Positives

  • Rishard Matthews had 113 yards on 6 receptions and 2 TD’s.

Negatives

  • Another slow start.
  • Minus 3 turnover differential.
  • Dallas Thomas. Holding call killed a drive. He was beaten repeatedly on this inside.
  • Jarvis Landry popping the ball in the air for an interception.
  • Ryan Tannehill throwing a pick six as he is blasted by blitzer.
  • Tannehill throwing a pick on 4th down right before the end of the half. He forced a throw into double coverage while replays show the hot receiver wide open down the seam. The Bills turned the pick into three points.
  • Tannehill struggled today. He was 26-49 for 297 yards, 2 TD’s, 3 ints for 59.7 QB Rating. He turned the ball over too much, but two were not completely on him. He missed consistently in the red zone on two different trips.
  • Pass protection. Nonexistent at times. RT took way too many hits.
  • Red Zone offense: 0-2.
  • The offense was 4-13 on 3rd down.
  • The defense was 7-13 on 3rd down.
  • Run defense gave up 151 yards on 34 carries for a 4.4 average. 41 yard TD run by Karlos Williams was the exclamation point in which there were bad angles taken and missed tackles.
  • The pass defense was awful. Tyrod Taylor was 21-29...9.6 per attempt and 3 TD’s. Miami had no sacks and barely pressured the QB.
  • Brice McCain. Was repeatedly beat on the outside. He gave big cushions and was beat easily in front and other times he was beat over the top.
  • Walt Aikens blowing his assignment and not giving help to Jamar Taylor which ended up with a Chris Hogan TD catch.
  • Derek Shelby hands to the face penalty after a 3rd down stop.
  • Aikens running into the punter and giving the Bills a first down.
  • Andrew Franks missed PAT.
  • 3rd down pitch play to Landry. Bizarre call.
  • Going for it at mid field before the half. The team was out of sorts and needed to regroup at half. Instead they forced the issue and committed another turnover and gave up more points.
  • 2nd and goal from the 2, Bill Lazor called 4 pass plays after having some success running the ball to get down to the 2.
  • Consistently throwing fade routes in the red area.
  • Jordan Phillips a healthy scratch.

Overall Assessment

  • Where are the posters that said guard play did not matter all that much? The fact of the matter, is the front office neglecting to work the position in free agency or trades. There is no running game because of bad guard play and too many passing plays have pressure coming right into Tannehill’s lap. Along those lines, I called for an upgrade at backup OT. With Albert’s injury last year, it was obvious that he would need time to come back effectively and the idea of another leg injury because of the knee was completely obvious. Yet, the FO did not take the vital position seriously enough and are paying the price right now.
  • With all that said, how does this staff roll out the same offensive line that finished the Jaguars game? How is a Jeff Linkenbach and Billy Turner not getting opportunities?
  • You could see the difference in coaching today. I knew that would be the case. Rex Ryan had his team ready to recover off of an embarrassing loss last week. They had a great plan the team believed in and executed to perfection. Joe Philbin’s team off of a bad loss in front of a charged crowd, played worse than last week. There was another slow start, no answers on defense, inability to move the football and simply an uninspired performance. The Bills know Ryan will be there coach for the foreseeable future and respect him as a head coach. The Dolphins do not trust nor respect Philbin and these flat performances are the end result. Rex Ryan showed more energy and enthusiasm up 34-8 coaching his defense up then Philbin has ever demonstrated.
  • Does any other team have ex-team members come back and get revenge more than the Fins. From Charles Clay, to Dan Carpenter, to Richie Incognito, to Chris Hogan, they all had big games today.
  • Anytime Darius Rucker does the anthem, they lose. Hootie “makes me cry”.
  • I am superstitious guy and after the bevy of Tweets about Tannehill’s interception-less streak, I knew they jinxed “the no hitter”.
  • There needs to be some major personnel moves to see if they can provide some consistency and maybe provide a spark. Here are the moves I would make for the Jets game:

  • Ju’wuan James to LT
  • Jeff Linkenbach to RT
  • Billy Turner to LG (Dallas Thomas has to be benched)
  • Jamar Taylor to CB and Brice McCain to CB
  • Michael Thomas to FS full-time
  • Jarvis Landry, Rishard Matthews, Devante Parker and Jordan Cameron should be on the field in 11 Personnel.
  • I would also contemplate moving Misi to MLB and placing a combination of Chris McCain and Spencer Paysinger at SLB.

