Matt Roth had five tackles and a half-sack for Cleveland on Sunday. That gives him 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks in two games. This still applies to this Dolphins season - and not simply because his Dolphins release remains a head-scratcher. I've asked a few people and still don't have a good answer.

The decision remains pertinent because of the trickle-down effect of how Jason Taylor is being used. As I blogged yesterday, Taylor is strictly a first- and second-down player now. He's coming off the field on third downs, typically passing downs, even though rushing the passer has been Taylor's career strength.

The working idea last summer was Roth would be the run-stuffer and Taylor the pass-rushing side of the outside linebacker position. When Roth was injured (or whatever) the first part of the season, Taylor played every down.

You can understand why the Dolphins want to limit Taylor's number of plays at age 35. The decision came after the Carolina game in which he did nothing -- zeros across the board. Was he wearing down?

So the question becomes on which play you limit his plays. If Roth was there, that would be obvious - Taylor could be the pass-rushing specialist, as originally planned. Without him? Taylor evidently has to stop the run.

You can understand that Cameron Wake should be on the field more. In fact, Wake replaced Taylor and pressured Tom Brady into his game-ending interception on Sunday.

we werent gonna resign roth anyway in the off-season so we wanted to look at wake more.

i agree with this article, san diego and florida are probably the best state/city to host a superbowl for all the reasons he stated, i think goodell is being a jerk and wth is he doing annoucing new stadiums vs our old but great one.

i think ross should upgrade it tho i always hear that the seats arent low enough for the crowd noise to really take in effect etc.

I give JT respect he took less money to come home and has done everything he's been asked to do with no compliant. He's playing a new role and at his age holding up pretty good if you ask me. He's quietly having a respectable season.

I really hate that response to these types of scenarios... why bother playing any of the players you're not going to re-sign? We probably won't re-sign someone like Camarillo, so why bother playing him? The point is, Roth is solid at stopping the run and we cut him for a reason no one knows. Further, this is negatively impacting JT as it is forcing him to play to his weakness - stopping the run.

I don't care that weren't going to re-sign Roth in the offseason. Point is, he was our best run stopping LB. Now that Fergie is gone, i suspect JAX will expose our run defensive.

F Matt Roth and his "groin issue". There was something going on, and we may never know. Who cares, he is gone.

Roth only played 4 games for you guys this year and in those 4 games jason Taylor had a grand total of ZERO sacks. I don't know how well he was doing as far as applying pressure but this just sounds like an excuse.

Here's how Roth's departure impacted Taylor, and everything for that matter. It's basically 1 less no-talent jackass running around spewing his mouth off with sordid nonsense. A roster spot we can use for a "gamer" instead of a mouth. As soon as we lose Crowder and Porter, that will triple what I just said above. 3 open spots for gamers instead of mouths. I'll give Vontae a pass on his mouth because he's backing it up.

Agreed, he has even been the defensive difference in the 2nd Jets game, and still is able to get pressure from the side he is least effective from.

He picked up a fumble and ran it in, he didn't force the fumble. He wasn't a difference maker, he was invisible outside of that play.

Wrong. After running it into the endzone, he threw a perfect fastball off the Jets stupid logo which was totally awesome.

It pretty much is an excuse. The fact is, people in Miami are expecting too much from Jason Taylor. This isn't 3-4 years ago. Jason Taylor, just like any good player in the past, will have his moments to remind you what he used to be, but he's not what he was anymore.

The same goes for Ricky Williams. Yeah the guy is making plays but you guys honestly think he's in 2002 form? Because I seriously don't. He shows explosiveness but he doesn't show the power he used to have or the athleticism. I'm willing to bet Ricky won't survive a full season carring the ball over 350 times like he used to for us.

We all need to stop living in the past and just appreciate what they can give us in a limited role.

Sine we are all guessing, I will to...

Roth was in the final year of his contract. His agent told him for him to get paid he must become a 3 down player, which means becoming a better pass rusher. When Miami brought in JT, this all but sealed the fact that he wouldnt even get a chance past 2nd down. I am sure he was upset, but still had a great off season and was praised by Sparano.

Then he strained his groin right before TC. The same injury he played through all last year and just had surgery on. He had 2 options....

1. Play the season at less then 100% in a year that he has to play great to get paid.

or

2. Sit out untill it heals and hope he can work his way back into the lineup.

The problems started when he lied about the injury. Was made worse by JT actually holding up better then expected against the run. Then the long Carolina run that he gave up sealed his fate. It was one thing to sit out 6/7 games and then come in play perfect ball, but he didn't.

this is just sarcasm right? Being we gave him a 3 year extension last year.
