I just got done with a bunch of Brandon Albert tape in kc from 2013 and I have to say I feel more confident about the left tackle being shored up after...what stands out above everything else is the lateral quickness and agility at the Los...he gets off the ball very well but it's the lateral fluidity and quickness for such a massive man that is the trait to rely on...

He flows laterally down the Los when engaged very well in the outside run game not a physical mauler but he seals the edge well cause he can match the lateral athleticism and quickness of even undersized des he faces and is too laterally quick for the jumbos and more straight linish ones...wide stretch may well be in play...should absolutely help a Lamar miller for instance gain the corner...

I definitely undersold the move athlete he gets to the 2nd level well he's just not all that great at putting himself in position to make solid sustained contact can take poor angles or reach outside his frame with his hands and while effective it's not ideal...looks a little complacent to just get there vs put himself in ideal position...

Shows the ability to when he oversets open his hips turn and recover with quick footwork and those massive arms to at least rarely give a guy a clean release to the qb and in many instances push the rusher right by the qb...

Shows good awareness at the Los fires out well from the inside when covered to meet edge rushers and clean release blitzers and does not blow many sight adjustment calls...

Kick slide and foot quickness are definitely pluses...looks a little upright at times but I think he can get away with it cause he's such a good lateral athlete...effective punch adept at mirroring rushers again with that lateral agility and quickness and does a good job of locking out and keeping rushers within the frame work of his body...rarely on the ground...

Totally different level lateral quickness and athlete than Bryant McKinnie for us last year who pretty much only had plus feet to rely on and massive size plus arms to work with at this point

Fires off the ball well enough and is a good enough move athlete that I think he can be effective in space in the screen game even if I doubt he will make much sustained contact in that roll

Shows the ability to anchor against power rushes and lock out...rarely walked back into the backfield...more susceptible to over setting than anything else...

I Had concerns about fall off and after studying the tape I didn't really see any red flags in that regard...

Thanks for the great analysis as always. We have good players at LT and C but I just hope the rest of the line can get the job done.

This is good to hear.

Thanks for the work and write up.

Thanks for your thorough analysis. However, Hoops you seem surprised by Albert's fluidity and lateral agility. This is why he was rated the top available OT in free agency and why he earns the top $. It further confirms why Joe Philbin wanted him here a year ago and Ireland wouldn't give up the Draft pick because he believed J-Mart could handle the LT position.
Because of that single pig-headed decision we had the whole bullying scandal that ultimately cost Ireland, Sherman and Turner's jobs as well as the Head Trainer's and led to all the O-line player changes. I am comfortable with a lot of the moves and especially Ireland's departure. But it is rare that such a decision would lead to such a chain of events. It is ironic that the player Philbin wanted a year ago is now here. You know that Joe wants him to succeed badly.

Good point, Spike. I will admit I was personally really interested in Eugene Monroe for awhile, even as a trade option from Jacksonville. But I think Philbin and the brass identified Albert's skill set so he was the guy they recruited. Albert's post-signing interviews were full of references to how Miami told him he was their guy. I realize we are talking money here, but the money reflects Miami's desire to get him in here and they had Albert at "hello."

Hopefully this will play out that Albert proves to be the superior investment over Monroe. I liked Monroe from an age and durability standpoint, but Miami clearly likes Albert's skill set. Or else Monroe would have been the bigger priority.

Hoops on the reports of RT getting sacked and pressure during the end of training camp numerous times on Alberts side giving up as many potential sacks in a game as he did all year. So why is my question did that happen,
Spike good points BUT Albert has made it through one out of six seasons healthy plus there was a draft pick involved 1st or at least a 2nd rounder last year to acquire his services. If I were GM last year and was going to give away a draft pick plus have to spend the type of money on what we spent on signing Albert this year I would have been inclined resigning Jake Long injuries and all.
Did not Albert play right tackle last year his contract year when he stayed healthy?
I am waiting until the end of the year on judging this move. I want to see a healthy motivated Albert shutting down that left side before passing judgement on anyone.

I'm glad to hear you think he's decent in the running game. That was the only real concern anybody had about his game. Hopefully the rookie can hold down the right tackle. It is far better to have weak guards then weak tackles. Compared to last year we did a 180 in that regard

Hoops, do you think he is underrated as a run blocker? If we need some tough yards in the run game, can we run behind him? I don't get the sense he is just a finesse athlete as a pass blocker. He may be well rounded.

I just read Shelley Smith is a possibility at center? Any basis to that, how would he do at center?

i think what it was for me more than anything is i was surprised by the lateral agility level athlete given the advanced age...in other words i didn't expect to see that level lateral player...and frankly when a guy plays a little upright to me which albert does i think it's the reason he has been able to play at such a level and more importantly til i see a slower lateral guy and a guy who can't overcome angles which albert shows he can i feel comfortable about his short term future with our team and us not getting hozed on that contract at this point...when he does start to show signs of losing lateral quickness and becomes more easy to expose as a result of his relatively upright style i would absolutely kick him inside to left guard where he would still be an above average move and foot athlete for the position...at that point you make him a phone booth player...will that be 3 years or more from now i don't know but there aren't any signs at this point

when he does fall off you can bet it will be the lateral athletism more than anything that caused it...

How can you bash Albert for his injuries than advocate the resigning of Long? That makes no sense.

Albert played LT and the #1 pick overall played RT.

Great run down, thanks. I saw where Albert played very well on the run before the injury problems with his back. Did you notice that having an affect on his run blocking?

I guess you missed the the part about draft picks, that was the problem.
Big contract, injury issues, and a 1st or 2nd pick.
