i will start by saying i was pretty happy with what i saw...we got a better football team this year there's no doubt in my mind...with that let's dive right in

offensive gameplan i mean it's just way better than anything we have seen since i can recall...holding the lbs with the action in the backfield in breaking slot routes over the nosy lbs and in front of the safeties for easy pitch and catch...all the qb movement the motion with multiple tight ends and wrs late etc this teams gonna score some damn points i have no doubts...it looks dare i say intuitive with the formations the play calls i mean across the board...hot freaking damn...ok enough of that even though it's a massive big deal let's get to some actual player evaluations

i don't think i could be more happy with the play of the right tackle in pass pro...jawaun james is killing it thru 2 games...even when he gets bull rushed and he's on his heels and i feel like he's gonna be walked back to the qb as a result he finds a way to recover and lock out and at least give the qb some extra time...not one time have i seen him run over in pass pro...his technique looks excellent...holy cow what an upgrade pass pro is at right tackle right now...in the run game it needs a lot of work and time to get stronger...you can't run a lot of that delayed wide action if the right tackle is losing early and getting walked back into the backfield...miami needs to curb some of those calls come playing for keeps and i expect a real oc to do just that...

dallas thomas got smoked all game basically mccoy was a one man wrecking crew...thomas loses early a lot on a play it's a bad trait he oversets or gets his hands washed out and is off balance...that said mccoy is a animal dt i would expect when we start gameplanning for the opposition if one guys ruining things for us for there to be some help given and not as much one on one with a glaring mismatch...so while i don't like what i saw it's not as big a deal to me as it may be for some others cause with what i see from the tackles in pass pro especially i think we can provide more help to thomas if need be...he gets stood up a lot though hell he gets stood up by lbs at the 2nd level even...i like the effort and i do like the meat on the bone though potential still...he's got some things to work with although i don't know if his body could be any better and so it's gonna have to be from a technique stand point...the effort is there for sure

darren colledge looks a little lost in space...pulls on a run play lets a db go right inside of him for a tackle for loss...i need better awareness than that...he must be expecting the rb to be wider by then i guess but good grief plant that cat in the turf...

overall i like the 2 deep oline honestly...i feel like this team finally has quality scheme fits i like the awareness up front i like the way the guys have worked as a unit against stunts and passed off/picked up guys...the run game needs work no doubt use more misdirection which i fully expect come regular season and more hard lateral movement this teams not gonna right now win a lot of one on one trenches type battles but we can do some things with the scheme and the play design and tempo to keep teams on their heels...

lamar miller i need more vision...hard lateral action the backers get caught up inside he's got a massive cut back lane to the weakside after the blitzing slot defender comes up field to the qb and he instead puts his head down and takes the 3 yards the defense gives...jump cut that sucker back to the weakside like arian foster has made a living doing and you are downhill and 20 yards untouched...vision is key in a zone scheme i need more of it

top 5 wrs should be locked up right now...wallace hartline gibson landry mathews...done and done...landry showing nice toughness on contact he'll murder people down the middle of the field on those in cuts on the delayed action in the backfield when the lbs step up...murder them...gibson looks to be getting back to his old form i see more vertical routes with the wrs and less horizontal this year miami is gonna take their shots...expect chunk yardage with the scheme and playcalling...

damian williams is probably the front runner if they keep a 6th wr and i'd probably say he's earning it with his play but i still havent seen how he will fare against press and i do see a guy that doesn't show much burst or separation out of his cuts...and on those slant routes better watch for dbs driving on things from off coverage with the way he comes out of his breaks...

binns caught a screen showed a nice burst with the ball...other than that though not much...

kevin cone has some redeeming qualities that make for a p squad slot but nothing that warrants 53 man roster right now...

dion sims is definitely a better player this year...more polished with his route running gets off the los better all around a better football player...gonna be a key guy for us this year...may be someone we can depend on in the red zone off all the great play calls i expect...soft hands developing nicely...

ryan tannehill i mean athletically this new scheme fits him to a t if he gets the kind of pass pro he's enjoyed thus far watch out nfl...the qbs legit...on the sack fumble i mean yeah i'd like to see him hold onto that ball but the playcall calls for the pump fake to one side come back to the other and after he pulled that action off with how quickly mccoy was in the backfield he was a sitting duck...whatever...just gonna have to be careful not to get too cute with the calls when a guys wrecking you and you can't find ways to limit him with the gameplan...

i still don't see much depth wise at rb...i see a lot more quality depth rbs on other teams rosters...they all look run of the mill to me...this unit needs knowshon moreno

billy turner is eventually gonna win a starting job...he's not ready for a mccoy level guy but he's a superior talent and athlete than anything else in our 2 deep...once he learns technique and leverage he's gonna be hell on wheels...he does a lot of things movement wise with absolute ease and he's got some finish and toughness to him...great traits to have

the brackett kid at tight end is a long strider that has me intrigued he gets on top of people quickly and he's showing some toughness and solid hands...a little more polished than i expected too...you could get some scheme driven production out of that...it's raw but it's got some talent...by the way i think if i was looking to another teams cuts for a tight end tampa may be where i go...i see some quality depth there...something could shake free...but we aren't the only ones that are looking that's for sure...

