With Marino already on the payroll, why doesn't Ross make him the one that the head coach and GM answer too? He hired him, but doesn't really do that much. Dan might not want 18 hour days, but even a regular 8 hours a day is plenty for that position. Someone that is a football guy, that they have to answer too. Someone that will be there everyday. We need Ross for the cash, that's it! Plus Dan worked with 2 of the great football minds in Shula, and J Johnson. I'm sure he picked up a few things along the way. PLEASE ROSS....USE DAN!

I love Dan Marino, but what does he bring to a front office? He was a great player, but he's never managed anything or anyone in his life. We have seen John Elway do it, but he was also owner of an Arena Football team and successfully manages his own car dealerships and restaurants. I dont see Marino being the kind of person that is qualified to be a football czar over the GM and HC.

Agree with sounds but I think Dan can fake it better than Ross.

No offense, but Marino wasn't very good when he worked in the media,

and all he had to do was TALK about football.

I have seen nothing to indicate he would do better with no coaching or scouting experience.

His current role seems like the right one. Some kind of high level vague adviser.

In all fairness Marino was te unquestioned team leader/captain, he was the players union rep, and assumed leadership role at every Probowl. There are plenty of parts in Marinos background that were leadership roles that have gone unnoticed. Marino has probably forgot more about football then the majority of the boobs in the Dolphins front office. Marino is the type of leader troops rally behind, and will run through a brick wall for. What remains to be seen with Marino is if he is able to fill the roles of the positions below him with the right people, setting the organization up for success. At the very least Marino brings a level of credibility, and respect in the organizational structure that has been missing for a very long time.

Players followed Marino because he was a great player and vocal on the field. On the business side of things, he is going to have to be a great businessman first before people follow him. Those are 2 very different areas of leadership. Being a team captain doesn't qualify you to run a franchise. Richie Incognito was a team captain.

1. Marino is better than Ross. Right now our GM and HC only answer to Ross. Marino can make a more informed decision about their fate than Ross can.
2. Marino knows what good coaching looks like, even if he can't do it himself. He can go to a team meeting or walk on the field and notice if Shula ever allowed something to happen.
3. Marino didn't want the heavy work load when he had the easy work for pay TV gig. Things are different now for him. He needs the money.
4. Why not? Everything else we have done in the last 20 years has backfired. Let's try something different. If it doesn't work, so what? Just one more year down the crapper.

Who said he was going to have anything to do with the business side? Elway doesn't have much to do with the business side of the Broncos. Did you notice how I used leader/captain? There is a huge difference between winning a player vote like Incognito did and actually being a leader. Marino is/was a leader plenty of people are placed in the position of leadership roles, but they are not true leaders. Since you are so hung up on the business side Marino is on the board of Corporate Resource Services and maintains an active role recruiting new clients as well as managing exsiting relationships for the company, he is a major partner in Anthony's Coal Fire Pizza a national chain with over 40 locations and growing, he with Bill Elliot built a NASCAR team that was acquired by a major Nasscar team, the Marino Foundation is a 42 million dollar charity for Autism research, and there is much much more so to sit there and claim he has no background in business is just wrong. He has a very diverse background in business, to match his NFL expertise.

John Elway is the GM and Executive VP of Football. If you don't think he oversees any part of the major business transactions made by the franchise, then you probably shouldn't be in this conversation. The premise of the OP was that Marino should be OVER the GM - the guy who makes salary cap decisions, negotiates contracts, runs the scouting department, hires medial and training staff, runs the draft, evaluates the roster, etc.

Sorry man, but Marino is a great player but he's just a token hiring.

Thank you, couldn't have said it any better. Ross is a business man making football decisions when he's around. We see how well that's going. Marino is a football guy who also knows business which this team needs. He doesn't have to evaluate talent, except for a Head Coach and GM, that's it! He would bring some credibility to the franchise.
