MACOMB, Ill. - Fourteen NFL teams were represented at Western Illinois’ pro scout day Tuesday as 12 former Leathernecks worked out in Western Hall.

After being measured and weighed, then tested in the 225-pound bench press, players moved to the gym floor for the 40-yard dash, broad jump, vertical jump, three-cone drill and the 20-yard shuttle.

In the bench press, during which scouts are measuring endurance in addition to strength, running back Herb Donaldson posted 28 repetitions - the highest number of the day.

Linebacker Jason Williams posted the day’s best results in both the 40 and the vertical jump. His time of 4.49 seconds was .07 seconds faster than the quickest linebacker invited to last month’s NFL combine, and would have placed second among all cornerbacks and third among the safeties. His vertical jump of 39 inches was two inches better than any of the combine’s linebackers. Williams put up 26 repetitions in the bench press.

Donaldson and Williams are the Leathernecks receiving the most attention from scouts leading up to the April 25-26 NFL Draft. Both of them received short individual workouts on Hanson Field at the conclusion indoor drills.

“From a coaches’ standpoint, I was very proud of how our draft-eligible players represented their team,” said Western Illinois head coach Don Patterson. “They have prepared long and hard for this and I am really proud of how they performed as a group. Herb really helped himself today. He showed that he could catch the ball really well outside. And Jason proved to the scouts why he was the best all-around athlete on our team.”

The Leathernecks have a storied tradition of sending players to the NFL, as six former Leathernecks are currently in the professional ranks and six of the last eight Super Bowl champions have included Western Illinois alumni.

NFL teams in attendance today were the Buccaneers, Browns, Chiefs, Colts, Dolphins, Eagles, Falcons, 49ers, Packers, Panthers, Patriots, Rams, Titans and Vikings.

I have been saying for a while now that Herb Donaldson is going to be a steal in this draft. He was in my mock back on 1/21.

I like the looks of those 2 guys.

News** *03/04/09* - Every year there are a host of players who complain about not getting an invite to the scouting combine. Western Illinois linebacker Jason Williams, the DuSable product, is one who can make a very good case this year. But he did something about it when his opportunity came Tuesday at his pro day in Macomb, Ill. With 14 teams in attendance, according to one source, Williams was clocked as fast as 4.46 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Now, the problem with the time is it was run on a basketball court. But if you add one-tenth of a second to compensate, or even a fraction more, you're talking about a linebacker running a sub 4.6 time in the 40. That would have put him in very good company at the combine with other outside linebackers, and there is little doubt Williams will be drafted. Williams is just over 6-1 and weighed 238 pounds. He also excelled in other areas, putting up 26 reps at 225 pounds on the bench. His vertical jump was 39 inches and his broad jump was 10-9. he's not done yet either. Williams, who had 14 career forced fumbles for the Leathernecks and stood out during the week at the East-West Shrine Game, plans to attend the Northwestern pro day March 12 and work out there as well for teams that may have missed him. It ought to give him another shot to run the 40 on a better surface too. Williams was a finalist this year for the 2008 Buck Buchanan Award. - Brad Biggs, The Chicago Sun-Times

If the Dolphins draft Williams, he will probably be looked at as a Bart Scott-type of player. An ILB who can at times play outside in certain situations.

Scouts came from far and wide to Northwestern's pro day Thursday for a main attraction who came from 250 miles away.
Western Illinois linebacker Jason Williams, a DuSable graduate, was the player most of the 17 NFL teams present wanted to see, and he didn't disappoint. The 238-pounder ran the 40-yard dash between 4.42 and 4.48 seconds, besting the numbers he put up last week at his school.

(AP) Williams -- who wasn't invited to the scouting combine last month -- was worked out by Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers coach Joe Barry and will have a future visit with the Bucs. He also has meetings lined up with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins and has talked several times with Bears Midwest scout Jeff Shiver.

''I felt like I got snubbed by the combine, but I've learned throughout my life that everything works out in the end,'' Williams said. ''I still ended up posting better numbers than all the linebackers [at the combine] when it came time to showcase myself.''
Williams is projected to be drafted in the middle rounds, and his stock has risen since a strong performance in the East-West Shrine Game. When he's not visiting teams, he'll be in Macomb finishing his degree in exercise science.
''I made a promise to myself and my mom [Karen] that I was going to get my degree before I left,'' he said. ''Plus, I only have eight hours left to graduate. I might as well finish now.''

At 6'3 225 pounds and demonstrating the great speed he did this could be this years Demarcus Ware.
