I know this is a labor agreement issues

But placing a better or cheaper rookies salary cap
and not reducing the team salary cap ..

Will allow more vet. players to sign bigger contract with more
guaranteed money ...
Let get real here ,The NFL is the number 1 sport in the states.
and the players are getting robbed..even in this economy
..

Baseball ,and Basketball players are payed a lot more with guaranteed contract up front. (Mark Blount for the Miami Heat is making 7 million a year)
yes these sports are international but the gap is
just to larger to ignore..

Now on to the team with number 1 overall draft choice....
Here a losing team ,1-15 or 0-16 team like(Dolphins of last year,Lion of this year)
and your going to receive the number one overall pick..
but you have to sign player X to 60-70 million(qb )
All basic on his College career....

/22/2008: Signed a five-year, $57.75 million contract. The deal includes $30 million guaranteed. Year six voided based on rookie-year playing time (Long started all 16 games). 2009: $3.75 million, 2010: $4.5 million, 2011: $5.25 million, 2012: $6 million, 2013: $6.75 million (Voided Year), 2014: Free Agent

Was Long worth it yes and no......
Long become one the top paid OT in the league
b4 he ever suit up and prove he's worth it..
It also increase the Franchise tag for other teams
If a team want to Franchise there OT on there team..

Long had a pro-bowl season ,but i like to see proof
b4 Jake long receive such a larger contract..
For playing college football...

Don't get me wrong I luv Long......as our LT

ps i know Blount contract is what's wrong with the NBA
I would not suggest guaranteeing the whole contract.
For Vet. Players

A rookie salary cap would also open the door for more wheeling and dealing on draft day. Teams will no longer dread having a Top 5-6 pick because of the money commitment and if a team wanted a certain player, they could trade up without having to break the bank in order to pay for said player.

I fully agree, the drafting of "ROOKIE" players and playing them the same or sometime more than the best vereran player at that position is just stupid. A rookie cap needs to be put in place, something like round one players are capped at 25 million max 2nd round at 10 million max and on down the line. have the contracts for only 2 years max. That way it gives the player enough time to prove to his team and others in the NFL he is a elite player and deserves to be paid as one of the top players at his position.

i agree 100 percent, there is no way that a kid fresh outta college should get 50-60 mil etc. There needs to be a limit, and the money can get spent on players whos been in the league and have proven there worth. It does put a damper on teams with the top 5 or so picks cause non of them want to fork over that silly amount of money for a player that they are unsure of amounting to anything, its unfair if you ask me.

Damn so now
Jake Long is only signed to a 5 year deal.

His last year (6th year)being void b/c of playing time.....

Thats why you see so few teams wanting to trade up to the top 4 picks, cost them way too much to do so for 1 player that could be great or could be a huge bust....

2 years is not enough time for most rookies to prove that he can be an elite player. For example, most receivers take 3 years to adjust to the NFL before they begin to understand what is going on in the NFL. This is one of the primary reason most teams want to sign their rookies to atleast a 4-5 year contract because that is when the begin to come into their own as a player.

I don't think the commish can just change it, that would happen with bargaining on th CBA but I guarantee that its going to happen. Teams are tired of paying Rookies so much and them being busts. It keeps bad teams done for a long time. Pay the guys who have proven they can play not the guys coming in. I think this will get passed very quickly by al the players as well. More money for them signing as FAs.

Players contracts are not guaranteed. Because of that, there will never be a cap. This might be their only time to get money, so they will be looking for as big of deal as they can.

There is definately something wrong with the salary structure in the NFL. I dont have much hope that the commish will push for this anytime soon.
