Head Coach Tracker

UPDATED as of Jan 8th 6:00 PM

So let's keep count. We _think_ it is:

Team......……… Coach
Green Bay........ Matt LaFleur (Confirmed)
Tampa Bay....... Bruce Arians (Confirmed, with Todd Bowles likely his DC)
Arizona......……. Kliff Kingsbury (Confirmed)
Cleveland......… Freddie Kitchens OR Kevin Stefanski (Rumored Finalists)
Denver....……… Mike Munchak OR Vic Fangio (Rumored Finalists)
Cincinnati:
New York:
Miami:

Zero NFC vacancies and three AFC vacancies.

Arians to Tampa is strong. I really like that pairing just as a football fan. He's got some weapons down there to play with. And the timing with Bowles possibly reuniting to become his DC again, that is pretty sweet. Good for them. I'd be thrilled if I was either man. I don't think anyone is really optimistic with Winston, but if he has a chance to improve Arians is a good bet to make it happen. If not, the man will move on and get his new QB.

I wasn't a huge Jason Licht fan, but I think he hit a home run recruiting Bruce Arians as Head Coach and then Todd Bowles as Defensive Coordinator. Jamies Winston may be the death of that team, but if there's anyone who can coax the best out of Winston, it's Arians.

Home run for the Buccaneers.

My 2cents worth is lets pick rizzi and ride with him for a year and see whats available after that.Flores almost tempted me but everybody that left the pats has not done anything good. And he sure didn't look like a defensive guru to me.

Stephen Ross and Chris Grier were really active last weekend to meet with Kris Richard, Dennis Allen, Eric Bienemy and Flores and now things seem pretty quiet. We may well have our next Coach clearly identified, but because their teams - the Dallas Cowboys, the New Orleans Saints, the Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots are all focused on this weekend's playoff games, it would be an inappropriate distraction for the respective co-ordinators if our team's desires were leaked.
However, I think that it's really significant that 3 of these 4 are Defensive guys, while the past five Dolphins Head Coaches (Adam Gase, Dan Campbell, Joe Philbin, Tony Sparano and even Cam Cameron) all came from an Offensive background. 3 years ago when Adam Gase was appointed, I seem to recall that a high percentage of the prospects interviewed were predominantly Offensive guys. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Stephen Ross may still do his thing and appoint a known existing beloved Dolphin, Darren Rizzi to the job, but my read is that when other teams like Arizona, Tampa Bay and Green Bay have all appointed Offensive guys, we are set to go in the other direction, by appointing a Defensive guy and my hunch is that it will be Kris Richard. In fact it is significant that we didn't even attempt to interview someone like Kliff Kingsbury, Bruce Arians or Matt Le Fleur. We're set to hand the reins to a Defensive guy.

Excellent analysis Spike! That really opened my eyes about their intentions (off. vs def.). I am fully on board the RICHARD train & will be VERY DISAPPOINTED with a FLORES selection. Patriot assistants suck! There I said it. :nuke:

The longer this goes, the fewer coaches that are available to build a staff with. Even if we get our guy, I feel like the staff around him may not be ideal. I was really hoping to get Bowles back as DC. He gone...

My alma mater USC is all butt hurt about Kliff Kingsbury departing. It was a patch job anyway, a desperate move by Clay Helton to appease fans and save his job.

Hilarious threads on the USC sites. So much whining. I was trying to tell them we need to root for Kingsbury to win big with the Cardinals, so USC can advertise as a stepping stone to head coaching greatness...a second example to go along with Pete Carroll.

Besides, USC won the men's water polo national title recently. Good times. I roomed with two water polo players.

Kingsbury fits best in the NFL anyway. Balanced personnel. He was stuck at Texas Tech where no chance you can get a fair shake in recruiting. Unless the offense is mega elite you are going to get outscored. He had Mahomes, then at least an experienced senior the season after Mahomes left. This year he found a promising freshman quarterback and was very competitive until that freshman had a freak lung injury and couldn't play the final month or so.

I'm glad Arians came back. Seemed premature for his career to end. Not based on age but energy and gas remaining in the tank. Definitely a sly move to bail on the Cardinals when it was obvious they were in store for a plummet. Then sit out a year and take your pick. That Tampa Bay team was talented enough to defeat the top seeded Saints on the road and then own a double digit lead against New Orleans at home late in the season.

Adam Gase might not have realized that just because 7 other jobs are available, that doesn't mean all 7 will care about you. Now let's say cut that in half and all of a sudden we are down to 3 or 4 possibles, and you have to compete against multiple guys in all of those settings. I had friends in Las Vegas quit sportsbook supervisor jobs under assumption they would quickly be hired in the same role somewhere else. Nope.
