Would trading for Orton and signing for Braylon Edwards make this team any better? Seriously- does this team win more with them? I have said on many occasions, I am not a huge Orton fan and neither that much fasicnated with Edwards but let's think this over for a second. Could bringing in Orton, to start and having Edwards paired with Marshall, make this a serious playoff team--or not really?

Easily 2 to 3 wins better imo.

With both those guys healthy and playing the Dolphins end up 9-7 or 10-6 last year. And win some of those close games handily.

Playoff team easily

I don't see Orton as a huge upgrade over Henne so I don't think he's worth it if he costs you a draft pick or a good chunk of salary. Edwards could really put this offense in a great position regardless of the QB situation. On one hand, you surround Henne with weapons so he has no excuse, barring injuries, to not perform this season. If he doesn't, you draft a QB in round 1 and put him into a comfortable situation where he has great receivers.

why is everyone mentioning edwards are we interested?

Well because Edwards at the #2 is a true vertical (and proven) deep threat and will open up the other receivers more. Notice how often Marshall was double and triple covered at times last year. Even Bess was double covered half of the time he was out there as well. No defense respects Hartline and this is a problem. Those shell coverages within 25 yards of the LOS killed us last year.

I don't like pasting other posts. But I was just at the rival board and Todd over there made some very good points.. the first parts i totally agree with wholeheartedly, but the latter points about the teams we have to face does coincide with the premise of this thread:

we currently have no proven depth at WR, and if Marshall or Hartline go down we could be in trouble again. It's uncertain how long Gates will take to make an impact, and until he does, I think it would be wise to have someone else in the mix who certainly can.

IMO Hartline is a possession guy. He might have a slightly higher yards per catch, but he's still a possession guy. He might sneak by a DB here and there, but he's not the first guy you're picking to enter a jump ball contest..... or a tracking the ball contest...... or a down field catching contest. He's not a scorer, and he's not a playmaker.... and that's what we're missing. I'd rather go after Edwards than bank on Gates contributing early on.

The Jets made the Champ game with him so I wouldn't say he's detrimental to success.

Not to mention, if we're looking at the big picture and planning ahead:

we face the Eagles, so we'll need all the help at WR we can get for that game.

We face Revis twice. That alone should warrant us grabbing an extra WR. (That's 3 games against HOF caliber corners)

Houston picked up Joseph who's a stud when healthy. With the firepower of that offense, we might need more of our own.

Cleveland has Haden.

NE has a ProBowler in McCourtney and could be nasty with Vince & Albert up front, so it'd be nice to have 2 big guys to throw jump balls to if they bring the pressure. Plus they drafted Dowling.

SD had one of the best pass defenses in the NFL (ranked #1 in yards allowed with a 76 QBR and led the league in fewest big play catches allowed. We might also need to match their firepower.

KC should be even better than 2010 where they allowed a stingy 78 QBR & 55% completions.

Giants allowed an 80 QBR with only 57% completions.

That's 10 games against some good cover guys or great secondaries that would really benefit IMO from another weapon at WR. Not to mention, if these teams decide to double Brandon and stick their stud corner on Hartline, that could spell trouble.

Plus the playoffs and Super Bowl could include teams from the 6 toughest pass defenses from 2010: Baltimore, Pitt, Jets, GB, Chicago, and SD.

I actually think Hartline is pretty good, remember all the times Chad Henne missed him wide open last year?

Good points all.

I just ask this. Orton struggled last year against the likes of KC, OAK and SD. Some decent teams. How does he translate against the likes of a HOF QB (Brady) and a elite DEF (NYJ)?

People in DEN seen this guy perform for 2 years. And yet they aren't raising hell to keep him. Hell the FO in DEN aren't even behind him. But somehow he will cut it in the AFC EAST and be the man in MIA.

The guy hasn't been the man for 2 teams. What makes you think he will be the man in MIA?

My thoughts exactly.

Also a great post by Greyboy in this thread. The Edwards thing is not only a legal issue but also a money one. But if the first was ironed out and, say, we gave Paul Soliai a nice contract extension, we could make it work. As I've said before, I'm all for it.

I disagree for the sole reason that Braylon Edwards does not add new dimension to the offense -- more of a Marshall mirror with a different vertical skill set.

Tremendous talent. However, I think if you're going to add a player of that caliber for that type of salary, you might as well as a player that compliments your No. 1 receiver -- a la Steve Smith. That does not mean I am condoning the Dolphins' front office signing Steve Smith, it merely means I am in favor of them adding a player that can play the "X" position with those type of attributes.

I see what you're saying. You don't want to make the same mistake the Ravens did last year in bring in a bunch of possession guys to go with Joe Flacco.

But Edwards is someone who has to be accounted for. He's not a pure vertical presence but he does have a history of success getting deep. But mostly, he stops the defense from being able to cheat over and cover Marshall and Bess. He's a threat, which in my view Hartline is not. Long term I agree that a Steve Smith is a better type of compliment, and I don't think it's a coincidence you mention him because in many ways Gates has a Steve Smith-type of skill set. As I've mentioned in other posts one of the downsides to bringing Edwards in would be to push Gates far enough down the depth chart he wouldn't get enough reps to really develop this year. And if I'm a coach, I'm putting a pretty big priority on his development.

I think it's more like 4 wins better. I think Orton-Edwards combined with what they've already done this off-season (Pouncey, Bush, Burnett) would actually be a pretty nice off-season. Especially if they bring in Zach Miller. I think what right now is probably like a 6-7 win team would be more like an 9-10 win team with Orton and Edwards helming. New OC, some weapons vs. New OC, without as many weapons. It just makes sense to get some of these moves made. And Matt Moore as a backup to Orton with Henne around too, that's a pretty nice stable of QB's. As opposed to right now where we lack the solid starter.
