i'd be remiss if i didn't start with the play of the starting qb in this one...tannehill had a poor outing for what my expectations are...almost threw a pick on a ball he threw too far inside to sims when he had all day protection wise i dont mind the decision but the ball can't be placed there...missed wallace on a vertical easy td that i swear the qb came to the los decided off the coverage he was gonna hold the safety with his eyes and throw without checking out to see how the wr got off the los there's no way that balls that far off unless he just completed his drop held the safety and fired to a spot...yes the offense is gonna be throw to a spot but i expect a 3rd year qb to verify the release see the stutter move at the los and adjust the throw accordingly as a result...that ones on the qb all the way...the int was just brutal he stared down hartline the entire way i dont care if he thought it was zone and the under corner was gonna sit and he could fit it in he stared it down so much from the get go that the corner just continued to drift right under the ball...that was awful...franchise qbs in the making are beyond that kind of play...one of the worst ints by tannehill i have seen to date...there was too much coverage over there to begin with...that was bush league type stuff

charles clay only played for a bit but he showed off that quick win to the inside at the los ability that he developed last year and made an easy pitch and catch play...winning quickly against coverage to the inside is a big deal lined up on the inside and clay has it...he wins quickly wide or flexed in the tight red zone also...

i see the same top end speed i saw from wallace last year but i swear he's not quite as explosive out of his in cuts this year...maybe just me i guess...i wonder if adding some weight has taken away a little bit of his explosive qualities...that extra gear is there though in a straight line...something to watch for i guess

offense looks to be more spread it around don't depend on hartline as much this year and that's fine by me...he will still get numbers but all that body catching makes for tight windows when dbs drive on the route...

dion sims i already talked about his importance in this offense he's much more dependable as a blocker this year...you can give him more responsibility and expect him to handle it...

at rb knowshon moreno ran thru more contact in this one than than lamar miller did the entire 2013 season it seemed like...better vision also and works better off his blockers than miller in the zone run game...it's too bad he doesn't have millers quick acceleration and top end speed...in pass pro blitz pick up he made it look easy...i'd be making that my starting rb if i was miami and miller as the 3rd down back where he can work more in space and make the first guys miss in the passing game in this heavy pass catching with the backs scheme...

finally got to see the williams kid work with nfl caliber players and i saw the long speed and more inportantly i saw the run thru contact and the carry the pile...this team may have a 3rd rb after all...still don't know if he can handle pass pro but he's got the body for it

offense is a little too cute at times...too much razzle dazzle in the backfield with the reverse action etc lazor needs to understand this isn't college teams catch up with that stuff...the matt moore pick 6 a perfect example...yes the balls bobbled but you're asking your qb to throw that ball around an unblocked edge defender by design alone without clarity i just think it's too cute...

saw another play i thought was a bit too cute also where hartline caught a ball in the middle of the field off pa too much back to the action stuff with the qb...it's nice to be able to run some of that cause the protection and assignment understanding this year of the rbs tight ends etc is way better but let's not get crazy...

awful lot of dink and dunk down the field ball out of hand sure but some of the calls where we want the rb on 3rd down rely too much on making a guy miss and not getting zone coverage i'd like to see us check out of some things that may come in time i guess...

get ready for a ton of read option to run the ball...that looks very obvious this year...inside hand offs to the backs off read option looks...probably the best way for us to do it with a more finesse than move guys front...i want to see and expect misdirection and wide stretch but it's very obvious to me this team won't make much hay running wide off the right tackle this year...james gets pushed up field and loses a lot on anything off tackle...well pretty much every time...this team needs to work more b gap on the right side but if you go to that well too much teams will account for it...

