First off, let me say that Ronnie's a very important part of our offense, a good player, etc. etc. I like Ronnie, and I like Ricky, and I LOVE our two-headed rushing attack.

What concerns me is the impact that Ronnie's injury will have on Ricky. And I don't like where this is going one bit.

If you're like me and take an interest in what goes on behind the scenes apart from the X's and O's, you've got to be concerned. Ronnie has been out for a few days and already the storm clouds are approaching.

Ricky is back in the spotlight. And that is about the worst possible thing that could happen. I don't think anyone doubts he CAN handle the rushing workload - it's pretty obvious he is in top form. The question is whether he wants to, or more precisely, whether he is *comfortable* doing so.

The media has begun its feeding frenzy on Ricky. Led by your local beat writers such as Armando, they've begun forcing Ricky to speak the media, something we all know he not only dislikes, but it causes him anxiety. The debilitating, need to self-medicate kind of anxiety. You can read more about the media/Ricky situation here, but I'm sure you're all aware anyways:

Ricky has relished and become accustomed to avoiding the spotlight. His brother and friend Ronnie handles all of that, and lets Ricky focus on simply playing. Now, Ricky is one hundred percent in the spotlight, both on and off the field, and there's not much anyone can do about it. If not managed with the utmost delicacy, I can almost guarantee this situation will lead to Ricky's early retirement at the end of this season.

I believe Parcells and this regime understand Ricky better than anyone could hope to, and they will do their best to utilize his talents and help him manage his off-field (media) issues. But their backs are against the wall. IF Ronnie is truly out for the season, Ricky will *have* to be used as our workhorse for the remainder of the season. And now that the media is swarming like a flock of vultures waiting for their prey to die, Ricky is also going to be getting plenty of unpleasant attention in the media. The fact that the media brought forward a complaint has already created a significant amount of tension in the fragile ecosystem that exists around Ricky.

I fear that Ronnie's injury, if season-ending, will also spell the end of football for Ricky Williams, a year earlier than we expected. The whole situation just might remind Ricky why he hated football in the first place. I hope I am wrong.

Well, if Ronnie is not re-signed in the off-season....I wouldn't be shocked if Ricky called it quits after this season. He has stated he DOES NOT want to take on a full load again. He wants to walk away from football healthy and the best chance for him to do so is play behind Ronnie.

Agree completely - Ricky's as good as gone if Ronnie is not re-signed.

But I think the current situation also has the potential to wreck things regardless of what happens with Ronnie in terms of re-signing. Ricky is not going to be happy for the remainder of the season...at all.

I beleive Ricky has dealt with his Anxiety Issues. He is not going to be taking on any more "media Pressure" then he did when he first rejoined the team again for the 2nd time. If you remember it was a media frenzy around these parts.

This year in preseason when being interviewed he seemed alot more calm during interviews, very non shalant (did i spell that right?)

My true worry though is will we have a big drop off in talent ability when we go from our #1 to our #2 guy. Having the ability to go from Ronnie to Ricky in a game and not have any dropoff in talent or ability was a huge plus for our offense. What will happen now when Lex comes in is the real question.

Heres hoping for the best guys. I am a huge Ricky Fan and hope he comes out like a king at the end of all this.

I think he is only going to be completely in the spotlight this week....so perhaps this couldn't have happened at a better time, being that it's a short week.

We have many other faces for this team, that Ricky can just be a guy off the field....was Ronnie really the face of the team in the media? the one always with a mic in his face? Nope.....Porter and JT filled that role more. Henne has a chance to step up as a leader and be more vocal too....

Hold on a second guys... Wasn't Ricky the primary tailback when Ronnie got injured his rookie year?? If I recall correctly, Ronnie got hurt 1/2 way through the Jets game and Ricky took over from that point on. In Ricky's next game against the Titans he ran for 173 yards!!! Granted that was 4 years ago but he's still the same physical specimen he is today if not stronger!! You fools are reading WAY too much into this... Ricky will be fine with the bulk of the carries with Lex spelling him relief here and there!! Watch him RIP it up on Thursday night!!! Oh Yeah!! :)

The running the ball part of Ricky's job description, not a problem.

The thing I am most worried about is how Ricky deals with the added pressure of being the "short term" main back in the media. This is where management will be earning their stripes, because it is the time when someone who has issues may look to their old methods of coping with their current job stresses..... and he does not have any more drug tolerance left with the NFL.

Exactly. I think he's past the drug thing though, to be honest. But he has been flourishing because he was enjoying himself and has been comfortable with his situation...his role...his purpose, and I think he'd have no problem leaving if he stopped enjoying. He's truer to himself than he ever was.

I think you're over thinking this. Ricky knows he is only starting because of Injury, and that next year things will be differant. We don't even know how long Ronnie is out. This is over-speculating IMO. I don't think Ricky will have a meltdown like he did after 2003.
