This may be the result of frustration, but I truly think it is an objective assessment as to why we are where we are. This is a problem that has been created by mismanagement on all levels, period. I understand the injuries and sudden retirements, however, that does not explain or excuse one monumental mistake made by the people running this team (and by that the finger is being pointed directly at Speilman and Wanny).

The Offensive Line – This is where offense stops and starts. With a good offensive line you can control the ball and score points (maybe not 25 a game but with our defense enough to give us a chance) with the current offensive weapons we have. Prior to this season and going back to January everyone knew this was a priority. We targeted free agents and tried to improve. We obviously did not. But not only did we not improve, the Dolphins have put an offensive line out there that appears unable of blocking a college team. I think that is attributable to two occurrences: 1) Very poor personnel decisions; and 2) Poor coaching philosophy.

As for the personnel decisions other than James every one of the players has been playing, to put it mildly, poorly. McIntosh deal was inane. How could we not know he was injured? While he may end up being good the fact that he could not participate in training camp and work with the o-line effectively ruined him for the first month of the season and disrupted any potential cohesiveness that could have and needed to be developed PRIOR to the season. St. Clair? There is a reason he was not starting. Whitley and McKinney? Well their play speaks volumes.

As for coaching, I think most football people know that an offensive line has to play together and develop continuity and cohesiveness. Having said that how can you wait to pick starters until the end of the preseason? They should have picked a line and kept them together and allowed them to play together and work out the kinks in the preseason and not during the first three weeks of the season. It just does not make sense. (It is the same issue at QB – not naming a starter until the last minute – gives the offense no time to consistently work with one person and develop the much needed communication and comfort level to be effective).

An addition note relates to Quarterback - Feeley is not very good and to have given up a second round pick for him was simply a mistake that you cannot make in today’s NFL when there is such a premium on drafts picks. Given our potential record, that pick will be at the top of the second round, which will cause it to sting a bit more. Notwithstanding that I would have had more respect if they made that move, cut Feidler and let Feeley work during training camp and the entire pre-season as the QB. They did not and that could not have helped anyone involved.

It seems to me this front office and coaching staff does not know if they should scratch their watches or wind their asses. Until Wayne resolves the problem up top the you know what will continue to flow down hill to us as fans….

Nail....head....hit.

Except the part about feeley, good coaching and good O-line would do wonders for him.

He looks 50 times worse now, than what he did in Philly.

It's like they destroyed him.

A.J Feeley #1 Mistake. How can you trade a 2nd round pick for a guy who wasn't all that impressive in those 4 starts.I wouldn't be complaining so much if he was acquire for a 5th round pick.
Of Course #1B Oline.

Whoa...a good post....I agree.....
You Know......Our first instincts were right......When we signed St. Clair...We said that he sucked....when Seth was made the starter we said: WHY? When we signed DMac...we all said: Desperation....We all knew Wade Smith sucked......
WE WERE RIGHT.....
This season went in the toilet when we failed to sign Damien Woody and John Tait.

no, no,no....Like you said, Nail....head....hit. Including Feeley. Maybe if we wouldn't have gotten raped for that 2nd round pick and we only gave em a 4th or something like that....(i wouldn't have) then it would've been ok.

As far as the OL goes, I don't think RS made poor personnel choices. He brought us a good guard, two veteran bodies at T, a 1st round T, a 6th round G, and a 7th round T. That is a ton of emphasis on that position, and it is absolutely an indictment of Dave and Tony that they haven't gotten this group together. Further, it is Dave's fault alone that the OL was in such poor shape to begin with. He is the one who let a good line go bad in his tenure coaching.

As to AJ, that selection doesn't look too good now. QBs are a gamble, though -- I'm not going to condemn anybody for swinging and missing with a 2nd rounder on a QB when so many other teams have blown much higher profile picks on bigger busts than Feeley.

I think the bigger issue there is that you can't keep trading away future picks and expect it not to bite you in the *** eventually. Rick shares in the blame here, but Dave still takes more of the blame. If he hadn't been doing this, perhaps Rick could have made a deal using 2004 picks for Feeley and even Boston. I hope that this point gets driven home when we miss out on a guy who could really contribute in the 2nd round next year...

Well we tried to sign John Tait - his wife did not want to be here. We can't make him sign.

We tried to sign Damian Woody for Center. He went to the Lions - he'd rather play there.

There were no other great offensive lineman that became available in the off-season. Spielman tried to pull the trigger on them - but it didn't happen.

Weren't you also happy when they signed David Boston? How about Reggie Howard? How about Ricky Williams (prior to this July) - wasn't that a great pick-up?

We landed a hot free agent last off-season - the guy we thought was going to be our next QB - Brian Griese. He was what eveyone thought to be the piece of the puzzle that would get us going in the right direction.

But to say we didn't try to address the O-line problems is ludacris.

Hindsight is 20 / 20.
