Positives

* 2 minute drive before half time that went 93 yards on 11 plays. It ended with a Tannehill to Clay TD pass.
* Ryan Tannehill. He went 23-39 for 259 yards and 1 TD. His QB Rating was a respectable 87.4. Tannehill threw some nice balls with one being the TD throw to Charles Clay. The ball was thrown on a rope. He took a ton of punishment all game, but kept on getting up for the next play.
* Lamar Miller went for 178 yards on 19 carries for a crazy 9.4 yards per carry. Miller's TD came on a franchise long of 97 yards.
* Brian Hartline had 94 yards on 5 catches for 18.8. Hartline had a pretty catch on a 3rd down as he jumped over the DB.
* Charles Clay. 45 yards on 5 catches and a TD.
* The defense held the Jets to 1 TD in 5 trips in the Red Zone.
* The run defense was decent today. The Jets finished with 104 yards on 34 carries for a 3.1 average.
* Randy Starks had a sack on 3rd down that pushed the Jets back which Nick Folk missed the ensuing kick.
* Reshad Jones forced fumble that was recovered by Jason Trusnik.
* Koa Misi stopping the Jets ball carrier short of a 1st down on a 4th down play close to the goal line.
* R.J. Stanford taking down the Jets kick return before he could score. The Jets eventually went for it on 4th down and came up short.
* Won time of possession 31:16 to 28:44
* Joe Philbin was right to challenge the ball that hit Geno Smith in the foot that caromed to a Dolphins defender. He had to challenge such a play.
* I like how Bill Lazor ran the ball in the red area which resulted in a score.

Negatives

* Even Turnover Differential 1-1.
* Miami had two trips into the red area and score one TD.
* 4-13 on 3rd down was the offense.
* Too many pass plays well in front of the sticks on 3rd down.
* The opening part of the game…Jarvis Landry takes the ball out deep from his own end zone on the kickoff. He is dropped at the 10. The series ends in a three and out with an ugly sack mixed in. The sack almost went for a safety. Simply a terrible start.
* The pass protection was abysmal. Ja'wuan James was abused. Daryn Colledge was beaten routinely. Samson Satele yield at least a sack and plenty of pressure. The Jets had 7 sacks and had numerous hits on the QB.
* Jason Fox had two penalties.
* Daniel Thomas getting Damien Williams' reps.
* Giving up 37 points to the Jets.
* 494 total yards for the Jets.
* The Jets converted 6 of 14 on 3rd down.
* The defense giving up points after Miami's offense scores. Miami went up 14 to 10 and the defense gave up 7 on the next Jets drive. The TD was scored by a wide open Chris Ivory in the flat. From there, one of the most electrifying plays of the year…Miller goes for 97 yards. The Fins are up 10. What happens on the next Jets drive? A long bomb on 3rd down, in which Cortland Finnegan has no idea where the ball is, as Eric Decker goes for a big play. The Jets end up scoring a TD.
* Geno Smith had 358 yards passing. 20-25 with 3 TD's and a 158.3 rating.
* 13.9 yards per Jets passing attempt.
* Decker had 221 yards on 10 catches and 1 TD.
* Lack of productivity of the DT's vs. a Center playing his first NFL game with Nick Mangold out.
* Derrick Shelby getting caught inside and playing undisciplined on the Jets first TD.
* Brent Grimes being smoked by Eric Decker and Chris Owusu.
* Falling asleep on a fake punt that basically iced the game for the Jets.
* A Jets 87 yard kick off return to start the 2nd Half.
* Caleb Sturgis' weak kickoffs.
* Sturgis' miss from 53.
* 40 yards on 5 penalties.
* No flag on Muhammad Wilkerson for using the crown of his helmet to RT's helmet.
* The ball hit Geno Smith in the foot. How does the ref blow that dead to begin with? How does a ball bounce like that if it did not hit him in the foot? It was a copout that there was "no visual evidence" to overturn it. Bad call.
* Joe Philbin had short yardage situations in which he elected to kick a field goal and punt. Then later in the game Philbin went for it on 4th and 5. There was indecision in which a timeout had to be used. From there, the play was ill-conceived as the pass was thrown well short of the sticks. The coach had a terrible day on 4th down.
* The team was simply out coached.

