The 2027 money is inconsequential as the Dolphins will likely have more cap space than they can spend, even if they post June 1 Tua.I posted this in another thread, but another final gift from Grier is that we have $40m in dead cap in 2027 just from the void years he tacked onto other contracts. Sully is biting the bullet though, these are the moves that had to be done to undo the damage.
This was always the plan. Grier built a roster and gave it a 3 year window, the plan was always to reset in 2026 if it didn’t work out. The one move they probably didn’t plan on was moving off of Tua in 2026, I’d bet the plan was to restructure his base salary this year to a bonus to give them the cap room to start rebuilding this season or move away from him in 2027.
Obviously it all went to crap with Grier’s crap drafting the last few years leaving the team with no depth and his penchant for signing injured guys biting him in the ass. The one good thing we can say about Grier is that he didn’t try to extend the window and he even traded away a pick last season with an eye on the future instead of going all out to save his job. He could have been aggressive in 2024 and 2025 free agency by pushing cap hits out into 2028 and 2029 like the Eagles but never did.
