GREEN BAY AT MIAMI

20-31 244 yards 2 tds 2 ints 7.9 ypa 83.3 qbr 1 sack 7 yards lost…what does the tape say???

1[SUP]ST[/SUP] QUARTER

10:00 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 7-0 score gb 49 yard line shotgun trips 3 wide bottom side single back shifts to top side of qb pre snap packers show a clean edge db at the los pre snap in a blitz look if he stays at depth and picks up the rb coming out of the backfield the qb can work the depth out route to clay in line off left tackle if he brings pressure he dumps to the back miller out the backfield in the flat…db blitzes tannehill flips to the back vs a lb in space just prior to contact for a 9 yard gain +1

8:30 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 7 7-0 score gb 35 yard line shotgun 3 wide single back to qbs right takes snap miller sees the walk up db blitzer bottom side and moves to pick him up tannehill play fakes vs air as a result of this need to pick up the bottom side blitzer qbs eyes go from middle of the field to bottom side (the vacated area where the db blitzer came from) has 2 receivers working depth routes to that side is waiting on the routes to develop jawaun james engages and is then beaten inside to the qb and he's clean up the middle hits qb just as tannehill gets rid of the ball…didn’t have time to let those routes develop as result of quick pressure good job to work the bottom side post snap once he id’s the edge blitzer db…a good example of pre snap recognition and post snap adjustment +1

8:24 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 7 7-0 score gb 35 yard line shotgun 5 wide empty set trips bottom side gb rushes 4 post snap qb takes the snap looks top side to dion sims working a outside release corner route to the boundary away from the depth safety with a trail coverage corner…jawaun james immediately post snap is bull rushed right back and just prior to contact tannehill gets the ball out slightly overthrown…I don’t have a problem with this play that’s a very tight window and sims on a corner route with a trail corner on his hip anda depth safety coming over is a sketchy option although looking at the coverage and the other routes I think this was the correct one to go to +1

4:02 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 7-3 score gb 21 yard line shotgun 4 wide single back Wallace motions tight to the formation bottom side screenpass to Wallace charles clay blows the key block on the play in space gains 0 yards…all play call +1

3:15 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 7 7-3 score gb 13 yard line RZ shotgun 4 wide single back to qbs top side hits landry working a press the chains to the correct depth in cut to the middle of the field vs an 8 yards off coverage…qb does a good job not to stare this down in his drop keeping the depth db who is reading the qb early in the route from being able to jump it and forcing him to stay at depth and play it honest…9 yard gain 1[SUP]st [/SUP]down conversion…eye discipline is key here +1

2:05 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and goal 7-3 score gb 1 yard line RZ shotgun 3 wide single back to qbs left clay off left tackle a yard off the los…hartline top side being played straight up press by the db but lined up off the los to help his release…clay mathews is over charles clay pre snap showing rush once clay releases and Mathews comes qb has a 2 way go but either way ball must come out quick…either the quick slant to hartline if he wins inside early on a not playing any leverage press db or the flat to clay releasing there with a lb not having enough angle to cover the depth to the front pylon…qb takes the snap takes a bucket step back to get depth needed to make a throw vs the wide clean rush looks to clay releasing to the front pylon has it but for some reason comes off it to the quick slant hartline has won inside on and just prior to clean contact high from clay mathews fires a ball too far outside on the slant needed to be more to the middle of the field incomplete…poor placement…he had a td 2 ways on this play and he missed both of them -1

2[SUP]ND[/SUP] QUARTER

12:43 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 19 7-3 score mia 18 yard line shotgun 3 wide single back shifts top to bottom side next to qb pre snap…clay in line off left tackle 3 point stance takes the snap gets zone hits clay sitting in the soft hole in the middle of the zone 7 yard gain +1

12:11 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 12 7-3 score mia 25 yard line shotgun 4 wide single back trips top side landry motions from the top side boundary down inside takes the snap gets wide soft pressure steps up inside nicely but in his drop even he’s staring down the press the seam then work the depth out cut to landry and fires a ball a under zone db in the flat reading the qbs eyes on the play jumps in front of and goes up in the air and makes the leaping int on…qb read the zone coverage properly and there was a hole there but he lacked eye discipline in his drop head needs to be in the middle of the field and then that db can’t jump that route…zone coverage dbs are reading the qbs eyes especially on that down and distance…tannehill gave it away on that one and he paid for it…must maintain head and eye discipline…this is a rare mistake by the qb in that regard when you study his tape -1

