Anthony Johnson choosing to forego his senior season at LSU and enter the 2014 NFL Draft seemed an easy decision; Preseason All-America defensive tackle, glowing draft projections, man of the family, father to a young daughter.
On those three days in May, he watched name after name get called — 256 in total — and his wasn’t one of them.
Waiting and hoping for a team to offer a free agent contract after the draft isn’t an uncommon experience for NFL hopefuls, though the ways college prospects end up in a heap vying for limited spots vary by the individual.
However, once camps open, making the 53-man roster is no less achievable for undrafted free agents, as Johnson, going into his second season with the Dolphins, and many others around the league have proved. This year, teams have until Sept. 1 to cut rosters to 75 players and get down to the final 53 by Sept. 5.
“Our philosophy is, once you get here, whether you are an unrestricted free agent or whether you’ve already been on the roster, whether you are a draft pick or whether you are an undrafted player, we are going to judge you based on merit and what you do here,” Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey told Sporting News. “Once they are here, we have competitive environments and you just compete, and that’s how we come to our decisions.”
