In the magazine's Insider section (Page 102), Legler writes, "it's been rumored they're targeting Rashard Lewis… It would have to be a sign-and-trade, but the Heat have some guys coming off the books who are attractive trade bait."

First, the logistics:

Lewis first has to opt out of $10 million for next season, as well as the $11 million he otherwise would be due in 2008-09.

In other words, he would want to start at at least $10 million per.

And no, contrary to the rumor, expiring contracts have no value in such a deal, since the Sonics otherwise could merely allow Lewis to depart and immediately recoup such cap and luxury-tax space.

And that's where this becomes practically unfathomable, certainly nothing that is going to draw a Pat Riley response.

Remember, in a sign-and-trade, the Sonics have to be willing to take back equivalent contracts. And exactly which $10 million from the Heat would they want?

Udonis Haslem? Perhaps, with his $6 million a workable figure.

Dorell Wright? That's another $2 million toward the $10 million total?

The Heat's upcoming first-round pick? Can't happen, since the draft comes before free-agency, unless the Heat drafts someone for Seattle at No. 20, which is not exactly viewed as kosher in such a situation.

James Posey? Jason Kapono? Again, those impending free agents would have to be signed-and-traded, further complicating a deal.

could be a possibility...but it sounds like we would have to give up a lot and give him a big contract...but hes a great player and would probably be worth it

yeh....but he isnt really that proven......what has he done? When's the last time the Sonics did anything?

I would love to have him, but it depends on what the offer is.

22.6 PPG average, 46% FG. That would take a huge load off Wade, especially when Shaq can't stay healthy.

Lewis would definitely be a good pickup for you guys. He quietly gets a lot done.

The Sonics already have Chris Wilcox and Nick Collison. What possible interest could they have in Udonis Haslem?

The problem the Heat are facing is that they need to get younger, but don't have any cap flexibility. Shaq's contract and Antoine Walker's contract are basically untradeable. And obviously, Dwyane Wade isn't going anywhere. Guess what, that's about $40M worth of salary tied up long term.

Haslem has a reasonable contract, but with Shaq working steadily towards a $1 million per game pace, and Mourning probably retiring, they can't afford to trade a competent big man unless they get one back. Lewis might be a fine fit for the Heat (cap issues aside), but they'd get killed on the boards, even in this era of smallball if they gave up Haslem for him (and again, I can't imagine the Sonics would want Haslem anyway). Simien and Wright could be interesting trade pieces, but they would need some salary cap ballast to go with them. Jason Williams has an expiring contract, which might make him attractive to someone...but probably not the Sonics, who already have Luke Ridnour and Earl Watson there.

Holy crap////I cant believe you left out Allen....thats a typo right? You cant leave out Jesus.:D

Allen's more name than game at this point, but he's still good. They've also got a good two-headed PG in Luke Ridnour and Earl Watson...albeit one pretty much devoid of defense. That, of course, rules out the other tradeable Heater, Jason Williams.

It bugs me when people come up with these trade possibilities without even a modest attempt at seeing if the other team would do it. "Hmmm...Haslem, Wright and cap filler for Lewis...well, it would leave the Sonics with three power forwards of pretty much identical skills for several more years...hey, why not?"

Udonis Haslem is probably the most likely to be gone next year. He's our best trading chip, along with J-Will's contract. If we are to acquire Rashard Lewis or Jason Kidd, then expect Haslem on the go. Shaq wants 'Shard, as he's said openly, and he's also good friends with Dwyane.

Haslem/J-Will/Dorell Wright would probably do the trick. That's a lot, but well worth it. Lewis is a scorer who can create his own shot. Miami needs to go over the tax - pay for success.

I'd look to make a deal like that, re-sign Posey, and split the MLE between a PG and PF.

You do realize that trade would mean that three of Seattle's best five players would play the same position, don't you? If there's a reason that the Sonics would actually do that, apart from an unexplained fetish for power forwards, I'm all ears.

Kidd makes more sense as a target. The Nets are dying for cap relief and would surely like to move Nenad Kristic to center full-time (when he gets healthy). Getting Haslem would allow them to do that, plus bring Mikki Moore off the bench as a high-energy backup at the 4 and 5. Haslem plus Williams plus Wright and a future #1 for Kidd would work under the cap and give Miami probably the NBA's best backcourt. Meanwhile, the Nets would get cap relief, start transitioning Marcus Williams to the full-time point guard job, and have a pretty good frontcourt of Jefferson-Haslem-Kristic, with Moore and Wright as the subs. So unlike the Rashard Lewis deal, this actually makes sense for the other team involved.

Of course, the downside is that Miami would be dangerously thin up front, especially when (not if) Shaq gets hurt. If they could talk Alonzo Mourning out of retiring, that would help.
