I think a lot of fans forget that the cupboard was bare when Tuna, Ireland, and Sparano took over the team. In two years, they have managed to completely change the culture of the franchise. The new owner has also taken a step in the right direction to make Landshark Stadium a a great fan experience.
They've had two offseasons, and while some of the holes have been addressed, a lot of work remains.
1. It is obvious to everyone that the Dolphins have no #1 receiver. We need a guy that teams must account for when he steps on the field. We need a guy that scares people. We haven't had a guy in this mold since Duper and Clayton. Marino always made his receivers look better than they were, and no coach or GM since has found one.
2. Why is it that teams with good TE seem to always have an advantage over our defense? It's a consistent symptom of the need for a playmaker at MLB and one or maybe even two new safeties. Defense is built up the middle. Crowder, Ayodele, Bell, and Wilson aren't getting the job done in the passing game. They're good thumpers in the running game, and that's what Parcells initially wanted. However, none of these guys seem to have the athleticism to stay with TEs or RBs in the passing game. At safety, it might be time to look at Culver and Clemons. I don't believe we have a MLB on the roster that can be the future of the position. We need to draft one immediately.
3. Joey Porter and Jason Taylor are old. Are the heir apparents on the roster right now? Not sure. I do know that this seems to be a position that's always loaded in the draft. Wake might be one piece.
4. The defensive line needs reinforcements. Is Solai the answer behind Ferguson? Do we have anyone behind Merling, Langford, and Starks?
Bottomline, this team still has a lot of holes that need to be addressed. It will be at least two more offseasons before this regime can fill all the holes.
