Overall Assessment
- The team fought, grinded and found a way to win the game.
- + 1 turnover differential.
- The running game got 137 yards on 26 carries for a 5.3 average.
- Ryan Tannehill’s throw to DeVante Parker for a TD.
- Lamar Miller had 113 yards on 20 carries for a 5.7 average against an excellent run defense.
- DeVante Parker going for 63 yards on 3 catches and a TD. He averaged 21 yards a catch.
- The defense held Baltimore to 5-14 on 3rd down.
- Run defense was also much better. They held Baltimore to 94 yards on 26 carries for a 3.6 average.
- Red Zone defense. Baltimore was 0-2 in the red area.
- The pass rush was excellent. They had consistent pressure all game. They beat up Matt Schaub. He felt those hits today.
- 4th down stop as the Ravens were in a goal to go situation in the 2nd quarter.
- The defense forcing a field goal late in the 1st half.
- They also got a key stop in the Red Zone in the 4th. They forced a FG which made the game 15-13 and preserved the lead.
- The D had a huge series after the Miller fumble. The Ravens took over close to scoring territory, but the Dolphins defense did not budge. They forced a long field goal attempt to which Kicker Justin Tucker missed.
- Olivier Vernon was a monster again. He had 2.5 sacks, 6 TOT, 4 solo and 2 TFL. OV had sacks on 3rd down, plus he drew a holding penalty that killed a Ravens drive. Huge game by OV today.
- Reshad Jones had big game. First, he got an interception of Schaub that set up a Miami TD. He had 10 TOT, 7 solo and 1 PD. Jones had an awesome, heat-seeking tackle coming out of nowhere to cut down a Ravens RB. Jones was all over the place.
- Derrick Shelby’s athletic pick 6. Shelby swatted a Schaub pass in the air and snatched the ball and ran it in for a TD. It turned out to be a huge play. Shelby also had a half a sack.
- Suh was a force in the middle. Plus, Lou Anarumo move him around. While his stat total is not gaudy, he blew up the timing of run plays and helped pressure the QB.
- Benching Jamar Taylor.
- Great play call immediately after the Jones pick to go up top for a shot play Tannehill to Parker.
- Trusting Ryan Tannehill to make a huge completion to Parker while in the 4 minute offense late in the 4th. The conversion was huge in being able to kill more clock. It was a great throw and catch by the rookie.
- Taylor stayed committed to the run. The team got its running attempts today it was so missing before. By running so much they did not give up a sack until the last offensive play for Miami.
- Campbell going for two after two PAT attempts were missed.
- Finally, got some calls to go Miami’s way. The refs blew some calls that really helped Miami, none other than Baltimore’s long pass play that would have gone for six if it was not called back because a OPI on the Ravens.
Negatives
- A total of 15 points and only one TD created by the offense.
- 219 total yards.
- 8 1st downs
- 4-13 on 3rd down was Miami’s offense.
- Still way too many passes well in front of the sticks on 3rd down.
- Ryan Tannehill was not good today. Highly inaccurate. He finished 9-19 for 86 yards and a TD. His QB Rating was 78.
- The pass offense could do nothing against Baltimore’s poor pass defense.
- Miller’s 4th quarter fumble.
- Jordan Cameron false start that turned a 3rd and 2 to a 3rd and 7.
- Billy Turner was worked over today. He gave up pressures early and had a penalty that killed a drive.
- Missed tackles.
- Brent Grimes’ effort on Baltimore’s lone TD. Not sure why he was watching the play as the runner went for six.
- Bobby McCain playing on the boundary. .
- Granted there were penalties against Baltimore, but Andrew Franks could not get a PAT threw after the second TD.
- Tony Lippett illegal block that killed great Miami field position.
- Matt Darr’s 28 yard punt.
- Damien Williams insisting on taking the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs.
- Terrible 3rd down call late in the 4th as Miami was trying to seal the game. Miami had a 3rd and 3. Baltimore was out of TO’s. The Fins were in no man’s land in terms of a FG. With Baltimore blocking FG’s left and right, they were not going to attempt one. The rollout, run/pass option was a disaster as it lost yards. Tannehill was smart to stay in bounds and abort the play. Terrible idea and design.
- The CBS D Crew that Miami will likely get the rest of the year on Sunday’s once again went into a commercial while there was a flag on the field. They went to the ad as Miami supposedly had the ball at the 40, but because of Lippett’s penalty Miami was around the 20. I knew the ball was being moved back via Twitter. However, all the same, it is just so sloppy. Another example of a terrible broadcast team presented by CBS.
Overall Assessment
- A ton of credit to Dan Campbell. He is not getting the head coaching job. However, he is doing things his way as he tries to fight for it. From firing Bill Lazor to benching Taylor to playing his rookies to demanding the ball be run more, Campbell will have very few regrets when this season is over. He is certainly a man of conviction.
- Ryan Tannehill got the offensive coordinator he wanted. There was no Bill Lazor today. However, the offense outside the commitment to the run, was just as bad in its production. This offense needs the QB to step up. Tannehill needs to do better. He had a poor Ravens pass defense today and did nothing with it. He finishes with bad pass defenses with the New York Giants, Chargers and Pats. The Colts pass defense is okay, but is still nothing to get too excited about. He should be able to have success against all of them. Tannehill has to get better. No more excuses.
- I hated the 3rd and 3 call at the end of the game as Miami was trying to run out the clock. Run the ball between the tackles. If you say you are going to be a physical team, run the ball and if you are short of the first down, go for it on 4th down. They were not going to try a field goal after what we saw from that leaky field goal protection. Instead they ran this ridiculous run/pass option play. Tannehill made a smart decision to eat it and kill more clock, but it also forced a punt and the Ravens did have another chance to play offense. Bad clock/end of the game management.
- I have been a big critic of DeVante Parker since his selection. Tonight, I tip my cap to him for a very solid game.
- The defense did have some huge plays and stops today. However, they did let Matt Schaub go off for 32-46, 308 yards, 1 TD and 2 interceptions. Miami will face some elite QB’s to finish. Today’s pass coverage will not cut it. If the pass rush does not hit home, they cannot hold up in the back end. I am not sure what can be done at this point, but whether it is through scheme, technique or personnel changes, Miami has to tighten up in coverage or they are going to get scorched to finish the year.
- Miami has no CB opposite of Brent Grimes. Bobby McCain battles, but he cannot play outside. Taylor is a disaster. I guess I would go back to Brice McCain at this point and see if Bobby McCain can be developed into a nickelback going forward. CB is the biggest need along with MLB going into the offseason.
- It is vital that Miami re-sign Olivier Vernon. I got into some heated discussions with other posters this morning about what to do with him and OV made me look good today. He is a 25 year old pass rusher that is still getting better. Miami cannot let him walk out the door. I understand he is going to command a lot of money. However, Miami needs to find the math to make both sides happy. This is a vintage situation of keeping your own.
- Watching the rugged Kelechi Osemele playing LG today, makes me want to make a run at him during the first part of free agency. I would love for the Fins to become a more physical team with the next coaching staff and Osemele would be a great player to build behind.
- Fired up to see the throwback uniforms next week on Monday night.
- I just do not want to be a punchline and be embarrassed next week. All the eyes of the league will be on Sun Life and the Giants will be a tough matchup. So many times when the Fins have the stage they come up completely small. Here is hoping for something different.