still shelley smith was a significant upgrade in the run game and imo from what i saw the best option for this team right now to start at right guard...the dallas front isn't very good but he was sound in pass pro and this team needs one guy that can win in the run game when it runs right at least...smith gives us the best shot

if you are gonna run behind james i think you have to work more combination blocks where he engages at the los and comes off and more seal down to the inside off a hard angle where he can get the movement...he loses too much to the outside and straight on...i will say this though the movement skills to the 2nd level we have in the starting tackles now is an entirely different level this year than last season...

brandon albert moved better in space than i expected...the tackles are sound in pass pro...that's a big deal for miami...i like the technique i like the short area lateral quickness and i like the awareness...james just needs time in the run game...saw james get looks at left tackle today sure looks to me like something happens to albert james gets shifted over to left tackle and either garner or fox if he makes the 53 is inserted on the right side...the only other guy i'd like to see at right tackle is billy turner but that appears to not be an option right now

speaking of billy turner yeah buddy i like what i see...sprung the big darkwa run with a beautiful combination block engage at the los come off to the fill lb at the 2nd level...that's textbook...imo this kid should be giving colledge a run for his money as the starting left guard...but i also realize he's probably better to get some more time to learn...i have no doubts he's a starting guard down the line and a damn good one...if he's not a right tackle...this kids an ideal scheme fit...

that leaves dallas thomas in excellent shape gets stood up too damn much and continues to lose physically...off balance a lot comes in with one snap vs the ones gives up an immediate qb pressure and hit that tannehill luckily didn't get hurt on being drug down...kind of thing you get a lower leg injury on...i'm ready to bump him to 3rd string left/right guard and i kinda wonder if he makes the 53...jeff samuda was cut last year for similar type results...

i can see that the offensive line is jelling...the results in the run game are gonna be uneven we will work the read option inside run game to spark it and hard lateral movement...but the unit looks like it's coming together...i like the depth potential should we get an injury or so in it also as long as it's not at tackle...

i think i saw jarvis landry take more hard contact in this preseason game than i saw him take his entire career at lsu...i don't like the return gig...i'd much rather they just let him be the 4th wr...he's not a natural returner and he doesn't have that quick burst or explosive quality...miami better think long and hard about cutting marcus thigpen unless they are gonna promote this williams rb kid to kick returner and the other williams to punt returner who looks run of the mill in that regard...i'm sure it will be landry but i don't like it...

sure looked to me like kyle miller is getting a serious look as the 3rd tight end...i'd sure be looking at other teams cuts...that kid knows the offense and his assignments i will give him that...

harold hoskins with an eye opening athletic catch and run play and place the ball over the goalline...hey you don't see that every day...he looks a little heavier to me now than in college like he's bulked up a bit to help as a blocker...that wasn't a run of the mill play...he's raw though didn't get his head around on a ball after the out cut like the next possession...he's something to watch come the 4th preseason game

matt moore played a better game at qb than the starter...that moon ball deep ball was a thing of beauty it seemed like it would never come down and he dropped it right in the bucket...first time i have seen moore outplay tannehill in a preseason game in the 3 years he's been here...but he did it and he deserves credit for his play in this one...

on defense listen that dallas oline is legit...to get 3 sacks against that group is a real feat...cameron wake beat what i think is a pretty good right tackle for 2 sacks and vernon matched up with one of the top 3 left tackles in football showed a good motor to after getting washed out not give up and work back to the inside to the qb...miamis good with it's starting de's...2 likely double digit sack artist on the edge from what i see

finally got to see a little something from mitchell at dt i like the motor he plays thru the whistle and he pursues the ball well...conditioning looks good...not sure what i think after that though odrick starks mitchell and who knows as the 4th dt...if anthony johnson played i didnt see much...

dion jordan same issues as a pass rusher one trick pony late off the ball the only thing i did see is he looked a little more fluid to me almost like he's already started trying to drop some bad weight and get some of the athlete backed...dropped better in this one

i think with the way dion jordan looks and fedes potential you keep him...i wouldn't expose any pass rush edge potential with upside...