8:01 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-3 score mia 32 yard line under center 2 wide single back clay motions bottom side inside the formation then back outside…post snap Miami works a bottom side play action clay comes across the formation and picks up the top side edge rusher walk up safety and runs him by the qb who climbs forward nicely and throws a depth crosser route to Wallace who gets hit just as the ball arrives by the depth driving on the play safety…nice play by the safety there arrived right as the ball did incomplete qb grade +1

2:57 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 8 10-3 score mia 18 yard line shotgun 4 wide single back hits clay working on a clean release in cut to the middle of the field vs a off coverage safety for a 14 yard gain…nice job to throw it over the engage and then try and read the qbs eyes and get into the throwing lane lb coming across on the play +1

2:22 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-3 score mia 32 yard line shotgun 4 wide single back gb safety blitzes top side post snap miller picks him up qb knows he’s got a single safety at depth and can take a shot here once he sees that walk up safety pre snap…finishes his drop steps forward nicely and looks to the bottom side boundary where hartline is one on one on a straight vertical with no safety help...hartline releases off the los outside then takes it vertical qb throws a 50/50 ball that hartline must make a better play on ball is picked off for an int by the coverage corner…there’s nothing wrong with that play…it’s correct by the qb across the board…result is an int but qb does not get a poor grade there +1

1:03 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-3 score mia 20 yard line shotgun 3 wide single back to qbs right 10 packers defenders within 5 yards of the los with a safety walking up late being the 10 and a single deep safety playing behind them…takes snap ball fakes to the inside run fires to the top side boundary to wallace running a skinny post he has won inside of on the db over the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] level defenders trying to get in the throwing lane placed right in wallace arms where he can run thru it on the play and with an angle where the coming forward deep safety is likely beaten for a run away td opportunity vs the trail cover corner and Wallace drops it…this is a potential 80 yard td off the board cause wallace lets the ball go right thru his hands worried about that inside safety contact on the play…you can’t throw it any better than that +1

1:00 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 10 10-3 score mia 20 yard line shotgun 4 wide Moreno motions from the backfield to the slot pre snap making it an empty set Wallace top side has 8 yards off coverage hits Wallace on a under stop route and with rac he gains 11 yards +1

:54 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-3 score mia 31 yard line shotgun 4 wide single back to qbs right landry motions inside the formation bottom side then back outside the formation works a arrow route press the boundary then cut back inside to the middle of the field qb fires the ball timed spot on right by the depth lb in the zone for rac 19 yard gain…really nice play here fires the ball right by the depth lb trying to read the qbs eyes sitting in the middle of the field...could not have been timed or thrown any better +1

:47 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-3 score 50 yard line shotgun 4 wide single back to qbs right top side slot db over landry blitzes post snap as does the ilb mia has Moreno to pick up the top side blitz db but the packers slant the dt down and 3 miami olinemen pick him up and it allows the clean inside lb blitzer directly to the qb...tannehill sees this in his drop even and just prior to contact gets the ball out high over the head of a depth stop route to Wallace bottom side…the deal on this play is hit the shallow cross to landry after the blitz slot db comes or if he has time and if the ilb blitzer gets picked up hit mike Wallace on the depth out vs the bail out bottom side boundary coverage…but the protection gets blown and it kills the play…should have been a 16 yard gain stop route bottom side if that ilb gets picked up but the slant down of the dt by the packers confused the protection…can’t let the plays develop qb grade +1

:43 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 10 10-3 score 50 yard line shotgun 3 wide all 3 tight to the formation…clay and a rb lined up to each side of the qb pre snap…clay and the back Moreno will release post snap into routes Moreno will chip the bottom side rusher over albert on the play prior to releasing into his route…Moreno ends up hitting albert on his elbow in the process and albert grabs his arm and releases the edge rusher directly to the qb who is going thru his progressions after just finishing his drop with his 3 receivers working depth routes and the clean edge rusher sacks him before those routes can even develop…sack completely on the protection qb grade +1

:37 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 17 10-3 score mia 43 yard line shotgun empty set 4 wide after miller motions out of the backfield clay in line screen pass to clay on the engage and release behind the los gains 14 yards…colledge blows the key space block on the play or it breaks for a 1[SUP]st [/SUP]down…all play call +1

3[SUP]RD[/SUP] QUARTER

15:00 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-3 score mia 20 yard line shotgun 4 wide single back to qbs right…bottom side 2 receivers in a stack dion sims is off the los stack receiver…clear out routes hits sims at the los vs the off coverage created by the stack set for a 5 yard gain…all play call +1

