• Center -- Earl Barron, Heat: Who knew a Miami Heat center could actually shoot 88.7 percent from the foul line? Maybe the 7-foot, 245-pound Barron's first assignment upon getting back to South Florida should be to work with Shaq at the charity stripe. Barron gave the rest of the league a look at why the Heat are so high on him with several impressive showings. Miami already knew he had the ability to bury 15-foot jumpers in pick-and-pop plays, but the mild-mannered Barron also displayed some grit on the low block this week.

After Barron averaged 22 points and 7.2 rebounds, it's a near certainty the Heat will pick up the option on his contract and have him in camp in October. And if Alonzo Mourning leaves the Heat via free agency or retirement, don't be surprised to see Barron playing big minutes alongside of Shaq come next season.

Great news for Heat fans. Here's a little on Dorrell Wright.

Maybe the Heat's future cupboard is not so bare after all. Earl Barron, a 24-year-old center who has played in Turkey, the Philippines and Huntsville, Ala., seems to be blossoming. He averaged 24 points and eight rebounds in four games in Orlando, shooting 52 percent (and, blessedly, hit 87.8 percent on free throws). Small forward Dorrell Wright, drafted out of high school in 2004, is averaging 17 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.8 steals. Dwyane Wade, take note.

Based on our lack of acquisitions in FA, it seems we're going to live and die by how well our young guys like Dorrell play. Good to see thet're doing well.

From the Herald:
One veteran NBA scout who watched the Heat's summer-league team last week said swingman Dorell Wright (15.2 points per game) ''surprised me and stood out. His ability to make plays was impressive. He's a big-time talent. He just needs to play.'' (One concern: Wright had 19 turnovers, 17 assists in five games).

Center Earl Barron (22.0 ppg) ''can shoot and was active, but he's not that good an athlete. He's not super quick,'' the scout said, adding nobody else impressed him except ex-University of Minnesota shooting guard Vincent Grier, whom he deemed a long shot.