i guess i could lie and say i think miami has an in house long term difference maker mike option but well i don't see it...misi looks like the best option for this year but i have seen nothing from anyone else or misi this preseason that says to me miami doesn't need to look for a long term every down mike as it's major need this coming offseason and to shift misi back to his best spot strong side olb...

hell i put trusnick in the grave before this one and i still wonder with when he got run late in this one how secure his spot is but he did run fill decent with the 1's...even if there's not an ounce of presnap read and dx in his game...and you will struggle like hell in space in coverage there...i don't know coin flip imo on if he makes it or not...this teams got other more athletic but less poa strength mike options...none of which will make much difference

philip wheeler i feel like i'm beating on the guy but missed tackles all over the place effective as a blitzer but no finish on the qb when he got there...still shows the worst situational awareness i've probably ever seen

depth lb wise mccain is lost off the los there's no way that won't get exposed right now if you play it against ones...you let that line up on the los and attack the ball or run it down from the backside when clean...as an every down lb you'd get torched...i love a feel good story as much as anyone but you are plum crazy if you want to tell me that guy is ready to play every down...

the only depth lb that shows smarts enough where you might trust it to start this year is tripp...he plays smart...he's not a real difference maker though yet...and i'm not sure he ever will be...but at least you got meat on the bone upside with him and mccain...i was all ready to crown tripp for a presnap read and dx off the formation the offense lined up in where he ran from the middle of the field and tackled the slot wr i think it was for like a 3 yard gain in space...great play kinda play where if it wasn't his primary assignment only a lb that has a feel for things would get there that fast and limit it...then i looked at it more and came to the realization that in that coverage the slot wr was gonna be his primary assignment and so it while a great play in space to make the tackle and get there wasn't as interesting to me from a instinctual aspect...

jelani jenkins 3 games lost in the run game in all 3 missing more tackles in zone coverage than i saw all last preseason...i see a player getting worse in coverage that still can't play the run with any intelligence

have to say these off coverages are giving away too much...i get you have to play some more off than you want cushion wise with an animal like dez bryant but some of the off coverages i saw with grimes and finnegan i mean you are just giving away too much...finnegan in particular looks to me like a guy teams will get after in front of the coverage...

jamar taylor telling me the more i see him that he's better inside than on the boundary...nice ride the wr on the inside hip and tip of a ball but on the boundary he gets beat over the top more than is acceptable...be it in camp or preseason games...

on the other hand you got will davis who has to play the boundary...romo sees him come on the field in the nickle and immediately light bulb goes off attack when he sees him over dez...get used to that teams are gonna test the **** out of him on the boundary til he starts making them pay...still i thought he did a good job on the route to arrive with the ball and get a hand in there...that kinda thing would have been an easy pitch and catch last year...he played scared in 2013 when he got game run vs 1's...

at safety louis delmas is looking like what i saw on detroit tape...i like the player in man coverage for a safety he's pretty fluid but i don't like the zone and box player cause he's out of control and doesn't always see what he's tackling...

michael thomas with some nice run fill plays in the run game...came up nicely and made sure tackles...

brutal special teams play...ehhh i think the staff can remedy that before we pay for it...i still don't know what rishard matthews was doing on the blocked punt...he looked clueless let the man get inside of him and then after the block instead of tackling the guy that recovered it for the cowboys he just stood there...what in the hell...that film study should be fun

i will finish with this...i think philbin deserves some credit for running a disciplined ship this year...we are running a new offense with tons of late movement and moving pieces etc the league is going way the hell overboard with all the contact calls they are making even and miami for the most part has avoided a lot of the calls i see being made against teams that lack discipline and don't respect the staff...case in point detroit this week with like 15 plus penalties against...tons of teams have been walking penalties..teams are cutting off their own heads with infractions...i don't see it with miami...

That play-call on the Moore pick six was cringe worthy. I better not see stuff like that again come regular season because it's asking for trouble.

