Overall Assessments
- The offense was 2-2 in scoring TD’s in the Red Zone.
- Got seven points the first drive out of halftime.
- Ryan Tannehill. 30/44 359 yards, 2 TD’s and 108 QB Rating. He made a great play on a TD pass in which he scrambled out of the pocket and threw on the run for a TD. He, again, showed toughness after being under duress in the 2nd half.
- Jarvis Landry was excellent today. He was available for his QB all game. Used in a variety of ways, Landry played physical and was one of the best players on the field today. He had 110 yards on 8 catches.
- Rishard Matthews was excellent today. He had 115 yards on 6 catches. He had a long of 48 yards demonstrating great concentration on the tipped ball.
- Jake Stoneburner with his first career TD catch.
- Jason Fox gets credit for scooping a fumble out of the end zone and saving the team from a safety.
- Red Zone defense. Jacksonville was only 1-3 scoring TD’s in the red area.
- Reshad Jones. Playing with hurt leg, Jones was again active. 11 TOT, 8 Solo, 1 TFL.
- Jelani Jenkins 12 TOT, 9 Solo, 2 TFL.
- Brent Grimes played well. He was strong in coverage. Finished with 6 TOT, 5 Solo and 2 PD’s.
- Kelvin Sheppard’s 3rd and short stop with a finish by Ndamukong Suh. It gave the offense a chance to win the game.
- Spencer Paysinger had a TFL to force a FG (game winner), but gave the offense a chance to tie the game by stopping the 1st down.
- Andrew Franks hit 2 of 3 FG’s and his PAT’s. He once again banged his KO’s through the back of the end zone.
Negatives
- Another slow start.
- Not able to finish.
- No points in the last 6 possessions
- The defense giving up the deciding points on the final drive.
- No created turnovers
- 13 penalties for 112 yards.
- Dallas Thomas.
- Ja’wuan James. He had an awful day. He got hit for multiple holding penalties. He also had a killer false start penalty that caused the team to lose a timeout.
- The Oline was whipped in the 2nd half. The pass protection was terrible.
- The run game had nothing going as they had 42 yards rushing.
- Greg Jennings drop that would have gone for big yards.
- The defense giving up too many explosive plays.
- No pass rush. Zero sacks versus a team that yield the most sacks in the league in the past year.
- Olivier Vernon had a mind-numbing penalty at the end of the game as he went to retaliate against Clay Harbor that essentially put the Jags in easy field goal range.
- Vernon was also called for offsides on a key 3rd down on the opening drive of the game which helped extend the drive that ended with 7 points for the Jags.
- All on the drive that ended with a long TD pass to Allen Robinson 1) the defense lost contain on Blake Bortles which he churned out 26 yards on a scramble 2) Jamar Taylor was dinged for illegal contact extending the drive 3) Walt Aikens blew his coverage allowing Robinson to score the easy TD.
- Brent Grimes’ dropped pick at the end of the 1st half.
- Brice McCain’s PI at the end of the half to set up a Jags long FG.
- Walt Aikens penalty.
- Franks’ miss at the end of the half.
- Matt Darr’s 4th quarter punt that sailed in the end zone.
- Joe Philbin deciding to give up a timeout as opposed to taking the ten second runoff at the end of the first half. It was such a bad decision. The team was close enough and did not need the time to get closer. They needed the TO’s to keep open the entire playbook. Plus, after the Franks miss, the Jags drove the field enough to make a long FG. The Jags would not have had time to march down the field if Philbin had taken the runoff.
- The questionable spot after the McCain PI that led to the long Jags’ FG that scraped over the crossbar.
Overall Assessments
- I laughed at people (in the media, fans here and on the Fins own website) that talked about not only getting a win, but having “style points”. This team is far from being in a position to determine how win looks.
- Miami lost to a young, but still poor football team that was missing their best defender, SS, LT and TE. It is totally an unacceptable loss.
- Today was a microcosm of a Dolphins game under Joe Philbin: slow start, his team scores a TD after halftime, different phases not playing off each other and not finishing.
- Where was the sense of urgency on this team?
- It is time they look to make changes up front. Jeff Linkenbach and Jacques McClendon both have NFL starting experience. Billy Turner is a strong kid that has potential. Dallas Thomas needs a seat. Jamil Douglas is getting worked. Perhaps, the team could look to some experience upfront in the coming weeks in place of “upside” and athletic ability.
- Kevin Coyle is completely overmatched.
- What is more, I think if Coyle came up with a solution, I do not think his team believes in him anyway.
- How does this “vaunted” D-line not have a sack today against that O-line.
- When Louis Delmas went down, I stated that Michael Thomas should get the nod over Walt Aikens. Aikens has potential, but right now the team needs an intelligent, heady player in the back end. Thomas is that guy.
- I am tired of the talk coming from Philbin. Each week, we get a story of how Joe is “building relationship with his players” or he is building a “new culture”. The bottom line is this team still looks exactly the same as they have looked in his years as a head coach.
- In fact, watch next week, two teams meeting in Miami that came off of two tough losses. Both teams should be in rally mode. However, watch the Bills rally around Rex Ryan, who despite his faults, has his team’s respect and the team knows Rex is going to be around for a long time in Orchard Park. Philbin, on the other hand, will have a team that is unenergized and with players not willing to fight for the head coach. The two leaders could not be more diametrically different.
- Watch the injury front this week. Tannehill was banged up. Miller had an ankle. Cam Wake was MIA in the 2nd half. Jordan Cameron had injury to his groin. Albert obviously left the game. This game will hurt a lot more come next week.
- Steve Ross missed an opportunity in not allowing Mike Tannenbaum to select his own coach. The franchise missed a chance to align the vision of the front office and head coach. Now, we have to go through the song and dance of Philbin trying to coach his way to survival. Once he is eventually fired, Tannenbaum will be allowed to hire his new coach, but one later than it had to be. Tannenbaum would have had his choice of Rex Ryan, Dan Quinn and others.
- I believe this team will be 1-3 going into the bye. That would mean two home losses...the opener in a gorgeous redone stadium and another in London with the entire nation watching. That would make for two home division losses and three straight losses to AFC opponents. The season would be in serious jeopardy. One has to think that Joe Philbin could be in trouble going into the bye. Plus, I believe that Bill Lazor has potential as a head coach. Why not allow him to see what he can do for 12 games? LB coach Mark Duffner has some past experience as a defensive coordinator as well. I truly believe this team is going to quit on Joe Philbin. What is the point if this team goes 1-3 into the bye of keeping Philbin on? Change it up and perhaps salvage the season.
