Matt Roth had five tackles and a half-sack for Cleveland on Sunday. That gives him 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks in two games. This still applies to this Dolphins season - and not simply because his Dolphins release remains a head-scratcher. I've asked a few people and still don't have a good answer.
The decision remains pertinent because of the trickle-down effect of how Jason Taylor is being used. As I blogged yesterday, Taylor is strictly a first- and second-down player now. He's coming off the field on third downs, typically passing downs, even though rushing the passer has been Taylor's career strength.
The working idea last summer was Roth would be the run-stuffer and Taylor the pass-rushing side of the outside linebacker position. When Roth was injured (or whatever) the first part of the season, Taylor played every down.
You can understand why the Dolphins want to limit Taylor's number of plays at age 35. The decision came after the Carolina game in which he did nothing -- zeros across the board. Was he wearing down?
So the question becomes on which play you limit his plays. If Roth was there, that would be obvious - Taylor could be the pass-rushing specialist, as originally planned. Without him? Taylor evidently has to stop the run.
You can understand that Cameron Wake should be on the field more. In fact, Wake replaced Taylor and pressured Tom Brady into his game-ending interception on Sunday.