Btw, I agree on the Landry thing. Dude doesn't need to be back there returning kicks.

Props to you Hoops. You got real.

Punctuation is your friend.

Damian Williams (the RB) is a good scheme fit. I thought he was an under the radar guy coming out.

excellent bed time story! Thanks Hoops. great stuff.

Thorough analysis Hoops - thank you. You see a helluva lot more than me when you're watching the game. Hats off to your observation skills.
I agree that Tannehill didn't look great but I felt that one of the prime objectives was to get a running game going and from that perspective it was pretty good. Knowshon and Damien Williams were big decent pluses. Tannehill usually gives me a fair amount of confidence, but I wasn't feeling it on the night. Also felt that maybe Lazor was trying to keep the passing game pretty bland and not reveal too much. Gibson wasn't a feature and he's usually very solid.
I would also be tempted to scrap the Landry PR/KR experiment. He's trying but it's not natural.

I think the pick looked a lot worse than it really was because there was a defender down around his legs and the ball just didn't go where he wanted it to. Don't get me wrong, it was a terrible decision that likely would have put Hartline in a coma even if he completes it, but it wasn't as clown car comical as it appeared. In fact I'm pretty sure Moore threw into the same coverage on the same route that almost got Hazel killed (how he was able to participate in practice today I have no idea). Moore's was a bad throw also but he drew the flag to keep the drive going.

Excellent write up, Hoops.

One thing that bugs the life out of me: Why in Hades does it seem like every other NFL team has a kicker that can boot it out of the endzone on kickoffs and kick 60 yard field goals... and a kick returner than has amazing quick twitch and 4.3 or lower speed... and we for YEARS can't get a KR to run lower than a high 4.4 (Thigpen -- terrible vision and sub-par returner) or now, a another 4.65 possession WR to return kicks and punts. PLEASE PEOPLE! These special teams yards are guaranteed yards IF you have a real kicker and a real returner!

Didn't we try the Bess experiment at KR and PR? Isn't one go round w. a 4.7 returner enough????

I guess a team that over-values possession WRs will also see no use for an actually fast and quick returner. And a soft-legged kicker, lol

Hoops

Your analysis is always appreciated. One of the reasons I am a frequent visitor to Finheaven.

Didn't meant the "thumbs down". Damn iPhone screen is too small. Great write up Hoops.

* I agree Landry shouldn't be returning kicks. Seems like we never pay any attention to that role throughout the offseason and make random guesses as the preseason unfolds. The Canes always have 3-4 guys who are more dangerous in that role than anyone on the Dolphins

* Landry's reach back catch is the type of thing we need from him. Expanded windows.

* Dion Sims is frustrating. He blocks well, like a Michigan State guy should, and now that he's trimmed down and looks the part I expect it to translate to improved quickness in the passing game. Doesn't happen. Still looks like a sluggish '70s era tight end, in a league with heavy run emphasis.

* Billy Turner's best trait is pop-pop on the combination block. Very quick with sure aim. I still haven't seen him against a true load, like the guys who exposed him during Senior Bowl week. Maybe we're determined not to ruin his confidence.

* McCain would be brutal as a starter right now. He'd make the occasional chase down play but otherwise you're giving up far too much. I had to laugh last week when he flanked Jordan on the right side. Imagine a physical team salivating at the prospect of that lineup across from them.

* Secondary is our biggest wild card entering the season, IMO. I think it could be above average to a sore spot. At least Reshad Jones seems to be moving more decisively this season, even if we won't see it for a month and I think his level was always overstated

Good write up, except Moore did not outplay Tannehill. Moore had a pick 6 and almost another one. He was up against 2nd and 3rd stringers. He had 2 good throws, the deep throw and seam route at the end of the game. He also almost got Landry killed with a ball high and behind him that Landry made a great catch with. The last drive was mostly great runs, one good pass with the seam route, and a big help with Cowboy penalties.
