I've read almost ever thread you Dolfans have written since Sunday night and the one thing I've noticed is many of you have over-rated the teams ability.. You're buying into the 11-5 record, rather than actually looking how well the team plays together..
The one thing I have noticed over the past few weeks and more importantly, Sundays game against the Jets.. The team has stepped it up a notch and there was some electricity in their play.. But is it good enough to win this weekend game??
Since I was bored last night and couldnt find anything worth watching on the TV.. I decided to replay the Jets game and to be totally honest.. I was troubled with the execution and (defensive) game planning of Sundays game and I would love to sit in on this weeks meetings to see whats going to be done to correct our mistakes...
This is my take on Sunday's game...
1) WE GOT LUCKY... The only reason we won is because the Jets gave the game away..
2) Brett sucked... All 3 interceptions was a result of Brett having a brain fart and not because of something out defense did to cause the interceptions.. They were bad-ill advised passes and a QB thats on his game would have never thrown those passes.. In my opinion Farve pulled a Ray Lucas and gave the game away..
3) Defensive play calling... It appeared to me that the Phins played mostly is some sort of zone defense.. The LB's responsibilities was to cover the receivers/TE/RB until they were physically passed on the field and then handed off that player to the safeties.. However the safeties were too deep and there was a huge area of open field and it made for too many easy receptions for 1st downs..
By playing in this bend, but dont break defense, I can see why we shut out the opponents 3 weeks in a row.. but a good talented offense will and have score with relative ease..
4) Renaldo Hill.. His play and his softness it a prime example of the defense.. I tried really hard to get into his psyche to figure out what he was thinking and what he was trying to do on the field.. In my opinion.. he took too many plays off and/or was afraid to get involved in a tackle..
To me.. it looked like he knew his role was to be the last man between the Jets player and the end zone and come helll or high water, he was going to be in position.. Which meant he left the tackling to the other 10 men on the field..
Also I noted, he is very quick to point out when someone else blew a coverage or was out of position..
6) Will Allen... Man he played one heck of a game.. He was all over the field and it looked like he was playing both CB and Safety... If only Hill would take notes, he might be a better player..
7) Channing Crowder... He had a decent game.. I wouldnt write home to Mom about it, but it wasnt bad... The only thing I have to say is he released the Jets player too soon and probably should have followed them into the secondary..
8) Joey Porter... In the 4th Qtr, on the last INT Farve threw.. He was the man in position that cause Farve to throw the ball high... except it was too high and fell into Goodmans hands..
Outside of this one play, the only other play I saw him involved with was the solo tackle on the one Jets wildcat play that resulted in a loss..
Other than those two plays... Porter was left quiet being blocked out be linemen and TE's... My suggestion to Mr Porter is if you want to be considered one of the toughest.. elite defensive players.. You need to step it up and stop living off your 17.5 sacks from games past...
8) Defensive pass rush.. Overall, the defensive line played one of the best games all year.. They kept the run game in check and did provide some pressure on Farve.. Because of the pressure, he was forced to release the ball early and many passes fell incomplete.. But at the same time, even when Farve was not under pressure, he was also guilty of leading the receivers too much and there was several passes that should have been caught... As a result of the inaccurate passing and the pressure caused by the D-line.. it made our secondary better than they really were...
9) Offensive line... They did a pretty good job of pass protecting Chad and for the most part... they manhandled the Jets D-line and overall I was quite impressed with them.. They really have gelled together since the 1st pre-season game against Tampa..
The only real complaint I have is number 57... 3 false starts.. nuff said..
10) Fasano... Damn fine adjustment on that TD catch... (Randy McMicheals who??)
11) Ricky... The guy ran hard and played tough... With the exception of the Wildcat pass play... and I have to quote our friend Homer Simpson.. "Doh"
12) Ronnie... He played the best he could and the best the Jets D would allow.. I applaud him for his tough play.. Now lets talk about his passing... It was the wind.. yeah thats it.. The wind caused the ball to go wide left..
12) Ginn... Yes it was a push off for a TD completion and did you know he fell down all by himself on that long pass from Pennigton in the 4th qtr...? Ginn beat the two defenders down the field and corrected very nicely splitting the defenders to come back for the ball.. However no one touched him when he fell to the ground.. It wasnt until after he was sprawled on the ground that he was tackled.. I couldn't tell if he slipped or was surprised he wasnt touched, but he fell to the ground as he tried to turn up field.. It reminded me of the criticisim he received earlier in the year where he was playing skerred and was afraid to get hit..
13) Bess.... Clutch.. Awesome.. I'll take 3 more of him...
Overall..
The Dolphins won that game because the Jets lost that game.. The game was up for grabs at any point and it was the Dolphins that wanted it more.. It was a great way to finish the regular season and if the Phins go One n Done in the playoffs.. I'm still very very proud of them and the turn around this season..
This week against the Ravens...
The one aspect of the game that scares me is when our defense is up against an accurate throwing QB with time to scope the receivers.. Our defense does not play tight man on man coverage and yes.. there are receivers open down field and any good QB can and will execute with ease..
Our defense against the run..
We've have given up some long drives that are a result of a balanced pass/run attack.. Should every man on our D come into the game with the mindset of putting the hurt on the Baltimore players.. Our D could end up shutting them down... Combine a tight secondary and hard hitting run stoppers.. Our D could very well win the game for us..
The only question is..... Will they ??
Our Offense against the Raven's D...
Scary... skeerred... frightening...
Honestly.. If each man on the offense takes personal responsibility to play their best game... We could over come Ray Lewis and his defense.. The one thing about this Ravens defense we can not over look.. from the opening kick off to the end of the game.. THEY WILL BE OUT TO PUT THE HURT ON..
Flacco might have the play-off jitters, but their defense wont.. There mission is to hit every Dolphin in sight and to hit them as hard as they can.. This is something the Jets defense didn't do and I have to question if our offense will be strong enough to match the intensity of the Ravens D..
However... With the right play calling and execution of the "trick" plays.. I believe the Dolphins can win the fight.. but its going to take smart play and personal dedication by all 11 players on the field.. The Ravens wont be giving the game away like the Jets.. and the only question that remains is the Dolphins going to step up to take the game away from them...??
