Rumor-Ville
In the magazine's Insider section (Page 102), Legler writes, "it's been rumored they're targeting Rashard Lewis… It would have to be a sign-and-trade, but the Heat have some guys coming off the books who are attractive trade bait."
First, the logistics:
Lewis first has to opt out of $10 million for next season, as well as the $11 million he otherwise would be due in 2008-09.
In other words, he would want to start at at least $10 million per.
And no, contrary to the rumor, expiring contracts have no value in such a deal, since the Sonics otherwise could merely allow Lewis to depart and immediately recoup such cap and luxury-tax space.
And that's where this becomes practically unfathomable, certainly nothing that is going to draw a Pat Riley response.
Remember, in a sign-and-trade, the Sonics have to be willing to take back equivalent contracts. And exactly which $10 million from the Heat would they want?
Udonis Haslem? Perhaps, with his $6 million a workable figure.
Dorell Wright? That's another $2 million toward the $10 million total?
The Heat's upcoming first-round pick? Can't happen, since the draft comes before free-agency, unless the Heat drafts someone for Seattle at No. 20, which is not exactly viewed as kosher in such a situation.
James Posey? Jason Kapono? Again, those impending free agents would have to be signed-and-traded, further complicating a deal.
