I'll admit that just like many Dolphins fans when Oakland picked JaMarcus Russel I had doubt about us getting Quinn. When Cleveland picked Joe Thomas I became quite optimistic about our chances. They said Tampa Bay might take him and Minny may. So as soon as the Falcons went on the clock I knew he was ours. As soon as Miami went on the clock I sent out text messages to my friends saying "Brady Quinn is a Fin." 15 minutes later I was wrong. Dead wrong. And ashamed. But as the day went on I realized that Miami never had any intention of drafting Quinn at all. Which is fine. But I still question the moves we made today.
In the first round where we could have had Brady Quinn we opted to go with Ted Ginn Jr. A lot of outrage came over this pick. A lot for passing on Quinn. A little for picking Ted Ginn Jr. And I personally am not completely sold on Ginn Jr. I'm certain that Mueller burned up the phones trying to find us a trade down partner. I'm sure there's no way he wanted to get Ginn in that spot knowing full well he could probably get him around the 16 or 17 area. However, I agree with taking offense in the 1st round because of our previous failues on that side of the ball. And Ginn could possibly be the most game changing offensive weapon in the draft at that point. Aside from Marshawn Lynch at 12 there wasn't another offensive player picked between us with Ginn Jr and the Browns at 22 with Quinn. So while I'm upset with the position we can't really doubt the player. I didn't like what Cameron had to say after the pick calling him a great "punt returner." And how we "drafted the Ginn family." Last I checked when you draft a player you don't get the rights to their family and you don't take a "punt returner" with the 9th pick of the draft. I hope that this pick works out but at the moment there are just too many questions around it.
John Beck in the 2nd round is an interesting prospect. The knock on his is he will be 26 years old opening day. And knowing the Cam Cameron system of letting a rookie sit on the bench a year or two he could be 28 by the time he's starting for us. And that is a big deal. But I still think that Beck has lots more upside to him than Stanton, Kolb or Edwards. I trust Terry Shea, Cam Cameron and Randy Mueller. 3 guys who know what they're talking about when it comes to QBs. Cam of course coached Rivers and Brees. Shea coached Trent Green. And of course Randy Mueller drafted players like Marc Bulger and Jake Delhomme in New Orleans. I heard a lot of people say this week that while some teams like Brady Quinn as their 2nd best QB they don't like him for 20 million more than a guy like Beck. So I guess Miami agreed with that assessment. And it's a decision we as fans have to live with. John Beck is now our QB of the future and even if we wanted Quinn or someone else we need to support Beck.
Samson Satele in the late 2nd I think was a reach. I would have loved to see us trade up into the 56 or 57 range to make sure we snagged Ryan Kalil but that wasn't to be. I kept watching Kalil fall down the draft board and thought that there would be a miracle and he would be there for us at 60. How, Mueller, can you sit there all this time talking about how extra picks increase our chances to move up and down in the draft to where we want to be to get our guys but then you let our guy, and he was obviously our guy in that spot, go to another team? However, I have gone from indifferent toward the Panthers even though I like their uniforms to hating the Panthers after they sniped Kalil from us and having to listen to Keyshawn Johnson all day long. As far as our pick goes I like Satele. He fills a position of need for us and while not as versatile as Kalil he does have the ability to fill several holes on the offensive line. Overall I like the pick and I'm glad we're finally addressing the offensive line, but we still need more help there. At least one more tackle on day 2. Doug Free is still available.
Speaking of tackles the 71 pick should have been Ryan Harris but we can thank Denver for not making that possible. Does anyone like the Lorenzo Booker pick? First of all, I think we would have been better served to get Ben Patrick at that position with Ryan Harris gone. But to pick running back in this position, I didn't see it coming. And why not Michael Bush who has a lot more upside than Booker? Booker is a 3rd down skat back with good speed. But where does he fit into the backfield puzzle that contains Ronnie Brown and possibly Ricky Williams. Logic would tell us that there's not room for 3 guys in the backfield. Could we really be looking to shop Ricky? I don't think that this is an indictment of Ronnie Brown in any way as the questions on him would be the same as with Booker, can he carry the full load? And I think for the 2 of them the answer is no.
So while I would have loved to see a draft where we got Brady Quinn, Dwayne Jarret, Ryan Kalil, and Ben Patrick that's not what we ended up with. Time will tell if Ted Ginn Jr, John Beck, Samson Satele and Lorenzo Booker pan out for us. You obvious can't make a decision on the draft today. And anyone who has decided to not be a Dolphins fan because of this draft then I say good riddance. I just hope that for our sake Cam and Randy know more than we think they know. And hopefully we have a happy and productive Day 2 of the draft. We certainly will need it.
That's just my opinion on draft day and how one Miami Dolphins fan made sense out of what seemed to be a pretty non-sensical day.
