Anthony Johnson choosing to forego his senior season at LSU and enter the 2014 NFL Draft seemed an easy decision; Preseason All-America defensive tackle, glowing draft projections, man of the family, father to a young daughter.

On those three days in May, he watched name after name get called — 256 in total — and his wasn’t one of them.

Waiting and hoping for a team to offer a free agent contract after the draft isn’t an uncommon experience for NFL hopefuls, though the ways college prospects end up in a heap vying for limited spots vary by the individual.

However, once camps open, making the 53-man roster is no less achievable for undrafted free agents, as Johnson, going into his second season with the Dolphins, and many others around the league have proved. This year, teams have until Sept. 1 to cut rosters to 75 players and get down to the final 53 by Sept. 5.

“Our philosophy is, once you get here, whether you are an unrestricted free agent or whether you’ve already been on the roster, whether you are a draft pick or whether you are an undrafted player, we are going to judge you based on merit and what you do here,” Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey told Sporting News. “Once they are here, we have competitive environments and you just compete, and that’s how we come to our decisions.”

As opposed to, "we drafted you, so you gotta play out your rookie contract so we save face."

I'm sooo ****ing glad we have a competent General Manager and Staff now...

If anthony johnson doesnt play better than he did in the preseason opener unwanted he will be

If it was "merit-based", then Jordan sure as hell shouldn't have been seeing the field more than McCain last year!

Man, Ireland refuses to give up.

Had philbins staff not cut Roberto Wallace who knows how many years we would of spent "developing" him.

"don't worry bro, trade stills for Ellerbe, I scouted Ellerbe myself when I was in miami, it's all good, I gonna build you a power running game like you never seen before, get me more draft picks too, brees doesn't need Jimmy Graham, I'll replace him with this Egnew kid dude, 1st rnd pick, a standford left tackle, what could go wrong, don't worry brah, Ireland is on top of this, where Phillip wheeler?"

Think what Hickey was trying to say is everyone that makes it here starts with a clean slate and is judged on their present performance.

I don't think you need to literally take his statement and make it a law that is set in stone that doesn't have the ability to adjust but rather a general statement expressing the fact that everyone has a shot. (this is not politics)

Of course the #1 ,#2 picks due to there impressive history come in with a advantage, and are given more leeway than a low rd or a UDFA which is just common sense, but if a guy comes in, out plays and shows superior ability than the top picks whether a low rdr a UDFA, or just some slurpie that worked at 7-11, he will not only be on the team but probably a starter.......

Jordan is a glitch that doesn't happen very often. You see a guy with unbelievable talent and of course he's going to get extra opportunities to succeed and how well and fast these guys are evaluated is a huge aspect needed to be a successful GM, and HC...and I think we finally have one....or two

if what Hickey says is true why is jordan is still on team . Its damn sure not merit

This has been covered...it's better cap-wise for Miami to keep him right now. Certainly if he did something awful to give the org a black eye, he'd be cut, but he's not worth cutting out of principle at the moment.
