pretty much my take on the day...

started out with a small school over 6 ft over 200 lb corner in walt aikens...doesnt have great long speed shows fluid hips and feet i do think he's a scheme fit...of the small school dbs i think pierre desir taken just after him has more upside but he's not a scheme fit and so i see why they passed...aikens has pretty average ball skills and awareness i don't see a lot of upside here although he is a little raw and i expect there to be a serious transition jumping up to this level of competition...i don't think he will give jamar taylor a run for his money i just dont see him beating taylor out who's tools are too good but what i do think is he has a real shot to beat out will davis especially if davis hasnt made strength and hand usage strides come this training camp...

will davis the honeymoon is over...

up next arthur lynch tight end 5th round grade seems about right to me in line tight end who can work the underneath routes and intermediate has no stretch the field capability i don't think he will unseat dion sims as the primary in line tight end as i expect sims to have made some real strides in his blocking after an nfl offseason and working on his craft this year but i do think michael egnew has been put on notice...i think lynch has a real shot to make the 53 as worst case the 3rd tight end...not much burst nothing wows you but more polish than egnew...could see a lot of action in 2 tight end sets where we go big and be worked off misdirection and play action in the pass game...

ahh jordan tripp olb the weakside backer group has been put on notice...instincts and awareness finds the football...tested damn well very fluid every down speed...sideline to sideline lb...confident ****y explosive to the ball...i think this kid has real potential to unseat philip wheeler as the starting wolb or get into jelani jenkins run even...but worst case we have a more fluid rangy athletic special teams ace...no doubt in my mind he makes the 53...just a matter of what's it gonna be...all specials or more...does this kid have some mike potential??? i like the pick...this is where i think adding another olb makes sense...day 3

matt hazel imo gives armon binns a run for his money as potential 5th wr...tracks the ball well down the field has plus size and 4.5 speed not a burner but plays as fast as he times i'd say can work inside in the slot and give us a size mismatch like binns and i think he has some vertical ability that binns lacks...does he id coverage and run routes accordingly though??? we' will find out in camp...i dont think binns is particularly adept at that anyways...i know one thing the wr camp competition this year is sure gonna be a fun one...who would have thought 2 years ago we'd be cutting actual pro talent at the position...sure looks like that may be the case now

the 7th round de out of marist i dont know much but it's gonna be an uphill climb to unseat any of the four de's in front of him and be active on game day in 2014...probably looking at the practice squad if anything...good luck denting that game day unit

Thanks hoops just want to throw in 2 cents most of these guys come from small programs which should make it tougher to make the squad.

I may be a small bit higher on Aikens than you, but I agree he probably won't unseat Taylor.. But given his physicality, I think him beating out Davis is likely. Even with added weight & strength I seriously doubt Davis plays with the same punch as Aikens, it's just not his game.. Aiken's a much better tackler too and you know the coaching staff is going to appreciate that.

All I have to say is that I love the James pick in the 1st round so much. Its an amazing pick due to our system and what type of offense we want to run.

Landry was the best pick of the draft though. Absolute steal and will be such a stud for us.

agreed...you aren't gonna fix davis as a tackler...is what it is...but if he's a fit for any scheme it's ours...

Good post

Wouldn't Hazel have to compete for 6th? Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Landry, Mathews, Binns. Unless you forsee a trade or a cut

I have seen the comparisons to Boldin on Landry but I like the Hines Ward and OJ McDuffie comparisons better. He will bring an edge to the receiving corps that we have needed forever.

What sells me on James is that he is not a right side projection. He has played the right side the whole time, for 49 starts or whatever. Armando did a study of the left tackles switching over to the right side, and it wasn't pretty. I like that James played right and stays on the right. He has to get stronger, though (just like Thomas last, year, trending the lack of strength program at Tennessee).

I loved the Jordie Tripp pick for where we got him.

they won't keep 6 wides unless they are going with like 2 rbs or 2 tight ends or we are gonna run one wild offense...i imagine one of the guys that made the 53 last year is gonna be let go or maybe even traded/cut...but at the end of the day you keep your best 53 regardless and figure everything else out after...so who knows..i cant see them keeping less than 3 tight ends either

and at least if we have a camp injury at wr we got depth at the position now...

I knew you were gonna like that LB Hoops. At the least he should unseat Justin Trusnik as our backup LB special teams guy. It's nice to finally have a draft where every player we went out and got is a scheme fit.

Davis ain't gonna be unseated by anybody bitches!! Davis gonna be our best player from the 2013 draft. Book it!!!

good point about 6 though cause right now that would absolutely be my 5 and the only guy that would have a shot of breaking that up provided they are all healthy would be hazel...

one of the slots are probably the likely candidate with landry here now...so gibby and mathews better ball out...as far as i'm concerned though hazels gonna have to really show in camp for me to cut one of the top 4 from last year

I do love Davis' ball skills. I think he's gonna be good

davis has ball skills and awareness that i dont see from aikens...so that's a feather in his cap...but again minus the strength and hand use gains to hide that long speed and such a poor tackler he's gonna always wear a target...

we'll see come camp...in the preseason if i see small slot size wrs moving him all around the room to create separation and get him off balance easily he'd be on the chop block for me...you can't always play 8 yards off the ball...it's pitch and catch when you have his current game that way

EGNEW IS DONE!!!! He will be cut... Lynch is your third TE

WHEELER IS PUT ON NOTICE - so I expect some kind of returns in the first 3 games and then he will fade out off... Jenkins and Tripp better pony up!!

Binns or Matthews is gonna get cut over Landry -> he will get playing time

Hazel (P.S.)

Well we all know that injuries can happen in camp and preseason look no further thatn Binns last year , Keller etc so its good to have bodies there and as you say some actual legitimate options.
