of the conversions came when the game mattered.
  • The running game got all of 12 yards on 9 carries for 1.3 yards per attempt.
  • The offense wasted great field position to start the game.
  • Ryan Tannehill had a poor game despite the stats. He threw some “ER Balls”. A ball he threw to Rishard Matthews knocked him from the game. He led Damien Williams into trouble. His interception was a poorly thrown ball in the scoring area. Other throws early in the game where off target. He was very inaccurate while the game was indoubt. Tannehill also had lousy ball security on a strip sack in the 4th quarter.
  • The offensive line play was bad. Jason Fox was beaten for a sack and had a penalty. All linemen took turns yielding pressure or broke down on run plays. The run game was not given a chance, but I question whether it had a chance to succeed because of the soft play inside. In replacing Mike Pouncey, Jamil Douglas rolled snap after snap back to the QB.
  • Kenny Stills trying to one hand a perfectly thrown ball.
  • Penalty on Jordan Cameron for a chop block that killed good field position.
  • No pass rush from Miami.
  • The offense did nothing after the 4th down stop. It was the Jets opening drive and the defense got a big stop. The offense did nothing with the field position let alone the field position.
  • The Jets converted 10-17 3rd downs.
  • The defense gave up TD’s 4 out of 5 times the Jets entered the Red Zone.
  • The Jets accumulated 411 yards.
  • Rush defense. 137 yards on 34 carries...4.0 per rush for the Jets.
  • New York averaged 7.2 yards per pass attempt.
  • Letting Ryan Fitzpatrick to go for 22-37, 277 yards, 4 TD and 118.9.
  • The defense gave up points after the Tannehill interception.
  • The defense yielded explosive plays all game.
  • The defense letting the Jets score 7 right before the end of the half.
  • Terrible response after the Miami’s first TD. Miami made it 21-7 with a lot of time left...the defense gave up a TD to seal the game.
  • Gave up 3 TD’s to the Jets on 3rd downs.
  • Chris Ivory breaking 5 tackles to score a TD.
  • So much for Ndamukong Suh’s fiery speech. What was said at this point, who knows. However, he did try to fire up the troops. A. they did not respond and B. he did not lead by example and make plays versus a terrible right guard.
  • Brent Grimes was abused.
  • Jamar Taylor. Simply a terrible corner. Picked on all day. He gives up completion after completion. He had his annual holding penalty as well.
  • Punt team giving up a 58 yard return to Jeremy Kerly.
  • Damien Williams not taking a knee on kick returns. Take the 20 yards.
  • Missed PAT after the third TD.
  • Andrew Franks cranking a kickoff out of bounds near the end of the game.
  • Terrible decision by Dan Campbell not to challenge a generous spot on a Chris Ivory run.
  • Run to pass ration today 58 to 9.
  • Awful idea to isolate Brent Grimes on Brandon Marshall. Grimes did not have a good game, but how is he supposed to compete for jump balls in the red area against a giant receiver?
  • Injuries. From Mike Pouncey to Earl Mitchell to Jelani Jenkins to C.J. Mosley to who else we do not know of, this team got beat up today.

