Alot of people are saying this really helped our cap but then the herald says the following:

The Dolphins will swallow $1.8 million in salary cap as part of the trade, absorbing much of the $3 million the team was under the cap for this season.

So was this good or bad for us?

It's simple, we now are not on the hook for his inflated salary next season. Therefore freeing up more space to spend next year. Took a hit this year, which doesn't matter because we're not going to be signing some big name free agent during the season.

Clumpy may correct, but after 6/1 dead money cap hits are carried to the next year. So that would be 1.8 million dead money next year. He was going to count 4.1 million against the cap next year (3.5 million salary, .6 dead money) so the cap savings will be 2.3 million (3.5 salary-1.2 million 2007 & 2008 dead money).

So we save 2.3 million?

Guess I should include Lemons 2006 contract ($385,000) next year if he makes the team. Then we're looking at a 1.915 millon cap savings in the Lemons-Feeley trade. If Lemons not with us in 2006 still 2.3 million but need 2 QB's instead of 1 (Frerrotte under contract, Rosenfels a free agent)

It didn't matter when we traded or cut him, unless we kept him until after June 1 next year. We took the same hit ($1.8m) by trading him that we would have taken if we dumped him prior to next June 1....The only advantage is that we are eating the cap space this year instead of next....

I think when its a trade all cap hits become immediate and in full.

Ozzy is correct. The rest of Feeley's signing bonus is accelerated onto our 2005 salary cap, so there goes $1.8 million of the $3 million we had left. However, I think the trade moves the remaining 11/17ths of his guaranteed salary for this season onto the Chargers, which offsets about $350,000 of our cap hit. Not to mention that we've cleared $3.5 million off our cap for next season.

Sorry for the mistake msg, learn something new about the cap all the time. Think it's much better for the extra $1.8 million to hit this year. Only leaves 1.2 million for injuries and/or practice squad, but Meuller should be able to work something out.
