i'll start this by saying that i doubt thomas got much if any game week prep run at right tackle this season and so that does need to be taken into consideration here...and maybe there should be some benefit of the doubt given here with some of this as a result...although that's not very much what i'm about...i'd also be remiss if i didnt add that i dont think much of the players he faced in this games edge rush abilities or rush arsenal etc and that also needs to be considered here...darryl tapp is a marginal career nfl player way i see it rushed more like an olb in a 2 point stance doesnt have much going for him with that rush either and james jones is a solid player but he's most effective kicked inside in the sub and on the edge in space doesnt have much more to offer other than good length and stride...

i guess its ok to also mention here that had dallas thomas not gotten tossed at guard on that albert injury play tannehill can step up inside the pocket and alberts never injured on the play...thomas lost early his man came off to the qb and garner tried to push that man past the qb and shoved him to ground and onto alberts leg who was bent over backwards on the play...tannehill had wide pressure from garners side and pressure up the middle thus no pocket to step up into...injuries happen i know and that's not what this eval is about...but it still sucks

ok let's get to it...thomas entered the game at right tackle with 4 minutes left in the first half...here's what my notes were on his play...again noting that he barely sniffed ansah on the edge and just about all his work was against pass rush and edge talents i dont think much of...

***missed hold on a spin move by tapp overset to the outside didnt have the ability lateral quickness wise to recover grabbed tapp just before the ball was released from behind 14 yard gain i think it was to wallace on the over the shoulder sideline catch...should have been a penalty

***split on a double team where pouncey is suppose to come over after thomas engages the rusher thomas doesnt do enough with his initial punch to get the edge player off balance set to the outside knowing he has help coming from the inside and allow pouncey to come over to the engaged players exposed rib cage and finish him...instead they are split ball comes out before it matters

***nice combination block pass off vs a stunt where he engaged the de slanting down inside and passed off to the looping around dt suh kicked out nicely to meet him solid play

***shows the ability to anchor vs power bull rush definitely looks to have better base vs power to sit down and not just get walked back...last year he didnt have this ability...i'm cautious with this though cause i dont think he faced much but he did have one nice power rush attempt rep vs ansah who tried to go thru him where he sat down well and anchored...and there's definitely some growth there...more stout than i expected

***takes so much of the contact...even on the move...

*** feet look relatively average look more guard than tackle athletically...lateral agility and abilities stand out in a bad way...oversets commits to the outside gets off balance and as a result very susceptible to spin moves and outside inside redirection...i think he will open the door for speed power and for the most direct route to the qb inside...just doesnt have the lateral short area movement skills to match the edge rush athletes he will face in the next 7 games...he's gonna try and compensate for some athletic limitations and thats gonna open up a wide variety of things against high end rush talent

***technique in pass pro looks improved base is better not crossing over his feet or standing up and running out of his stance...last year it couldnt have been more ugly...needs work on hand placement and an effective punch...rarely has a guy off balance...

*** looks lost in the run game on anything where he's asked to engage at the los and come off to the lb level...hesitant and lost...some of this may be lack of familiarity with zone assignments at tackle and needs more practice and game reps...

*** one really nice run block pouncey engages the player at the los and comes off as thomas comes over at an angle and drives the edge player down inside the formation for the big damian williams off right tackle gain...this is probably where i think his best work in the run game lies...angle blocks at the los where he doesnt have to think about who he needs to pick up knows his primary assignment and can get on them with his size at a positive diagonal angle...

last miami possession of the game after the detroit 3 and out 1st and 10 he's supposed to engage pounceys man at the los and pass off to pouncey and come get the olb at the 2nd level while the center satele picks up the ilb at the 2nd level and the slot corner carries coverage...damian williams will cut up inside off tackle and inside the slot vacated zone this should be an 8 yard gain or more...it's set up exactly like we want it...instead he engages at the los and comes off and hesitates and picks up no one and the olb makes the tackle for a 4 yard gain...shouldnt happen can't happen...he never touched anyone...just stood around like he didnt know his assignment...should be 2nd and 2 and we are in business and the run pass playbook is wide open

overall this frankly looks like a guard athlete trying to play in space to me...not enough pop on contact at guard kicked outside to tackle where the lateral short area quickness and athlete dont fit the bill...looks like a soft version of willie colon playing tackle in a zone scheme...i dont see this going well...miami better protect him as much as possible with tight end help...dion sims stay healthy...i cant see us getting by with many 5 man front protections anymore...i doubt he will get to much past 3 yards of the los and i doubt he will give you much in the screen game i can see him having serious issues trying to flow down the los engaged and keep de's from setting the edge...

they can coach this kid up as much as they want technique and hand placement wise they can't fix the athlete and lateral abilities in space and the balance issues as a result...good luck ryan tannehill

I dont know enough about football to refute what you have said so I have to take it as you state. My question is - isnt Fox or Turner better athletically for the outside? and if you state this then the coaches must know it too - why do you think they like thomas at that position or is it just a lack of quality depth??

i dont know what to say about fox...they kept a guy on the 53 with injury issues his entire career that they havent even activated pretty much...odd to me...turners a better athlete across the board than thomas i have no doubts on that...james and albert are such high end short area lateral athletes and technique players they are so sound as a result and can handle a variety of different rush moves...not to mention very good feet

thomas feet aren't bad i guess but the lateral athlete says to me needs to be in a phone booth...it does not look like a zone tackle to me...if they leave him one on one vs high end rushers i have a strong feeling tannehills gonna be getting some clean to the qb earhole shots cause once he overcommits it's curtains when those guys put their foot in the ground and slap him by and redirect inside...