13:45 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 10-3 score gb 35 yard line shotgun 4 wide single back to qbs right top side safety from a very 2 deep look comes flying to the los to blitz…this is an opportunity to take a shot as a result…qb has Wallace working a vertical down the boundary top side (blitz side)…protection picks up the blitzer and tannehill throws deep to wallace in the end zone...pass interference called on the cover db impeding wallace down the field on the play +1

12:46 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 10 10-3 score gb 14 yard line RZ shotgun 3 wide Wallace and Moreno to each side of the qb…wallace motions out to the flat for the swing pass late tannehill fakes to the swing and goes to the play call the screen to moreno releasing top side…play call +1

11:54 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 7 10-3 score gb 11 yard line RZ shotgun 4 wide tight to the formation bottom side trips single back to qbs left…packers show blitz pre snap and come post snap bringing one more top side than Miami can pick up qb sees this and just prior to immediate pressure contact while back pedaling releases a lofted ball to landry in the end zone…landry bottom side on the los does a nice job early in the stem of his route to chop down the dbs inside arm trying to ride him and win inside and stack the db and the ball is placed where landry reaches up and snatches it in the air for the td…great play by landry and the qb here…real polish in the route from landry to chop that arm and lean on the db and then stack him TD +1

3:24 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 5 17-10 score mia 25 yard line shotgun single back 2 steps of trips stacked top and bottom side both tackles are lined up in a stack…takes the snap wr screen bottom side to hartline gains 14 yards but called back for illegal formation as albert was not on the los…qb still gets a grade +1

3:02 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 10 17-10 score 20 yard line shotgun 4 wide single back to qbs right trips top side stacked mike pouncey beaten by the dt directly to the qb…tannehill evades the clean dt and rolls down to the bottom side looks at a flats route it’s open but a minimal gain looks inside and fires on the run across his body to a scramble drill deep crossing mike Wallace just out of reach of a leaping mid level safety before it drops in over for a 35 yard gain…terrific play…qb making a play when it breaks down due to immediate pressure…kind of play that shows you what he’s capable of…it is really hard to be able to throw that ball in full gallop across the body with that kind of paste and accuracy +1

1:14 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 6 17-10 score gb 37 yard line shotgun 2 wr one on each boundary single back motions bottom to top side next to the qb…takes the snap gb playing a 10 men within 8 yards of the los with the 10[SUP]th[/SUP] being a walk up safety late…miami wants the double move stop and go vertical to Wallace but the db playing an 8 yards off coverage from pre snap never does anything but bail out on the gear down taking it away despite the pump fake and the qb correctly comes off of it to the bottom side gets heavy pressure and under hand flips the ball to the rb miller his dump off where if he makes one man miss in space on the turn and get vertical it breaks for big yardage…qb could have probably stayed in the pocket a little longer off that pump and go when he saw it wasn’t there could have worked more progressions possibly but he did a nice job to flip it to the rb miller in space for a potential big gain if the safety doesn’t fly up and get enough of miller for him to go to ground 2 yard loss qb grade +1

:26 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 8 17-10 score gb 39 yard line shotgun 4 wide 2 sets of stacked receivers tight to the formation single back to qbs right…takes the snap looks top side to the off the los stack wr landry working an underneath pivot route it’s open but he doesn’t like it looks to the on the los on the top side stack wr working a depth in cut crosser…shuffles nicely to his right feeling back side pressure off the edge where james has been beaten and hits that depth in cut to the wr Williams for a 14 yard gain…james spun the edge rusher on the play when he was beaten got away with a hold but the qbs grade to shuffle come off the primary pivot route to the secondary depth in cut and hit it spot on is +1

4[SUP]TH[/SUP] QUARTER

15:00 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 17-10 score under center 4 wide single back takes his 7 step drop finishes and steps forward a half step before while he is throwing he’s hit on the lower legs and spun…Samson satele beaten on the play qb barely finishes his drop and cannot step into the throw properly…it’s too damn bad cause we got clay working a top side slot out and up and the qb reads it right and clay has gotten over the top of the defense for what would be an easy td before the deep safety in the middle of the field could get there to help…ball clanks off the trail lbs helmet and incomplete…inability to finish the drop and step thru on the throw properly due to immediate pressure on the 7 step under center drop kills the play…qb grade +1