i guess i will close with this on the offense...mike wallace gets thrown off his preferred gate more than i care to see...his speed is so rediculous that if he gets held up or impeded for even a nanosecond a properly thrown ball is overthrown...i'm not making excuses i'm just saying you added 8 lbs put those 8 lbs to use and get guys off your body...mike wallace is in for a big year in this offense...that's very obvious...if he stays healthy and we don't get double digit tds from him i will be floored...

oh and matt moore sold me with his value in this one...miamis gonna play it more traditional pocket if he plays and they are gonna scrap alot of that athleticism stuff with the qb but bill lazors offense is sound enough where matt moore could in a pinch give us a good shot at winning...(unless the eagles cut matt barkley lmao...then all bets are off)

on defense i love the front 4...hell i love the 2 deep rotation up front...vernon to me looks like a more polished well rounded player this year i love the effort and the motor the pass rush has developed to where i feel like he's a year in year out double digit sack performer...i just see more consistency as a player...

derrick shelby does look like he has a bit more ability to close this year...a little more burst...and for him that's a big damn deal...

dion jordan though still not showing any rush arsenal one play really stood out...jams a tight end and drops to cover him the guy puts his foot in thr ground and cuts laterally dj is practically falling all over himself on the cut and off balance sloppy...if there's not a better example of this weight gain killing the athlete i sure as hell don't know where it is...the kid i saw last year and at the combine would have made that lateral cut on a freaking dime and exploded to the sideline...miamis made this kid a shell of the athlete he used to be...no where near a top pick level athlete any more...that play should be all this team needs to tell him to drop some weight while he's on suspension and get some of the athleticism and burst back...miami doesn't need another plugger de they need a difference maker on the edge in the sub package when they kick vernon inside...it's not gonna happen at this weight against starting tackles...

at lb koa misi showed better inside run game play...seemed to see it a tick faster and attack...no doubt more reps are helping there...but teams are gonna lick their lips to get him in space and attack it with misdirection and play action...and take advantage of the aggressiveness...anyways the inside the hash marks run d play was noticeably better

philip wheeler clean overload blitz opportunity got the offense in exactly what we want for some reason jumps in the air against mccown a marginal athlete to begin with and almost grabs the freaking face mask as he flails by lucky for us he got nothing or the drive extender as i now call him strikes again...i can't wait to cut that guy...he plays so dumb it makes me numb...

jordan tripp i saw him play weak i saw him play mike i saw him play strong and i was happy with his play in all 3...that's an ascending football player for sure...shows good awareness and he communicates well...not sure about the physicality yet but he shows up in specials also...

chris mccain looks great in space where he can run things down and attack...i like the click and close on the backside and i really like the athlete...the sift thru trash and take on needs a lot of work...by far best when clean and he can attack...

i think it's time for miami to part ways with trusnick and freeny...different level athletes and upside potential as players with the young kids and i see versatility enough where each are replaceable...plus the kids can play some solid specials...move on miami

brent grimes gave up some scheme driven production plays...some of those coverages called i mean with the db leverage you are giving up in cutters...i'm not worried about it...he drove on the ball and route well from way off even and pretty much arrived with the ball...i expect us to play it a little closer come playing for keeps with our top corner...nice effort on the forced fumble at the goalline...all out could have loafed and no one would have said a thing...

will davis got first team nickle run and i thought he showed well...i liked the more active hand use he shows now and the awareness and ball skills are excellent...saw a more willing tackler and while i don't think it will ever be a strong suit i saw enough from the effort aspect in that regard and willingness...davis is another improving football player...if he gets first team nickel run come the regualr season though i hope he's assignment sound...i love a playmaker as much as anyone but if you don't have over the top help play it smart...cause teams are gonna try and get after you being so aggressive with double moves...just be smart about it...he shows like a heady football player this year i don't want to lose the aggressiveness which is a big part of what you like just be smart...handle your assignments...absolutely though must play on the boundary...not physical or strong enough to shift inside...

jimmy wilson there's a reason you play nickle corner pretty much...you aren't an enforcer at safety...wrap up and drive thru with the legs...that shoulder bump on mike evans was embarrassing...lesson learned i hope

michael thomas on specials is a difference maker...welcome to the 53 son your spot is booked...

team sure is giving walt aikens a long look in the 2 deep at safety...i'm not sure what i think there yet...not sure i see the physicality to survive as an every down safety...needs to add some weight and some muscle in the offseason if it's gonna be safety

jamar taylor i still need more...

louis delmas is already missing more tackles in space than i care to see...i can tell he's gonna frustrate me

overall i'm excited with the improvements i see...i think the offensive line already shows as much better coached i see growth with second year players games and guys that last year i would have told you to cut they looked so poor...the depth is better this year there's no doubt about it the rookie class looks very sound the scheme is miles better on offense...sure looks like it's gonna be a fun season...