Overall Assessment

  • The Dolphins are going to pick in the top five of the draft. I do not see much happening the rest of the year going in the positive direction. Between the impending coaching change to the issues on the line, to the problems the QB is having to the defense that cannot stop the run nor explosive plays, Miami might not win the rest of the year.
  • Miami is not even close in these games. Not that I want to lose close, but when Miami drops a game it is by double digits. It does not matter if Joe Philbin or Dan Campbell is coaching, Miami is getting whacked in most games.
  • This team is 0-5 in the division and have been outscored 175 to 72. They have lost each game by 13 plus points. Brutal.
  • As frustrating as the slow starts have been, just as bad is when the offense scores points, the defense gives them right back. A trend of the Philbin Era that continues.
  • Miami was 4-27 on 3rd down vs. the Jets this year.
  • Tannehill was right to call out Calvin Pryor. It was bush league to be celebrating when a player is down hurt. Pryor is trying to defend his actions and it is laughable. I have appreciated the work of Todd Bowles. However, his team plays to the echo of the whistle and his grinning on the sideline bothers me personally.
  • With all that said, Miami has to match the physicality of the division. The next regime needs to instill the ability to punch the opponent in the mouth. Joe Philbin evolved the Dolphins into a finesse team that over time became soft. RT was right to call out Pryor. However, who came to Matthews’ defense? A complete attitude change is needed between the new head coach and the personal changes on the roster.
  • Tannehill is specifically an individual that needs to step up within the division. While he has thrown for a ton of yards against the division opponents, he has produced few points and little in the way of wins. The game is a team sport, but the QB has more influence than any other position. Tannehill must solve the division foes.
  • Play DeVante Parker. I have been so critical since before the draft of the receiver. That said, play the kid. I am sure the front office that drafted him are angry he has not got more reps. I praise Matthews for his work this year. However, he will not be on the team next year. Parker, based on his draft status, will be counted on. While it was completely garbage time, he showed well. I love that he was playing hard. Play Parker the rest of the year. While we look for positives for 2016, a trio of Landry, Stills and Parker has the potential to be pretty good.
  • Along those lines, Campbell has to play some young pups more. I know he is coaching for his life, but perhaps the young kids produce. In turn, that will show good coaching. Discussed above was Parker. Try Tony Lippett over Jamar Taylor. Try Jordan Phillips over Earl Mitchell more. Try Bobby McCain at different corner spots. He has used Jay Ajayi more and got good results. Try some young players in spots of vets that have not produced.
  • How does the team not have a legit center/guard option in reserve. I questioned with vigor when Sam Brenner was cut about who was the backup center. The answer was obviously Jamil Douglas. What a disaster. I blame the front office most. How is there not a reliable snapper on the bench? Terrible roster management.
  • That said, the team needs to call Samson Satele. They cannot put out the charade of Douglas at center for the extended future. Show the team you have not given up and sign the veteran center that will know exactly what to do on day one.
  • Time to start discussing the next head coach. Personally, I pulled for Dan Campbell. I think he is a good guy and most of all, he was put in such a tough spot in getting the job. That said, he is not getting this job. Time to start to debate who will be the best fit as the next coach.
  • Ryan Tannehill is on the hot seat. One of the most important things that can happen between now and the end of the season is seeing him have success. Right now, he is not getting better. The franchise has put a ton of time and money on him. Tannehill has the skills and toughness to succeed. However, the team has to find ways to get him over the hump and find positives. Finding success is on Tannehill too. Something has to come together to have the QB and the offense in general find some success before the end of the year. Between the QB’s confidence, the offensive design and injuries on the line I wonder if that can happen. The offense will be stuck in the mud and I worry about RT’s health going forward.

you should write a player by player assessment. Who is here to stay long term, who can go next year.

I'm glad for the first time in over 12 years I made a choice to do something on Sunday besides watching a Dolphins game. I can't stand to watch Rt choke versus division opponents anymore while the defense is so bad by it's beyond words. Predictable and beyond frustrating.

Hayden - why are you certain that Rishard Matthews won't be on the team next year? He's a good player who has improved this year. Yes, he will be paid, but why wouldn't we be interested in resigning him? I see Jennings more of a likely cut.

I will do an end of the year assessment and offseason plan in which people can opine on. If you looked at my 2015 plan...lets just say my Oline was better than we see.

I got to be honest...I did not like the Parker pick, BUT by drafting him you have to think he is going to be projected as a major contributor. You have to let him play. Signing Matthews to a 4 to 6 million dollar deal is not cap savvy considering the other needs. Let him walk...maybe to success and roll with Landry, Stills and Parker.

Put that money into the line, a LB, a FS or signing another of your own.

Good write-up Hayden

Before today, I used to complain about Tannehill being incapable of leading this team to victory on his shoulders alone. Now, I question whether this team and staff could be bothered to win anything, unless the opponent is somehow just as bad as them. The incompetence is astronomical.

At this point, we don't deserve any meaningless late-season wins. The least this team can do for its fans is lose out. 4-12 and a top-5 draft pick. That's all I want out of this season now. And a complete house-cleaning.

The only way is up from here. The cupboard isn't as bare as the last time. Sean McDermott should be brought in to rebuild the defense. Rob Chudzinski should be the next OC. Give them a top 5 pick please.

Also, has anyone else noticed that the Texans are now 6-5?

Tannehill is struggling. However, the team needs to rally around him and find ways to have him succeed.

Got to make it work.

Fantastic write up Hayden. I was getting ready to have an argument with you had you not mentioned Parker but I'm glad you did. He should have made some plays that he didn't but the difference in comfort level you saw in him from beginning to end was astronomical. Let's see what the rookie has and look forward to getting a new HC next year. Once again thanks for the great write up.

There have been so many failures with personnel on both sides of the ball, but replacing Wallace with Stills has really hamstrung this offense IMO. Say what you will about Wallace, his speed demanded respect from opposing defenses and he routinely opened up intermediate routes for, other receivers last year. Stills has not come close to doing this, and the times he does get behind a defense he drops the ball at least 50% of the time. This offense has no ability to create mismatches and it is evidenced by the lack of scoring.