12:34 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 17-17 score mia 21 yard line shotgun single back to qbs right 4 wide Wallace bottom side boundary gets an 8 yards off pre snap coverage qb finishes his drop fires a stop route to Wallace for 9 yards on the throw missed tackle in space by the corner leads to a outside turn up field and rac for a 25 yard gain +1

10:39 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 2 17-17 score gb 46 yard line shotgun 4 wide trips stacked bottom side tight to the formation…miller goes in motion behind the qb to the bottom side swing pass qb throws the ball to miller in space placed out front leading him on the throw and he beats the only tackler who can make the play at the los as a result of the ball placement the lb doesnt have the angle for a catch and run up the sideline for a 20 yard gain…that plays tougher than it looks...it’s predicated on the qbs placement leading the rb up the field and not havingto break stride on the ball and tannehill executed it perfectly +1

10:03 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 17-17 score gb 26 yard line shotgun 4 wide after clay motions across the formation top to bottom side single back to qbs right…packers show a late walk up safety on the bottom side blitz Damien williams post snap picks it up nicely and runs the safety by the qb who finishes his drop and steps forward nicely and then hits jarvis landry on the shallow crosser just prior to top side dt contact where satele lost early hits landry out in front and he turns up field down the boundary for a catch and run to the 5 yard line…21 yard gain…on this play you have satele and pouncey both getting beat early the qb climbing forward to evade a wide rusher off the bottom side edge and in doing so having two interior dts steam rolling at him and he finds landry on the shallow cross just prior to contact for the big gain…beautiful play by ryan tannehill +1

9:19 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and goal 17-17 score gb 5 yard line RZ shotgun 2 wide both top side of the formation single back to qbs left fakes the inside hand off crouches down to sell the inside run gets clean immediate top side edge rush pressure Damien Williams late picks up that edge rusher while the qb climbs forward and just prior to interior contact from 2 converging defenders hits Wallace in the end zone who was held on the release from the slot off the los and spun even and a flag as a result but able to uncover on the qb climbing forward in the pocket and buying time and a td…great play by the qb...climbed the pocket found space and time and stood in knowing he was gonna take a big hit in the process for a TD +1

4:09 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 10 20-24 score mia 20 yard line shotgun 3 wide single back to qbs left with dion sims line up in front of the qb offset for pass pro looks to a short stop route from Wallace vs slightly off coverage ball is tipped at the los by clay Mathews incomplete…minimal gain if any there no issue with it +1

4:06 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 10 20-24 score mia 20 yard line shotgun 3 wide trips top side single back to qbs left clay in line off left tackle hits landry working a shallow crosser landry put his foot in the ground between lbs and cuts back up inside for a 11 yard gain +1

3:15 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 11 20-24 score mia 30 yard line shotgun 3 wide single back to qbs right takes the snap crouches for the play fake inside run packers blitz an ilb miller steps up to pick him up gets walked right back into the qb with a hand jammed up into his face mask knocking his helmet off even immediately…the lb grabs tannehill around the collar who was trying to escape at this point for a sack but it’s called back due to a defensive penalty for hands to the face…nothing the qb could have done differently there…had no chance good thing the officials saw the hands to the face +1

3:05 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and 9 20-24 score mia 36 yard line shotgun 3 wide single back miller to qbs left…takes the snap looks to the miller from the backfield releasing down the bottom side numbers from a tight to the formation receiver look bottom side presnap with a lb looking at the play the entire way responsible for the coverage…has immediate up the middle pressure from a blitz ilb no one lays a hand on he’s clean to the qb who wants to bail out to the top side but jawaun james blew the pick up of clay Mathews off the edge and he’s also clean and never touched to the qb... tannehill throws the ball past the los out of bounds to avoid the sack while Mathews hits him low on his legs and takes him down…this play wants that down the boundary release rb but he cant let it develop enough feeling that immediate inside middle pressure he has to bail out and he probably would have been able to elude that ilb but when Mathews is also never touched off the edge he has the angle on the qb and he cannot do anything but dump it out of bounds and avoid the sack lost yards…none of these routes can develop as a result of the pressure…qb grade for getting rid of it and not taking a loss given what he faced immediately post snap +1

***gets one more snap from the mia 26 yard line with 2 seconds left down 27-24 for the last ditch catch and lateral drill that comes up empty at mid field after it changes hands a few times with Miami players***