Overall Assessment

* Over the past few weeks, I advocated for Rex Ryan being the next Dolphins coach if Philbin was fired. I had many posters claim that Philbin was already a better coach. Does anyone want reset that debate tonight?
* The Jets scored the most points they scored all year today. Let that sink in.
* How does a team that is going to fire its GM and HC and will clean house outplay, out coach and outclass the team that supposedly has "continuity"? The Jets played their "Super Bowl" last week. The coach is supposedly cleaning out his desk and joking about knowing he is getting fired. Yet, that team comes into Sun Life Stadium and wins easy by ten…unacceptable.
* Did you see a team in Miami team that truly respected their coach and were concerned about a strong finish to the season? I do not buy that the players "love" and "appreciate" Joe Philbin. Never have and never will.
* How many times are the Jets going to be allowed to beat a Joe Philbin team at Sun Life Stadium and act like clowns each time in wining? In kills me, that Philbin's team is so meek and allows it to happen time and time again.
* I cannot stand how this defense gives up points immediately after Miami scores points. It is maddening. The team has no understanding of momentum and how to keep it. After that Miller run…simply an incredible run…the team goes up 10 points. It should have been game over at that point. Instead, Miami finds a way to lose by 10? All year, Miami scored points and turned around and gave points to the opposition.
* Kevin Coyle must be fired. I understand that the pickings could be slim with Philbin a lame duck. However, there will be someone of quality that would want the job. As I mentioned before, there will be candidates that will want to rekindle their head coaching flame and might be willing to take a chance with Dolphins defense. Bottom line: Kevin Coyle must go.
* With his head coaching career on the line, is Joe Philbin really going to be loyal to Coyle? Maybe Mr. Ross should step in again like he did last year with Mike Sherman and Jim Turner. This defense gave up 28,41, 35 and 37 points to end the year. Simply awful.
* The changes on defense should not just happen with Coyle. An overhaul must happen. I am fine having Wake, Earl Mitchell, Olivier Vernon, Jelani Jenkins, Brent Grimes and Reshad Jones coming back as starters. The rest of the positions must be filled in free agency, draft or in house (such as Dion Jordan to SLB). The scheme and the personnel must totally be redone.
* IF Mike Wallace did quit on the team, he needs to be traded and if no partner is found, released. There are many receivers that would fit this offense and be a good teammate. I ready for Wallace to go elsewhere and thrive etc. However, someone not willing to pull his weight with his teammates is a cancer. The interview display with Brandon Gibson was disgusting as well. Immature and embarrassing. This coaching staff tried hard to get the ball to Wallace and this is how he "repays" them? Hartline could have been a baby earlier this year, but all he did was work hard. Perhaps, there is another explanation or cooler heads prevail, but I am ready to jettison Wallace.
* Brandon Gibson can join him for being a high cap number and playing along with Wallace.
* Koa Misi needs to be released. He tries hard, but he is not a fit in the middle and cannot finish a game. Someone with more talent and that is more reliable has to replace him.
* Rishard Matthews is in a lot of trouble this offseason.
* Caleb Sturgis needs to be replaced. He is way too inconsistent especially from long range. His kickoffs are short and giving the opposition good field position.
* First time in Dolphins history they had a 4,000 yard passer and 1,000 yard rusher.
* Ryan Tannehill going over 4,000 yards is simply tremendous. He is getting better and better and he is the best hope Miami has right now.
* I feel great for Lamar Miller. What a spectacular way to go over 1,000 yards…a 97 yard, franchise long TD run. He had a very nice season.
* Damien Williams has to factor in somehow with a wider role next season. Productive player.
* Will not see the Jets at Sun Life until 2016. Maybe it is a good thing Miami is playing the Jets in London next year based on the results from the past few years.
* Steve Ross' timing of emphatically brining Philbin back looks completely stupid right now and his reasoning behind it. This team just lost 3 of 4 in December. Let that marinate.
* 9 wins was my bar to return Philbin. He did not reach it. This team is in a perfect spot to overhaul many parts of the roster. It is in a perfect spot for someone else's touch to make things better. Yet, because of "continuity" Joe Philbin returns as head coach.
* Shame on those fans saying today's game did not matter in the hours leading up to kickoff. 9-7 would have meant a winning season. 9-7 would have meant a winning streak of two games to finish the year. A 9-7 record would have meant a win versus the Jets. A 9-7 record would not have me feeling as low as we are right now. Never say a game does not matter. This loss is one of the worst scenarios possible.
* My tune will change with time, but I am not looking forward to next year at all. There are holes everywhere on the depth chart. There is a tough schedule. Most of all, there is lame duck coach that I have zero confidence can figure out how to be a leader and create a culture of success. This is a low time right now.
* Thank you for those that read this every week. I love the discussion. I love your thoughts. I love your debate. I enjoy doing this for the give and take and on days like today it is cathartic. Happy New Year!

