Tua time!
That was a tough loss...no doubt...had a lead with under 4 minutes left and couldnt finish...but im encouraged
lets get to why.
for one thing the preparation by the coaching staff was top shelf...vance joseph had his unit prepared they played assignment football and they communicated very well...the run d and run fits by the lbs and safeties was really well done...the contain of the qb also about as good as you could ask for...vance joseph looks the part
two things bit us in the end. The aligning maxwell inside the formation vs baldwin on the fateful 4th down was one. He is a boundary corner he is not a two way go one and he played an outside leverage technique and just gave away the middle of the field. The same thing would have happened had it been lippett for instance. These arent top shelf redirect quickness guys. We paid for it. Have to play them where their length is their advantage.
the other was the separation out of the cut in the tight red vs bobby mccain for the td. Something that will keep hurting us...hes the slot so it is what it is but theres more where that came from.
in terms of personnel on d i thought mario williams played a stellar game contain wise and overall. That guy bought in he maintained his outside shoulder free he pushed the pocket he bottled up the qb...great job...hopefully hes ok health wise.
Jordan phillips play has really taken a step up...he was gap quick he showed power he hustled he got engaged high and cut and came back in and moved laterally well...another guy that was a difference maker
suh was suh. Which is exactly what we should expect and why hes one of the top dts in the game
andre branch forced a hold and had a couple pressures one of which if not for seattle had dialed up the deep ball and maxwell was beaten bad. I have no doubts that branch effected that throw.
at lb the unit as a whole played very well. Base d lb play very solid. Not quite as good as youd like at the poa but much better than we have seen in miami in a long time. Thats was adding a mike that can play means...kiko ran sideline to sideline he made the tackles the mike needs to make he played every down he almost undercut a ball in zone he is back to the old athlete form and if he can maintain it and health we are in business.
koa was physical and played well overall. The biggest concern i have for the d right now though is koa in the nickel and sub as a starter. Hes just not quite athletic enough and redirect quick enough and even in zone it shows and the more miami sticks with it the more i expect it to be exploited. Nickel and sub needs to be jelani and kiko. Hopefully after a week of actual game prep from jelani that will be the case sunday. Team needs hewitt also to get quicker with his assignments and keys so he can be a depth option also.
jelani got mostly base run sunday and he played well.
i have to say quddus had about as good a debut game as you could ask for. Excellent in the box showed good range good quick acceleration and hes got instincts that miami hasnt seen in a while opposite reshad. Might have been the player of the game on d. Ball skills on the int and a flat fantastic 4th down stop of baldwin on a play if you dont have instincts they convert easily given how much space he had to cover. That was a top shelf read attack and force on the ball play. Everything about his game yesterday was difference maker
reshad as advertised. Physical forceful flying all over the field and trying to take heads off. I think hes the best strong safety in football.
at corner i was highly impressed with xavien howards debut. He showed great feet really good close on the football and close to the route when the play was in front of him. Wasnt tested deep and that will be something to watch for but he checked off every box in that game he could have. Played really smart really assignment conscious communicated well to shifts and alignments maintained outside contain in the run game forcing the ball inside to his help and very solid awareness. Absolutely should be the starter and we may really have something there. He was physical he tackled that was a terrific first game boundary start.
Communication overall from the lb unit to the secondary was really clean and top shelf even. Kudos to vance joseph and the staff.
on offense it was a struggle. No other way to put it. The qb was empowered and he showed leadership and there was a fire yesterday in him that we havent seen much of. He wanted it. Its amazing how much difference confidence in the qb can make. From checks at the los to alerts with protections and pointing out blitzers and the mike to the center to hand signals to the skill guys and telling the rb foster especially who to pick up he was as prepared as he could have been.
A couple times i thought he read man and got zone and seattle played a ton of zone at times where i think gase expected man even. We only scored 10 points so obviously we dont want to take this too far but thats one hell of a tough environment and we were missing our red zone iso option and it really showed.
this team needs dvp back. We need him asap. Stills and landry and caroo just arent gonna threaten anyone. The units average at best without him. I cant say it enough. Theres no iso option wr on this team without him.
jordan cameron with yet another terrible coverage read play vs zone. This guy does not read coverage well. That was a very basic zone look where the hell are you going carrying the route on the "drop". Im annoyed with the guy frankly. He plays dumb as a route runner.
rush 3 drop 8 deep ball to stills 6 points dropped right thru his hands. Killer drop. Oline blocks it up tanny can let it develop he lets it go as stills clears the safety level and dropped. Sucks
at rb foster played well. That was a lot of run on a guy coming off an achilles. Yeesh. But he did the most with it. Stay healthy. Picked up blitzers in pass pro made guys miss in space smooth with the ball and nice hard line cuts from east west to north south to make the man miss one on one.
team missed ajayi if you ask me. Goalline and short yardage especially. Could have used a little more physical tone at times. I hope that demotion is a wake up call for him. We need him
not sure if tanny checked out of that 4th and inches to that run call but if he did he shouldnt have if it was a qb sneak initial call. There was no lb a gap presence pre snap you take that from under center and you pick a side and convert. Instead landry pushed the strong safety lined up tight to the formation on the edge into the tackle even.
oline wise steen handled the snaps well and i thought did a solid job in a silent snap count environment. Thats a lot tougher than it looks and when its that loud the ball is just asking to be snapped prior to the qb signaling ready especially when the qb has as much freedom pre snap as tannehill does. Steen got beat by quickness for one immediate pressure but he wasnt the reason many things broke down.
overall the oline play in terms of guys in one on one matchups was very solid. Tunsil blows assignments thats his only issue in pass pro. That should come with more game snaps. He blew a twist and a lb blitz both ended drives his head has to be on more of a swivel but some of that is to be expected with tackle kicked to guard. If he got hands on you you did nothing. Has to understand what guys are trying to do by how they engage him. Zone concepts hes reponsible for an area pass off and pick up
run game production more scheme based than anything else. Team cant line up and run it despite the tempo out of base looks thus read option employed to try and offset. Hopefully gets better consistency wise with time.
thought gase called it pretty safe but in that environment in your first game as an offense you dont want to get cute with it. The wr screens to start the game were just eaten up. Realy nice empty backfield red zone qb sneak call for the td. Not sure why seattle didnt alert to that pre snap by how we lined up. Hard to run iso as a play caller when theres no one to run it with.
had a poor alignment fg blocked and a dropped td and lost by 2 points. Couldnt finish but overall im highly encouraged with the effort and proud of our teams showing. That kind of game is something that miami can carry forward. Its a tough contest up coming and in the next fee weeks but i feel completely confident that adam gase and vance joseph will have them as prepared as they could be. And we have question mark guys going in playing at a high level.
see ya next week