FINAL SCORE GREEN BAY 27 MIAMI 24

GAME SUMMARY32+ grades 2- grades…both minus grades came in the first 18 minutes of the game…none in the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] half…in the second half he lead 3 TD drives…his 2 minus grades one for a missed 2 way go TD on the 1 yard line where he placed the ball poorly on the slant route to hartline and also had clay in the flat prior at the front pylon and the second on a zone stare down in his drop of the target under cut by a flat zone defender reading his eyes on 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 12…on the final offensive drive with the lead he had one passing attempt on the final set of downs that was completely blown up by immediate pressure up the middle and off the edge by 2 clean rushers…what the tape says is the qb rating does not reflect the level of play by the qb

NEXT EDITION MIAMI AT CHICAGO

Our zone read also stuck out for me in this game. After Tannehill's 40 yard run on the second play (14:42) in the 3rd quarter GB defenders (Clay Matthews especially) was locked onto Tannehill for pretty much the remainder of the game for the read option. This led to us us running three straight inside zone plays on GB's 25 in the beginning of the 4th.

14:54 2nd and 10, GB 25 - Inside zone read hand-off to Miller for a gain of 11.

14:23 1st and 10, GB 14 - Inside zone read hand-off to Miller for a gain of 9.

13:51, 2nd and 1, GB 5 - Inside zone read hand-off to Miller for a 5 yard gain and TD.

Not really related to the thread itself, but Kevin White would be an amazing pick to help Tannehill come into his own in this offense.

Nit picking here, but you credit him avoiding a sack on the last play...if he takes a sack, and the clock runs or GB burns a timeout we win the game...I don't think many QBs would take the sack there, it may not even be the best move depending on field position. Just pointing that out

A sack on that last play puts you at 3rd and 15 plus with still time for another play on the other side of the 2 minute warning stoppage and 2 plays if the pack burn a timeout...the clocks at 3:05 when that 2nd down play for miami starts...instead it was 3rd and 9 3 minutes left and we call an outside run with the packers playing it the entire way and punt on the next play plus side of the 2 minute warning and we know the rest

1st half was ugly. 2nd half he stood toe to toe with the best QB in the league.

As the season progressed and you continue to do these Hoops it will become plain as day that he starts playing like this second half a whole lot more consistently. Trending up boys…team on is back going forward

I would disagree with first half was ugly but he did make one major mistake...but it didnt end up impacting the scoreboard much...the interior oline play in pass pro thru 5 games of tape study is actually worse than i expected...and frankly so is jawaun james work

Its ugly because I expect better from him. Certainly not all on him…but he missed a few throws he needs to hit. Maybe its wishful thinking especially with some of his surrounding cast…but I see how he played in the 2nd half and I think its an injustice to him if we don't hold him to that type of standard. We both know its there..and it was there pretty damn consistently the rest of the year.

Great write up. The interception thrown at Hartline, is that the one Hartline gave no effort to stop/knockdown vs. Shields (I think)? Even if it was, I would still have a tough time giving Tannehill a + on that one. I know it was the correct decision but the play still ended up with an int. One could always say a better thrown ball would have resulted in a better play. Tough call either way. Having said that, god damn this teams needs a tall/physical WR who can go up and get the ball. Besides Landry everyone else is just soft.

I can't remember what the protection was like on that play either. Did that affect the throw at all?

That int and the drop by Wallace on the potential TD were huge in that game.

I think the consistency is hear to stay. Once he got acclimated to the new offense it wasn't a problem the rest of the year. Get him a decent o-line this offseason and I think he will really make the big jump.

Protection was not an issue on that pick...he got the right look he took a shot correctly but we didnt have the right skill set wr running the route...i gave him a plus because any qb would take that shot off that look and a lot of wrs play it better in the air

Deficiencies around the qb on that play dont effect the actual qbs grade on that play...coverage says ball should go there...nothing wrong with that throw or placement either...hartline losing physically with the ball in the air is not on the qb

On the last play at the 3:05 mark where two blitzers come free at Tannehill...as I remember it...Didn't James pick up the DT and let the outside pass rusher come free because Pouncey was supposed to pick up the inside blitzing linebacker. Should there not have been a shift there? That way Tannehill would have only needed to contend with one blitzer?

That play really ticked me off cause the O-line really let us down when we had the game in hand. Give Tannehill time there and I bet we get the 1st down and win the game.

I will have to look but the inside blitzing lb didnt give it away pre snap...he came after the snap but was not up in a gap in other words...will check it out

If they were slanting down the oline and releasing mathews to the qb clean that down and distance sure doesnt help with a quick hitter them being able to get to the chains after the catch...that ball has to come out quick if mathews is released clean by design

Although that was 2nd down
