If the Chargers fire Marty Schottenheimer, bring him in as the next head coach and then he can bring his son Brian Schottenheimer to be the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator. He would need the title of assistant head coach to be able to leave the Jets if its not for a head coaching job. Then in 2 to 3 years when Marty is ready to retire, Brian can step in and be the head coach. He will be a little more seasoned by then. I think this could work. Capers can handle the defense and let Randy Mueller have control over personnel and the draft.

Impossible. He can't make a lateral move to Miami unless he's hired as head coach. That's it, that's the only way we end up with B. Schottenhiemer. Case closed....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

No, I believe he can if he is named assistant head coach. I believe that would be considered a promotion too.

Nope, that wont work. Not within the rules. You can't go and hire someone from another team unless they are given a promotion. The term "assistant head coach" is really a made up position, and it's not a promotional level of coaching. They made it impossible to use "assistant head coach" as a means of promotion on purpose, and it's done so teams can't steal other coaches from one another without actually promoting them....

Either we hire Brian as the head coach, or we don't get him, it's that simple....

You're right on. Everybody and their uncle would do the same thing. Like you said, case closed.

Marty might actually take "Assistant Head Coach" under his son. But I think that's the only way he'd take it.

I think the idea is kind of out there but I believe it IS possible. What's the reason Capers couldn't have the DC title?

Hmmmm, I like it!

Nothing is impossible..there is always a way around things, so never ssay never...t

Exactly, there are always loopholes out there. Plus, even though the Jets are in our own division, I don't think they would deny an opportunity for Brian to work with his dad for a few years and then become the head coach with the Dolphins. Mangini isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so Brian probably won't have a chance to be the head coach with the Jets.

I think he can as long as the Jets allow it. I was under the impression that if the position is for a head coach and the candidate is not a head coach (i.e, a promotion would be involved), then the team cannot disallow the interview. However, for any other position, then it's up to the team whether they would allow for the interview or not (as opposed to the team not even having the option to deny or allow the interview). If this is correct, then the Jets would have the option to disallow the interview as it would be a lateral move. Considering the job that he did and the fact that it's in the same division, I don't think there's any way the Jets would allow it.

Regardless though, I wouldn't like the move. I don't want anything to do with Marty. I wouldn't mind Brian, but no Marty.

I don't want Marty as a head coach. For one, he never had any luck playing against us. Plus, his playoff record stinks. He doesn't know how to win when it really matters.

i realize the jets had a much better year than expected, but how exactly does that translate into brian schottenheimer being qualified as a head coach, after one year as an offensive coordinator? has he been a head coach at any level?

How about we hire Marty as a regular season HC, then hire a postseason HC?
