The logic behind Saban's decision is probably based on four primary factors:

1. He's being offered a heckuva lot of money to join Alabama. This despite the fact that his results in Miami have been iffy the last couple of years. Both of his Dolphins teams have started slow and effectively ruined their season by the midway point. What happened after that is just a nice story, but it doesn't mean anything right now.

2. He's very much in danger of having another bad season in Miami next year. The Dolphins are not going to get a top 5 pick and an instant bailout the way that the Jets and Saints did this year. If he has another bad season his ability to command a very strong offer from a fabled program like Alabama will diminish substantially.

3. The Dolphins are about to go into total rebuild mode. The defensive front 7 is very strong and with the exception of Channing Crowder it's also either over the hill or on the peak waiting to start down. No other unit on the team with the possible exception of the runningbacks is above NFL average right now and aging is not confined to the defensive front 7, the offensive line is also looking very 29-30ish.

4. The Dolphins still have no QB they can count on moving forward at this point. Daunte Culpepper may or may not be able to come back and play at an acceptable level. He almost certainly is not going to be playing at his peak level of 3 years ago even if he can play. QB is the most important position on an NFL roster and the Dolphins don't have one.

Everything considered the odds are very strong that the Dolphins are going to be a bad place to have on your resume from 2007-2009. Saban absolutely has to take the Alabama offer or he's going to be gambling heavily with his professional reputation and future career choices. Alabama will cause a minor hit now to his rep, but the Dolphins over the next 3 years could get him absolutely obliterated.

I don't think he is leaving, but if he is entertaining the idea I bet one of his primary reasons is that he is sick of the absolute bull**** the media and uneducated fans throw in to his face every day.

I'm betting that the main reason he is entertaining the offer is that he does not understand what has gone wrong so far in Miami.

He's been very successful everywhere else he has been and so far there's no magic in Miami. The lure of the college game, where he believes he is guaranteed to do well right off the bat, must be extraordinarily strong for him right now.

Looks like WalMart is selling Magic 8 Balls again

My magic 8 ball usually works pretty well:

I missed out on the Jets winning 9 or 10 games mainly because I did not believe Chad was going to be healthy.

I was dead on on the Fins, Culpepper and Saban though.

Your first prediction was horrible. You said that the Dolphins front 7 was going to have a "huge" dropoff this year. WRONG. They had the best year they have had in the last 6 years. Defense is ranked #3 in the NFL.

Your other predicion is just a Jet Homer predicition.

Weak.

Agree 100%.

I thought Saban was outta here as soon as Rich Rodriguez turned down the job and it'd been a few days before we'd heard anything about a new candidate. Now it's been a couple weeks and we still haven't heard anything.

However, that's just one part of the equation. The more important ones are the ones you mentioned.

I really hope he doesnt leave... I really think he's still the future of this team... lets not forget the mess that he inherited...

But at the same time... I really do think he very well may leave. If he "misses" coaching college kids,... and helping develop them... and Alabama is going to throw that much money, and he can avoid all the scrutiny he's received since arriving here in Miami... why not? you still get to to what you love... and thats coach football, with the added bonus theyre young players(cuz thats apparently what nick likes)... and less media attention. Its a win-win for him apparently. Thats the ever-growing media based NFL at its "best" again...

So bottom line, I dont want him to go, but... in a way I can understand if he does. its not quitting, or giving up. its going back to a normal state of life. not the media circus that is the NFL.

Coach Nick can't leave us! What will we do if he's...gone? He's taught us more about coaching in 2 years than the rest of them combined! He just can't go and that's it! We need to, as Dolfans, make up the difference between the 57 million from Alabama and the 22 million he's getting now! It's only 35 million! Let's let Nick finish what he started, he's a defensive genius, he loves to teach, he's specialty is the secondary. Look what he's done with Jason Allen and we still have one game left!
