How did your franchise receive it's name. I know in Miami it was voted on.
Wikipedia:
A dozen finalists were screened through by a seven-member committee made up of the local media, names considered included the Mariners, Marauders, Mustangs, Missiles, Moons, Sharks, and Suns. The winning name, "Dolphins," was submitted by 622 entrants. Mrs. Roberta Swanson of West Miami won lifetime passes to Dolphin games when her nickname entry successfully predicted the winner and score of the 1965 football game between Notre Dame and the University of Miami, a scoreless tie.
Moons? :shakeno: Thank god!

After Werblin and Hess took over the club, the team was renamed the New York Jets because of their planned relocation from the Polo Grounds to the New York Mets' Shea Stadium one year later. Shea Stadium lies so close to LaGuardia Airport that the sound of jets roaring overhead was a common sound heard during games played there. The team's colors were also changed from blue and gold to kelly green and white, which also were the colors of Hess's gasoline stations.

I think the Miami Marauders would have been better then being named after a fish.

I believe it had to do w/ laguardia Airport being so close to Shea. originally we were the Titans but changed in 1963 to the Jets b/c we were moving to Shea.

Franchise history

The Jets began as the New York Titans, a charter member of the American Football League in 1960. "Titans" was intended to be a play on "Giants", New York's highly successful NFL franchise. Playing its home games at the Polo Grounds, the team's attendance was minimal, despite fielding respectable teams that finished .500 (7–7) during their first two seasons. However, after a 5–9 season in 1962, the team's future was in doubt. The team was then saved from bankruptcy by a group headed by MCA head Sonny Werblin and Leon Hess, who bought the team from Harry Wismer on March 15, 1963.