  • Landry, Matthews and Cameron are the most effective receivers. They need to play and get into rhythm with the QB. Greg Jennings is at a point where his reps can go to Parker. Kenny Stills is the odd man out.

  • The season is on the line next week. Go to 2-2 and things are stable. The team would head into the bye in a position to get some players back and take a look at personnel fits and scheme. Lose and everything is on the table. The team would be 1-3, 0-2 in the division with both losses at home. There is cannon-like separation between 2-2 and 1-3.
  • If this team does lose to the Jets in London, major coaching shakeups have to be contemplated. First of all, it could be argued that Kevin Coyle should be dismissed tonight. Coyle has no answers as the defensive coordinator. His schemes, calls and techniques are not working and he is getting nothing out of talented players. LB coach Mark Duffner used to be a DC in the NFL. He is has good energy and might provide a spark for the defense.
  • It also begs the question of what does Steve Ross do with Joe Philbin if the team lays an egg in London. The team simply does not respond to him. How many edicts does Philbin put out each week as to what the team needs to improve upon and that improvement never occurs? While Bill Lazor has not had a great year, I still state that he has a head coaching look and possesses leadership skills. How can Ross let this uninspired team go out each week under Philbin. While I do not think Ross will fire Philbin in season, another ghastly performance in London should push Ross to make a move and salvage the season. Perhaps they find something in Bill Lazor.
  • That said, maybe it is good this team heads out of the country. It will allow them to have a bit of a bunker mentality and rally around each other. The Fins have to be the more desperate team next week.
  • Finally, I feel for the Dolphins fans at Sun Life Stadium. They came out in big numbers and were ready to go. They did their part and yet this Joe Philbin led team played like they were unprepared and uninspired. We who live out of the area should not complain when the stadium is empty. The team has to give them something to get pumped about and they just do not do that.

Does Miko Grimes getting arrested count as a positive?

I knew someone would go there. If I was in a joking mood, yes. However, it is a negative in that it provides another distraction and embarrassment.

Nice positives.

Here's all I can say: In 4 of our last 5 games, we have made Teddy Bridgewater, Geno Smith, Blake Bortles, and now Tyrod Taylor look like all-stars. All four of those quarterbacks have struggled recently when not playing against the Miami Dolphins. We have made Suh look like an average football player. We don't have a running game and we constantly make bonehead mistakes.

I'm sorry, but there is a common thread here.

Well put, my friend.

In regards to Michael Thomas, I thought he started today and he was a huge culprit on the Clay TD of a simply lackadaisical effort. That's not the type of play a fringe starter can survive. Unfortunately Aikens has been even worse.

This is a dainty finesse team playing in a smash mouth game full of stone cold killers. At times I really felt like I could have run out there and tackled Bills players harder and shed more tackles than any player we had...and I'm a friggin wuss!

Rishard Matthews is this year's Jelani Jenkins.....another guy this coaching staff wouldn't give an opportunity. Always excuses....immature, unprepared, whatever. Stick with guys like Hartline and Gibson. When he finally forces their hand, it becomes obvious that he should have been playing all along.

Hayden you hit it on the head again, I just disagree about Philbin, I think he should be fired before London along with Coyle and go to Lazor and the LB as D/C….it cannot be worse than Philbin, and hopefully they will make the personnel decisions you are suggesting, cause philbin and coyle won't…..

Thanks Hayden. Nice write up. I would fire Philbin in-season...and Coyle would have been dismissed at half time.