Good stuff as always. Two straight years losing to the Jets at home in our season's final game. Even worse it seems that our team has more problems currently than it did when Philbin became coach 3 years ago. So depressing.

Sad that we have a 4000 passer, and a 1000 rusher yet finished 8-8. Those were empty yards for the most part between the 20's. Still can't believe Ross sticking with Philbin...

A culture of mediocrity that never changes, a coaching staff that has no agression, an offensive line that still sucks, a lack of offensive playmakers, an NFL average QB, and a defense that need more new starters than it has returning quality players. Yes, next year promises to be another exciting exercise in mediocrity!

This....Depending on how the schedule is laid out next season I can easily see a poor start and Philbin being shown the door. Since he's a lame duck he'll get no respect from the players. They're going to finish 8-8 or worse next year and everyone will get blown out. The new GM will have to make the decision on Tannehill's 5th year option.

Rinse and repeat.

What is funny is I bet we want those 7 or 8 wins. I think this team is in a world of hurt.

This is down to Dennis Hickey having the offseason of all off season's.

Frank Gore had another 144 today. too old? or just too stupid?

Gore Miller ticket. draft G's.

I was following online periodically. It boggles the mind how the D stops the jest on the goal line, have Lamar make an incredible play, & then turn around and give up momentum. In large part, this was the game.

More than any other sport, Football is about momentum. Philbin & Coyle obviously don't inderstand this crucial concept. This is where a more aggressive style on D would be more beneficial.

Agreed. In sports, you are only as good as your last game. Beating the jest would have given the phins a winning record at home, in the AFCE, & overall. It might have even given them positive traction (dare I say momentum) for 2015?

Hayden, great job. You know, you have a ton of data in your weekly recaps. I don't know if you have them saved in a folder, but they could probably be mined for some wicked season trends and summaries. For example, trends of coaching, red zone, etc. Just a thought.

This is down to Dennis Hickey having the offseason of all off season's.

I did a little bit of math. Since '78 (when the 16 game schedule began), the phins are averaging 8.8 wins per yr. I did not count the strike season of 82.

Sadly & frustratingly, the phins are stuck in a cycle of parity that the league & media think is so wonderful.Jimmy Johnson once said, "...its easy getting from 1-15 to 8-8. Going from 8-8 to 12-4 is the real trick."

Hayden is right about it all being on DH.

The 2 things I'm lobbying for in the offseason are; OL depth, a DC with an aggressive scheme... and trading Wallace for Fitzgerald....

I agree with your thoughts and feelings. The defense failed miserably and the offense became one-dimensional in the 4th qtr. Lazor should be better in year 2. If Tannehill told Wallace to "f' off," he has become the leader we need. In free agency, we need to cut good but overpaid players. Wallace will apologize for his meltdown today. Aponte will earn her money this off-season. We are in a tight cap situation but must improve the OL yet again. We must install a new defense. We have overpaid players at WR and LB. Finnegan will be cut. Ultimately, we learned we have a good QB and a good running back. The Wallace meltdown today unmasked some deep issues between Wallace and Lazor that were hinted at 3 weeks ago. Wallace wants to win but is immature. Lazor was hired to help Tannehill. I believe Marino has been a friend and mentor. Ireland vastly overpaid Hartline and Ellerbe. We must shore up the line play through the draft and free agency. Hickey filled a lot of holes in his first year.

Sounds like Wallace asked out of the game…not acceptable.

Week after week you give us absolute gems! I'm thankful for your assessments as it enhances this forum every single week win or lose.

Some day these assessments will be littered with positives after consecutive winning seasons, one can dream right?

Yes sir. One day. It will come when there is a shared vision at the top of the organization and a head coach that has leadership skills.
