The word is the Pats won't franchise him, so here is a chance he hits the market. I can't Imagine them letting him walk while they have 60 million in cap room, but he isn't signed yet. If we were going to break the bank this off season I think this is the guy I would be all in on. Top 3 MLB and that happens to be our biggest need.

they let two linebackers go but kept him. they will get this deal done

We need a MLB but how is it our biggest need?

Yes, let's severely overpay for a MLB who will be over valued simply because he plays for the Pats. We damage our cap stucture and give the Pats a high comp pick next yr.

He'd be bored as **** on our defense coming from the Patriots' system.

Did you see our LB last season? McCoy and Bell really showed us that LB is our biggest need, as well as Kapernick, Tyron Taylor, Demarco Murray, etc etc. We have Kiko and a gaggle of undrafted special teams players pretending to be LBs. With Kiko moving to the weak side LB it looks as MLB is most likely our biggest need.

I thought Hightower was a 3-4 LB. How easy is that to switch to a 4-3 system?

I wouldn't sign him, I live in Massachusetts and very few times does a player leave New England and excell. I'd go heavy on defense in the draft

I agree but also, if the Pats let him go, they're gonna get that comp pick regardless. The Browns love NE players. He's a good player but I wouldn't break the bank for him. We've seen mediocre players become good in NE and we've seen NE players become mediocre after they left. Its coaching. Plain and simple.

Hightower was interchangeable along the front 7 just like all Patriots defenders are asked to do, but played mostly MLB in a 3-3/5-1 Front.

if he wasnt going to get paid the most out of the FA MLBs out there Id say yeah but he will be too much $...plus he does have a leg injury history and played 16 games once in his career...I would rather draft a MLB or sign someone a little cheaper like Gerald Hodges , not sure if Zach Brown is a fit in our 4-3 and Perry Riley is worth a look but pretty thin FA market this year

Classic scheme over talent decision

One which in the pats case i totally agree with...the scheme is the driving force in that d now and being able to identify personell that fit it

I agree with you. He would be great at a reasonable price, but I wouldn't break the bank for him. In all likelihood, some other team will.
The Pats end up fleecing everyone regardless if its via trade, comp picks etc. The Phins have to be smart if they want to compete in the AFC East.

Your argument is based on the false premise that only a guy like Hightower can improve the Phins defense. No one has argued that the LB position is a weakness. The argument is which is the best way to upgrade the unit.
Overpaying for an over valued Pats player isn't the answer IMHO.