Hoops - I appreciate your thorough and detailed analysis. Most of Finheaven has written off Dallas Thomas but nearly every week, Lazor says something very complimentary about him in his press conference (and Lazor gives out very few compliments). I have a lot of confidence in John Benton. He has successfully put a new group together and coached them where they responded well covering for Albert's unplanned departure.
Benton works with these guys every day. If he prefers Thomas to Fox and Turner, then he has his reasons. Buffalo is a good test.

hey i like benton too...and i just go off what i see..but there's no way i'd feel good about this plan b...but i also know that in a short week you arent gonna have many options either...i fear for my qb now though i know that...

The unknown variable here is that we all assume that Turner should be better than Thomas, but we arent seeing him practice.

Clearly he is making some major mental mistakes right now that makes starting him essentially a non starter. That is the only explanation that I can come up with.

Dallas Thomas is going to be a name mentioned a lot on Thursday, Friday, and through the weekend if he starts at right tackle.

I promise you that.

it will be interesting to see if the bills resort to running stunts and games pass rush wise cause if it was me off this tape i'd scheme to get that right tackle one on one and tell my edge rusher to destroy him...no matter what miami does they wont be able to help him every pass rush scenario snap...they just won't...but it sure doesnt look like they need games to get to the qb on the right side to me...we can roll protection to that side etc but i bet money they think they will get home without problems rushing just 4...and if they can drop 7 oh boy are we gonna have us a tough time doing anything on offense...maybe the bills d in a short travel week will show up worn out...

the right tackle wears a target...how much can your protect the right tackle anyways when you are gonna be leaving yourself to one on one opportunities for dareus kyle williams and jerry hughes...

He hasn't been healthy either, but I mentioned same thing in another thread, if he was healthy enough then we would know for sure its strictly coaches decision and they just don't think he is ready. I think we just don't know for sure which one it is yet, or maybe it's a little bit of both?

I definitely see them doing this.
Its what they did to the Chiefs and it essentially annihilated them. Just fumbled the game away.

so if they rush 4 and drop 7 and you got sims on the field off right tackle staying in to help in pass pro you are essentially looking at running out there 3 receiving options and a back out of the back field covered likely in the flat or underneath by a lb and 6 men covering your 3 downfield options

gonna mean a lot of check down vs drop zones

correct me if im wrong but Williams primarily rushes from that side of the formation..? I hope to god their game plan doesn't call for Dallas to block Williams one on one in obvious passing situations. I mean we could see a repeat of the play down here last year that cost us the game.

edited to add that I just read your post about how much help can you give him (with the other matchups) point well made.

Hey Hooshoops, its gonzorot from the dolphins scout board from way back.. Good to see ya i miss informed football discussions about the fins so i think ill start coming here

Anyways regarding Dallas Thomas, I've actually been pretty impressed with his play at Guard so far this year, much to my surprise he hasn't been a sieve and if his play continues possibly is the fins most improved player next to jenkins.

I've seen him show pretty good quickness on run blocking this year particularly against the bears but then again who doesn't look great against them.. Im actually a little more afraid of Hughes lining up against Thomas then Mario Williams who i think he would matchup better with..

The bills have a massive Dline though which opens up lanes for the LB's to make plays, Running the football is pretty much going to be impossible up the gut unless tannehill starts out on fire and get the defense to drop linebackers into coverage. Scoring points will be tough but i think Tannehill in lazor's offense has progressed enough to pull this game out and will perform much better then in the week 2 matchup.. I wish Tannehill wasn't banged up but hopefully its nothing thats going to hinder him from using his newly utilized speed to gash defenses if they do drop lb's like in the above scenario. Defensively i cannot state enough how much easier it will be to defend fred jackson as opposed to spiller for us, For our team we handle power runners much better then all world speed HB's like Spiller, Bush,Ellington types who can turn a corner in a flash.. I see our defense putting up a great performance thursday night and coming out for vengance from week 2.

One idea i've always toyed with, particularly last year when our Oline was a joke was moving Pouncey to Tackle, Guy is our most athletic lineman hands down and i think he may be able to handle himself well at RT or even LT in a pinch.. it would allow Thomas to stay at Guard with Colledge who im souring on but is acceptable. I think pouncey would be excited for the move as well since elite Tackles get paid more then Elite G/C's in this league. I know it likely will never happen but not many people thought he would be bumped to guard after satele proved he is a good center (Trading him was a mistake i've long been a fan of satele's play)

As athletic as Pouncey is, he's got some very short arms, not much length at all. He's strictly an interior option, simply not enough guys with his build making a living on the edge, if any. I'm still underwhelmed by Dallas, anything would've been an improvement over last year. We're in trouble with him starting at guard, I'm really worried about him on the outside. We need to get a top level guard next offseason BAD. Mike Iupati come one down.
