Tannehill

Everyone knows how committed the Miami Dolphins are to quarterback Ryan Tannehill. That’s not new. But framed against that knowledge, the most stunning things I’ve heard coming from the organization the past few days during the NFL annual meeting are about how deep that commitment to Tannehill is ... and isn’t.
The commitment comes partially out of necessity. The truth is that even as the Dolphins are doing due diligence on all the top quarterbacks that will be available in the draft, the team privately does not believe it will have a chance to make a choice on any of them.
At least not in the first round.
I’ve been told by multiple people within the organization they hope they get the chance to draft a quarterback in the first round, but believe Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield will all be gone when Miami picks at No. 11 overall.

Only thing that matters is what the coach thinks at this point. And Gase, for better or worse, is all in on Tannehill.

Good luck. Because the way this roster is set up, it's going to require Tannehill to be something he has not shown to be, in order to be a successful team.

Nicely written article, but it's nothing Fins fans didn't already know.
Will Gase actually ship him off if Ryan plays subpar? I highly doubt it. There will be some excuses about he needed a season to get back, and really, 2019 is the year he shines!
Ryan's average, I don't hate the guy, and hopefully he shines this season.
But I want Mayfield for 2 reasons, to be the guy in the future, and for if Ryan's body breaks down on him. Also, I like Baker's tenacity to win.

Every year is a make or break season for Tannehill, we Dolphin fans have been hearing that forever. I have given him a pass over the years because of the Oline play, but I can see Gase drafting a QB every year after he has filled the gaping holes this team still has. Gase might like Tannehill no doubt, but he isn't a stupid man, and he won't hesitate to make a change if someone younger and better comes along.

Gase knows his job is tied to the offensive success. Unless we draft a new QB, we are not letting go of Tannehill. We will hold on to Tannehill with our G.I. Joe Kung Fu Grip.

Will we draft a QB? I highly doubt it. But now is smokescreen season, and teams do trade up for QB's so we will definitely say we are looking at QB's as we fish for ridiculously good trades from teams needing a QB.

If the OL is fixed, I think Tannehill has a good shot at comeback player of the year... With the addition of Albert Wilson, Drake and Grant getting significantly more snaps, the Fins will finally have the ability to make the defenses pay for their mistakes. While screens might not "work" more often then they previously did, the upside on those plays is now through the roof when you've got Grant or Drake catching them. Defenses just can't afford to miss the 1st tackle...

Even quick slants in the middle of the field, Tannehill's bread and butter, will mostly be caught by 4.4 speed... I expect alot of chunk play this season...

player / 20+yds / reception or carries / Ratio

Kenny Stills 14 - 58 - 4.14
Amendola 7 - 61 - 8.71
Devante Parker 9 - 57 - 6.33
Albert Wilson 4 - 42 - 10.5
Jakeem Grant 3 - 13 - 4.33

Jarvis Landry 6 - 112 - 18.66

Awesome post as usual. It just makes so much sense.

Wait a second...

“Depending on whom one speaks to within the organization, the confidence level in Tannehill runs the gamut from believing he’s an elite, Super Bowl-type quarterback who can put the team on his shoulders to something just short of that.”

So the extremely narrow spread on Tannehill is he is either elite or just short of elite?!?! Heck I would gladly take one of those options! That is some “gamut” and sort of makes the whole point of the article mute to me.

Duh. Tannehill is now a veteran QB. He's not going to be allowed to have a "slump". If the line and receivers appear to be performing well and he isn't this year or he misses a lot of games due to injury, they'll replace him next year.

I don't think this is a huge surprise, with one caveat:

What is the organizational view of a successful season by Tannehill in 2018? Successfully leading an offense where everyone actually does their job like they're supposed to? TD/INT? 8 wins? 10? Playoff wins?

I think it's somewhere along the first bit, and if he gets back to where he was in November 2016 quickly, the rest will follow suit.

I think that could be true to a degree, but different people have their idea of what "make" means. I think there are things the the organizations wants to see, but within the relm of being realistic. You're talking about a qb coming off a serious knee injury who missed the entire 2017 season. People who think there might not be some rust or ups and downs early are being unrealistic. So if your version of make is Tannehill leading a team that was just ranked 32 out 32 yeams to an 11-5 record and a deep run into the playoffs you're likely going to be disappointed.

Nah later on in the article that tones down a bit and Mando believes Gase is in that group believe it or not. He's just speculating obviously based on his comments. I hope Ryan shuts everybody up and I believe he will but yes it's time for him to **** or get off the pot. Many QB's make plenty of plays in less than ideal conditions we can't expect things to be ideal for Ryan 100% of the time. I believe he will flourish next season and I hope one of the over hyped QB's from the draft is NOT available at 11. I saw a compelling mock where Mayfield could be there if either NY Giants or Denver don't drafty one so somebody may have to leap frog us to change this.

I think you have Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Rothlisberger, Rivers, Stafford, Wilson and Ryan. After that Tannehill needs to be as good or better than the other qb's in the pack by the second half of the season. And he should on the heels of Rivers, Stafford, Wilson and Ryan.
