How do you think players feel about Philbin vs. Sparano?

I get the feeling Philbin will empower the players to be the best they can be i.e. educate them, show them what they should and shouldn't do, but giving them much more leeway as a result. Sparano was more of a ra ra motivator yell at you to get things done type of guy. I suspect it will come down to the individual in the end, Philbin will probably expect them to be self motivated or maybe he has other coaches on the staff that will do that, seem to remember the OL coach is a bit of a hard ass. Think Philbin is the type of coach that will help players achieve their potential, Sparano clearly wasn't. I guess through all this rambling I would like to think Philbin would be viewed more favourably by the players, certainly those with a brain in their head.

i think the difference is the intelligence level. I doubt we will ever see philbin put paul soliai at fullback on offense, that was the most embarrassing moment in sparanos HC career. With all the good fullbacks out there we didnt keep not 1 and again embarassed this franchise. Thanks for nothing tony. also, i think ireland listens to philbin alot more than he did with sparano, partly because stephen ross probably told him too and also because he also believes in philbin. I dont think neither ross or ireland believed in the guy but the way they looked at it was, whats the worst that can happen ? ryan tannenhill landing in miami with the #8 pick? not a bad deal at all...

you cant honestly say sparano was a good motivator, what has he done to be considered a good motivator? has he won a playoff game? no, he hasnt and actually got embarassed in his only playoff loss. Sparano accomplished are the same as philbin in the nfl, nothing, nada. He won a few games yea but playoff games are what counts. Look at jim harbaugh, dude's 1st year in the nfl almost goes to the damn superbowl. Now thats what i call a good motivator.

whenever there is a new coach fans, players, etc... will always focus on the positive changes. All that really matters are the wins and losses, he doesn't have a big legacy to follow w/ Tony so if he's a good coach the wins will come and this will never be a debate.

Regarding Sparano, living in the NY area listening to ESPN NY radio (which is basically NY Jets/Tebow/Cromartie 24/7 coverage) all these hosts like Dave Rothenberg keep talking up Sparano as the main difference maker for this team this year that he is holding players accountable and yelling at them when they do something wrong like he used to do in Miami, which was refreshing at first but as you've seen other posters say, got tiring after a while, that Sparano is going to help them get back to ground and pound aka what Sparano is all about because Sparano is stuck in the Parcells state of mind, also mentioned his buzzer beater clock for the QB which in Miami messed up John Beck ( i know thats not saying much) but the point is, it just seems like Sparano is literally just taking his whole act of Parcells minon from MIA to NY and just plopping it down, ESPN NY even had their boy "shefty" come on and say the biggest addition for this Jets team is Sparano (which if true, is scary) Now while i do feel Sparano is a better fit for what the Jets want to do which seems to be run the ball be conservative play it safe and win with defense, i just dont see the logic in trying to install that mindset in a league where the mindset (as well as the NFL rules and refs) dictate passing the ball more than ever, especially since while the Jets O-Line isnt terrible, it certainly is not what it was back in 09/10 nor the stable of RB's , just trying to get your general opinion regarding the ESPN NY obsession with the Jets as well as the addition of Sparano being played out like the addition of Bill Walsh and the mindset of ground and pound in a league today which is tailor made to pass the ball...

I think the difference is confidence.

Sparano fist pumping after each fieldgoal sends a message of complacency to the whole team. It tells them we're not good enough.

Coach Philbin on the other hand has a calm, quite, and thoughtful demeanor. It sends a message of accountability. Players will thrive, and ultimately will take on that same mentality.

He is a big topic of conversation around here, Brian Schottenheimer was not popular(though I liked him) and the next OC was going to be popular at first no matter who it was. Especially w/ the Santonio stuff, Tony comes in as a no nonsense guy. So far so good but we'll see what he does when he's calling games. About his conservative style, HCs are usually more conservative than when they are OCs. I remember Bruce Coslet's dynamnic offenses in Cincy, he comes here as HC and we have this vanilla offense. I don't expect Tony to be as conservative as you guys think.

We made 2 title games w/ good running teams, SF and Bal made it last year a similar way. Defenses are being built to stop the pass so maybe it's not a bad idea to buck the trend and run the ball a bit? I think the plan is to run it more like '10 but if we get behind arly like '11 we may have to pass. Where I think Tony will help is w/ turnovers, his #1 goal is for Sanchez to protect the football. If he cuts his TOs down in half(very doable) that would be huge. I expect the D will be much better, we need the O to be better(remember we were around top 10 most of the year in pts scored).

as far as the buzzer, I read the other day GB does this w/ their QBs. If it's good enough for them it's good enough for us.

W/ all this said I still don't know what Tony will be as an OC, I am anxious to see how he calls games and how the O responds. I like him now the way you guys like Philbin now but all of us will see if these guys can succeed in the coming years.

You don't judge somebody until they face adversity. As myself and many others have said, Tony's biggest weakness was that he was not a good X's and O's guy, and he liked tinkering with the OL way too much. When it became time for him to make adjustments, he really didn't have an answer.

Now I think it's fairly obvious for everybody, from fans to players to media, that Philbin is a better X's and O's guy. We just gotta see if it'll transfer to being a HC.

I don't think you are going to get a good read from the players. Most will never saying anything bad, even against former coaches, because you never know when you're going to get traded. The tend to answer things as professionals.

That is one reason why I think it is such a joke around here when people take some player/coaches comments and act like it is some big endorsement of a player/coach. You see such items even just before someone gets their ass cut!

Sparano also borrowed a lot of credibility from Parcells. When Parcells bailed, I think a lot of it started falling apart.