Really look forward to these write-ups!

In your opinion, what would Miami be risking or losing by starting someone like McCain or Tripp in place of Wheeler?

i don't think mccains ready to play that kind of every down role at all right now...wheeler is probably gonna get first shot cause of his pay check...if they cut him though which i doubt my guess is philbin may try jenkins there first given the familiarity...just my guess...jenkins needs to show better in zone defense imo though...and i think he will also struggle in the run game...tripp is just very sound from what i saw vs the bucs at least...gonna take philbin going out of character to start him...but he did start a rookie qb and so who knows

Good write up a couple things

You are not bothered that Thomas was manhandled what seemed like every snap? I know it was McCoy but every play? I wonder how you feel about benton basically reacting to that game by benching Thomas for Smith that's what happened today in practice at least

I think the team is gearing up to play Davis before Taylor at corner. Do you agree of that's the depth chart?

Actually Thomas' first 5 snaps against him weren't bad...the rest was a s***storm. McCoy got his number and ran with it. I'm fairly sure other DTs in our division would see the same and take advantage.

i would expect miami to not give mccoy so many one on ones with thomas in a for keeps game...scheme to take away mccoys impact...especially if everyone else is pretty much handling their own...you can limit the impact of a one man wrecking crew if he's the only thing they got...be a in game adjustment if mccoy was shredding my right guard in game i'd change some things up to limit his opportunities...ie with play calls etc if nothing else...any game plan that watches mccoys tape against us for instance the oc unless he;s an idiot is gonna scheme to limit that as much as possible...i can't imagine miami would be any different...hell you don't need anything other than mccoys tape last year to tell you you better account for that...

as for the switch at todays practice i got no issues with it thomas played poorly but i don't see a guy that just can't play in the nfl like i did last year...and so imo he needs more reps and technique work...shelley smith would overset against mccoy i can tell ya that off what i have seen...so miami if they face something that damn destructive needs to scheme for it or make adjustments...

a real oc will

as for davis over taylor it looks that way but i'd wait for the dallas game to confirm it...it may have been davis dress rehearsal and taylor gets his this week...hard to say...but he does look like a different player this year on the boundary...i know that much...do i still think teams are gonna attack his aggressiveness though and make hay...absolutely

Love what I see out of Will Davis. I believe he could be special in time. Needs to work on discipline and some of the nuances of the position but his ball skills cannot be taught.

damn...just saw pounceys targeting week 4 now...sure sounds like bye week type stuff to me...we sure dodged a bullet with satele cause that sure looked like planted leg impact to me...thought he was done when i saw it live

That PI on will davis was BS. He clearly got his hands in front of the reciever going for the ball. they will just call it every time. I say so what, it will keep brady from trying to abuse him.

I just watched some of the NE/Philly game and I can tell ya'll what, these new rules were made for BB and Brady. no doubt in my mind.

You think egnew is going to make the 53 this year Hoops?
Any idea why they keep changing the nickel backers? Seems like that is Ellerbes strong suit.
Jimmy Wilson trying to tackle tight ends in space is scary..
Moreno will help the running game by just knowing how to read blocks..
Misi looked like Misi.. He will limit us
Delmas thinks he is 240
Dion Sims might end up being in the nfl for awhile.
Tannehill is going to throw for 4500 yards this year easy

Well what I love the most is that we have 3 top picks from last years draft that are finally playing. Taylor was hurt pretty bad last year and Thomas and Davis looked like they were in over their heads in the NFL. Basically lots of posters were writing most of those guys off on this forum. I do not care who picked or drafted them either I just want good/ great players on my team. I do believe coaching is many times the greatest difference in getting talent like that to rise to the occasion. Which gets me back to concerns about Philbin attempting to retain some of his coaching staff from last year that he was forced to let go. Anyway appreciate and like the write up Hoops been looking forward to it for awhile. Must add great to see we appear to be adding some OL and LB depth this year we really need it now lets get the same happening in the running back department.

nice work hoops. cant disagree with much at all. I said it before. Dallas got schooled and now he has to fight back. Not sure I have faith. time for Billy T. but thinking he is too stiff for G.

Can we just draft a true G for once?

One thing I noticed was how WIDE OPEN the RBs were in the flat. In an uptempo offense that will be there all day long. Better be careful though cause one time Tannehill went through the progressions to his left then pretty much threw it blind to the RB in the flat to the right. If I saw it you know some defensive coordinator will try to set up a pick six on that move.

Good recap. My #1 concern is the running game or lack of it. Backs that can't break tackles and a line that can't get any push. The line does seem better at pass pro though.
